Auburn/Cam Newton situation (merged)

If somehow they came to a conclusion the week leading up to the SECCG that Newton was ineligible and AU had to forfeit all victories, then I assume the west #2 team goes to Atlanta.

Wouldn't it take a while for the NCAA to formally declare him ineligible, even if the evidence is public? It seems those kind of things always drag out for a long time.

Here's the thing - once Newton asks for cash it is a dangerous game to continue to pursue him. Even if you don't pay him it's alleged Rogers went to boosters - what's stopping some boosters from paying without MSU's knowledge? I sure wouldn't pursue a kid whose father told me it would cost a couple thousand grand for him to come there - it's asking for trouble.

I haven't seen any info that would put any blame on MSU at this point.

Boosters recruiting players, continuing to recruit a player after he allegedly pimped himself out, not reporting said incident until 1 month after it all happened, not elaborating on claims for over 6 months after being asked by the SEC. If all this is true MSU isn't getting away scott-free.

Now Auburn deserves what they are going to get, burying their head in the sand at this late date, I wouldn't even mind seeing the SMU option. Auburn is not cooperating from what I can tell.

How is Auburn not cooperating? They are still not under NCAA investigation yet. I'm sure it won't be long though.

When in doubt you sit the player, I do have a horse in this race but I can honestly say I would want them sit the player. It's just not worth it.

The season is over if they bench him, or if he's guilty. There's no point in benching him now. If Auburn did pay up, sitting him for 3 games will have no effect on the end result.

To your point:

Rogers said on Nov. 28, 2009, he and Cecil Newton followed each other out of Starkville, Miss., after the Ole Miss-Mississippi State game. He said Newton asked him: "What do you think is going to happen? You think it's going to go through?"

He said he was referred to a Mississippi State booster named Bill Bell. Rogers said he left Bell a message telling him he was with Cecil Newton, who wanted to know if the deal was going to happen.

what happens to the SEC office if they didnt disclose all of the information to the NCAA. Like the follow up phone calls.

I wish more people would give me props for breaking this story 2 weeks before anyone on here knew anything about it. Nobody believed me, especially VolDad...

Go look at the reports on USC and you will see this is not correct. USC did not get heavily sanctioned because of Bush getting paid, they got the hammer because they turned a blind eye to what was clearly in front of them.

Auburns season is screwed either way, the longer they keep him in there when they know or should know that he is ineligible is a total different story. To me this wasn't an issue until this week.

Whether Auburn is under investigation is irrelevant, neither was USC during the time period. Auburn keeps this up too much longer with this circus and the hammer that USC got is going to look like chump change this will be Auburn's 8th major violation and yes they are not cooperating.

Crap like this happens, it happened to LSU last year. You have to put him on ice, if in 1% chance the kid is eligible that is life. Right now they should be considering that their whole program might get shutdown.

The Auburn fans that say play him are morons.
Why? because 1.) they are not going to win a championship because it will be stripped 2.) Auburn is going to be sanctioned heavily if they continue this nonsense.

Kenny Rogers: Cecil Newton put price tag on Cam Newton for Mississippi State - ESPN

Game Set Match

Bell, when contacted Thursday night by ESPN.com, confirmed Cecil Newton did ask for money in exchange for Cam Newton signing with Mississippi State. Bell said he was contacted by the NCAA about the matter and spoke to an investigator earlier this week.

"That's all I want to say about it at this point," Bell said.

Bell, a Florida resident, was an offensive lineman at Mississippi State in the early 1980s and played with Rogers.

Cam Newton bribe recording - Killer Frogs [.com] v. 4.0

Just called and got details. Bill in Destin, Florida is MissSt donor and has phone recording of Cam Newtons dad saying Auburn agreed to pay $200k but he would go to Miss for only $180. Very detailed conversation about method of payment and 3 installments of $60, first before signing and second on signing. Said he gave tape to NCAA last week after story started breaking. Already had death threats from Auburn fans.

It will be interesting to see how/if this develops. The SEC is pretty good about hiding this kind of stuff q

Auburn should really think about getting this under control. This is not going to end well for them at all with their current course of action.

Better to win a national title and get it stripped, than to sit him, and have to forfeit most of your games from the season anyways.

Doesn't work like that. The school can't play dumb, 8th major violation with evidence that the kid has been or tried to get paid. This is now on pace to be not a USC but a SMU situation. And yes, the NCAA will punish them even harder if they continue. The forfeits are a given, you are talking major violation and what amounts to blatant disregard of Auburn to pull an ineligible player.

A LSU player was paid last year, it's not the payment, it's the disregard or ignoring the obvious. LSU immediately sat the player eventually they did an internal investigation... canned the player and coach. The forfeits are given but now Auburn has major information that he is not an eligible player and is continuing this nonsense.

If Auburn waits till they get a call from the NCAA they could be looking at SMU. The Auburn AD better get a hold of this. It's the schools responsibility for getting this under control.

If I really didn't like Auburn I would tell them to keep playing him... and when they get the hammer that will be one less team to worry about in the West for about a decade.

There is no way, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, that the death penalty will be handed out in FBS football again.

It'll be similar to the Alabama situation, IMO.

Which one is lying here?

John Bond, a former Mississippi State quarterback and teammate of Rogers who told ESPN.com last week that a man seeking money to sign Cam Newton had approached him, told ESPN.com on Thursday: "My story hasn't changed. I absolutely talked with Kenny Rogers, and there are phone records that will show that."

Rogers said in an interview last Friday with ESPN radio in Dallas he hadn't talked to Bond in more than 20 years. In the same interview last Friday, Rogers also denied having recruited Newton to Mississippi State.

Rogers was just covering his butt on Friday with the public, but now that the FBI is involved, the facts will come out.

Bond and Bell have nothing to hide

Never is a long time. I will take that free bet. The last time I took a free bet I won on this forum. I will try and dig up the thread.

Never say never.

I actually agree with you in part. Auburn will be ok long-term, they continue this circus through the SECC and BCSC and the Heisman, my guess they will get a super hammer.

Why it's nervous time for Auburn - College Football - Rivals.com

Rogers, in his lengthy radio interview that featured his attorney on the line, said Cecil Newton had told him that there was a price tag on signing Cam out of Blinn (Texas) Junior College – “between $100,000 and $180,000.”

More importantly, Rogers described a meeting between himself, Cecil Newton and two Mississippi State coaches his lawyer didn’t allow to be named.

“What I can say on Nov. 27, (2009), me, Mr. (Cecil) Newton and two (Mississippi State) coaches were sitting at the Hilton Garden Inn in Starkville,” said Rogers, who runs a recruiting service out of Atlanta. “And I can’t really can’t (sic) remember how Mr. Newton stated this, but however he said it, one of the coaches was like, ‘No, no, I don’t want to hear that. No, no, don’t hear that’ as if money was brought up or it was going to take money to get him.”

Auburn better hope Kenny Rogers woke up Thursday, decided to call into a Dallas radio station and, with his attorney hovering over his every word, make up a wild story about Cecil Newton and his son.

Possible? Sure. Probable? Less sure.

Nervous on the Plains? How can’t they be?
