Atlanta Braves Thread (I HURT MYSELF TODAY TO SEE IF I STILL FEEL)

The problem is Butch blew his wad and now can't catch lightning in a bottle. We aren't on an upward trajectory. The butt muncher can't deliver. All hat, no cattle. 8-9 wins is an improvement but don't piss on my back and tell me it's raining. Don't sell me 8 wins as if it's something I should be proud of, history doesn't lie. We are a top 10 program.

Butch is doing this to himself. If he could somehow, some f'ing way muster enough decency to somehow relate to the average Tennessee fan he wouldn't be balls to the fire at all times. Dont f'ing tell me winning the East wasn't a goal, don't f'ing tell me we have life champions, and are re-stocking with 5 star hearts. Tell me you weren't good enough and fell short but will work like hell to get s hit done. Tell me you missed on some targets but like what you have coming in. No excuses.

Agree here minus top 10 program. Not anymore.

IMO, UT should strive to compete for the SEC title on an almost yearly basis, and at least occasionally win it. So, honest question for Brown, or Ben, since you said you agree with him... Do you guys honestly think that Butch Jones has the ability to EVER win the conference? If not, how does keeping him around get UT closer to achieving that goal? Sure switching coaches might leave us worse off, but at least then we'd be taking a swing, as opposed to settling for endless mediocrity.

I know this is an excuse, but i feel it's also the truth, if we didn't have so many brutal injuries this past season we would have won the East. The big games we needed to win (Florida, Georgia, VT) we somehow found a way to win. South Carolina was bad, i have no excuses, 2nd half at Vandy is inexcusable. We did have a school record setting offense this year, it was our defense that let us down this season. Last year everyone was happy with the Shoop hire but that's what bit us in the ass. I wanna see how we are next year, will the QB throw the ball more and have us in more games since we won't have Dobbs and his magic legs out there to fight back with. Will the defense be better if they're healthy?

And yesterday wasn't great but it was a good class.

I hope you're right. I'll be interested to see what your opinion is after the end of this upcoming season.

I'm not a Butch fanboy or have some grand disillusion of his success, but I do live in the real world with an attempt at objectivity.

Also agree completely here ^

FIRE DEBORD!!! Oh ya..record setting offense. Burn the bum at the stake. The knee jerk masses are amusing.

Buutch is average but the hand wringing is ridiculous.

He also runs as clean of a program as you can get and other than the LIFE CHAMPIONS quote from ever embarrassing he program. People just need to stop with reading into quotes and act like it's so embarrassing. High Freeze was saying the same thing as Butch yesterday and he hasn't won **** either.

I agree here too.

We will never be favored or expected to win the conference as long as the Alabama machine is rolling. If you want to beat your chest about winning a division, by all means, go for it. Do I think Butch is capable of winning the East? Absolutely.

It's not really beating my chest, but winning the East gets you into a single game where anything could happen, even against Bama.

It just seems that this year was the perfect storm if winning the East was ever going to happen. Butch probably had the most talented roster he'll ever have, and faced an East division that was as bad or worse than it's been in the 25 years since division play began. I know there were injuries, but the games we blew this year were against team we should have beat regardless. Now, if he is going to win it, he'll have to do it with a less talented team and against better competition.

Fan base is split into 2 groups :

Those who settle for 8 wins a year and those who demand better

Butch isn't clean, but he has no other choice. I commend him for that.

No it's not.

I can say I want a championship coach and want to upgrade and still say Butch Jones isn't a bad coach. He isn't. He's done a great job rebuilding. He hasn't gotten UT to the level it can be. If he can't get it done and we move on that's fine. But I'm not gonna act like he's the worst coach in America because people love the sky is falling narrative

I'm just saying, if we go anywhere from 7-5 or worse, what kind of class do you think he's going to have on board for '18?

He's not the worst coach. He is just average. 7 or 8 regular season wins is what you're getting with him.

When is he going to get UT to the level it can be? How many years does he get?

There's a thread on here asking people who their 3 favorite signees this year are, would those of you in here who watch film and keep up with it answer this? Most people in there had different answers. I'd say leave Smith out, that's an obvious one.

If Barnes gets this team to the tournament it will be best UT coaching job I've personally seen.

Then why do you guys act like he's the worst coach ever?!?!

We can all agree he's average so I don't get the hand wringing over him. There's about five people to place him on before Butch for the predicament UT is in.

Agree. He should be SEC coach of the year. Picked 13th and they're currently 6th,

Thunder said he thinks this group of players (not this year) could lead to UT's first Final Four. That's not as crazy as it seems. Imagine Bone/Turner/Pons/Williams/Fulkerson in 2018-2019 with Phillips/Bowden/Schofield/Alexander off the bench

He's not capable of doing that. At all

My favorites would be Labruzza, Murphy, and Chandler. I really Bumphus too. I don't pretend to be able to break down film though. Also love ignont, solely because he had "real life goon" in his twitter bio.

It's exciting times for sure. As hard as they play, I think they can win the SEC tournament this year.

I'd start Bowden over Turner though

I don't think anybody here is acting like he's the worst coach ever, just that after four years it's become pretty clear he's not good enough to get us to where everyone would like. The disagreement seems to be over where the tipping point lies on when that mediocrity actually becomes detrimental to the program going forward.

There are basically five teams that I've got a serious vested interest in; UT FB, UT Men's BB, Everton, the Pacers and the Braves. Of those five, given the current team ownership and financial structure of their leagues, UT FB is far and away my best (likely only) chance of ever seeing one of my teams win their sport's biggest prize. I don't know about you, but I'm not expecting to live forever, so sitting idly by year after year with a coach who we know isn't good enough to reach that goal is beyond frustrating.

Every year that our glory days recede further into the past makes it all the more unlikely we ever see them again. As somebody posted earlier, we've now reached a stage where recruits have no personal memories of UT ever being nationally relevant.

Agree. The man can flat out coach. Seems to me that he gets everything he possibly can out of his players. Which is so hard to do.

I've also never seen a coach criticize and publicly bench his players like he does and they respond so well. It shows they he cares about his guys when they respond like that.
