I think a lot has to do with what kind of player you enjoy watching. I enjoyed Tony Gwynn and Wade Boggs type of players. High average and OBP players.
Millwood might be the perfect example of Leo Mazzone's greatness. Dude was an all star in Atlanta and was meh when he left
There was never any Leo Mazzone greatness. He had three Hall of Famers who never got hurt. Then he went to Baltimore and did nothing with their pitching staff and got fired. McDowell's better than Mazzone ever was.
I agree with some of that but Mazzone had some other moments. Had good bullpens without elite arms, guys like Russ Ortix, millwood. Pete Smith.
McDowell is hella good.
That's fair but baseball was different too.
It wasn't that different. The Mets had recently destroyed Dwight Gooden's arm, and Gooden could have been the greatest pitcher ever. It should have been obvious to the Braves that they needed to baby Steve Avery a little bit; he was only 21. And yet Cox and Mazzone rode him hard and killed his career. Leo Mazzone is a fraud, as far as I'm concerned.
