Auburn/Cam Newton situation (merged)

Questions remain following NCAA's ruling on Cam Newton - USATODAY.com

This is an insightful interview w/ a NCAA rep.

Again, this is not over.

The timing of this whole process sure seems suspect, and quite favorable from an AU perspective. Notification occurred immediately after their last big game and reinstatement occurs before their next big game.

It determined that his father, Cecil Newton, indeed committed an infraction, leading Auburn to declare the quarterback ineligible and immediately ask the NCAA to reinstate him.

Q. Why did the school rule him ineligible and not the NCAA?

A. By NCAA rules, member schools must take the step of ruling an athlete ineligible if they are made aware of a possible rules violation. Neither the NCAA nor a conference can do that. Once the decision is made, the school can apply for the athlete's reinstatement.

if a school continues to play an athlete after the NCAA has notified it that there could be a problem, the school is subject to even harsher sanctions at the end of the process, should the violations be proved.

this investigation has been going on at least since the summer, when the Southeastern Conference says Auburn was informed of a possible problem with Newton. So when the NCAA concluded after investigating that an infraction had been committed, it contacted the school Monday. So the school declared him ineligible sometime Tuesday.

Guys, remember....the NCAA eligibilty department is totally separate from the NCAA infraction department

What happened over the past three days is just procedure.

It's all about Auburn and the national title and Cam and the Heisman. If Auburn was 6-6 or 7-5 he would be gone! I'm sure Slive was doin some begging to the AA' too! Nuttin worse than someone in a religious/spiritual position and be a lying, hypocritical piece of crap!! Too bad Reggie Bushes dad wasn't a preacher!!

This is true with one caveat, if TCU weren't the #3 team in the BCS, Newton would not be playing.

the guy is a kid, ya he stole a laptop and that's a big deal. hopefully he learned his lesson. the fact that he supposedly cheated 3 times its a non issue. don't sit there and act all high and mighty. if you say you've never cheated in school then your full of s**t. the fact that grown men are attacking a kid is a joke. get a life

At what age does one become an adult?

CBS stood to lose too much money if Cam didn't play this weekend.

Other networks would lose advertising $s if he wasn't in a bowl game.

Don't think that didn't have something to do with the timing. Wouldn't surprise me if the NCAA retroactively declares him ineligible after the season and everyone has made their money.

Truf! But Vol Mania 21 wants you to quit picking on all the kids at CBS. They are just kids trying to make a reasonable living. Whatever they do is ok because they are just babies. 6'6", 250 lb babies.

Solicitation is explicitly illegal in your example which in some ways proves my point.

But isn't that what a lot of people are confused by? I thought the way the rules were written, at least the SEC rules, solicitation did equal illegal, or in the case of an player instead of a john, ineligible.

there's a diff. between pro players and guys in college. i have no problem with people picking on them, but ya'll act like this is the end of the world. not to mention the fact that the OP is acting like he is holier than thou

um, no. It's just sports. I say this at least once day on VN. But, anyways, when do people become adults and must take accountability for their actions? And I never mentioned pro players.

i'll agree with you that he's now an adult altho the very early stages. u expect more out of a 30 year old or a 20-21 year old? my point is that he was probably stuck between a rock and a hard place with what his dad did

You're really caught up on that detail huh Marevul? Im pretty sure you know what the line of thinking was from Mania.

It's not Cam Newton that anybody should be mad at.

His dad is the guy who your anger should be directed to.

True, but the punishment should be directed towards that pos Bobby Lowder. But everyone has chosen to ignore that.
