Sooner? Enlighten me.
According to your logic this offense is just going to turn the corner right before tourney play lol. Which isn't far away mind you. So like I said we'll come back to this conversation very soon. If I'm wrong I'll happily eat my words but I haven't been proven wrong yet. Your excuses are just that for now.

There was a lot of work that was badly missed due to Covid-19. He and Pons needed work, but couldn't get in much. Vescovi was stuck at home, so he couldn't refine things early with the staff. I believe it would have been similar to last year with fulky if he wasn't banged up. Start a little slow, then come on strong in SEC play. We are seeing the similar progression in Pons' shot right now.
yes yes Covid... You keep bringing up SV's injury and Pons shot coming along, but what I keep saying is Fulks body has not changed since his SO year.

Maybe his frame just can't hold more. It happens. Missing out on about 6 months of in depth workouts im sure didn't help either.

I didn’t say I claimed they would. Go back and read my words. I hope they will, but you using the word “trash” about UT’s basketball program in any way, shape, or form shows a lot of ignorance.

Just not a sunshine pumper like some of you that accept mediocrity for $5M a year salary. I like CRB but definitely have questions regarding his offensive schemes as well as his inability to recruit a decent post player while wasting scholarships on players with DII talent.
You have no clue....ZERO......about what goes on within a basketball program. There are tons of information we are not privy to. Decisions are made on factors that we cannot possibly imagine or know. You make your comments based on surface knowledge. Get a grip.

Basketball is a tournament sport. We have 1 sweet 16 to show for paying a coach $5M. Again, I love coach Barnes and what he has done for our program , however, I’m Not sure we’re getting our moneys worth. If he reaches a Final 4 this year or next, I might change my mind.

So Frank Martin is worth $5m then in your opinion?

I don’t need to know what goes on within the program. I’m a fan and go to and watch the games. My eyes do not deceive me

Bargain bin coaches wouldn’t have Keon Johnson, Jaden Springer, and Kim English in the program with Kennedy Chandler and Jahmai Mashack on their way and having Banchero and Smith within a whisker of committing. They’d have Uros and Ticket in the starting 5 as underclassmen.

How much should a coach that is now having TN ranked most of the time and have them at number 1 for the longest stint in program history be compensated... less than market value? With Kyle Alexander in the game CRB would have doubled TN’s EE appearances. TN is now in the 90-95th percentile of college basketball programs if you want to talk math.
I agree he has finally started bringing in some talented players. Only time will tell if he can coach them up and get to a level this program has never been , Final 4. That’s my expectations for making him one of the highest paid CBB coaches in the country.

Thus my question...so in your opinion he’s worth $5m?
Nope, he does not have the longevity that CRB does, however, he does have the Final 4 appearance. Barnes is making more than Bill Self, Roy Williams and Tom Izzo. Nobody can persuade me this makes any sense.

Ok who do you think "deserves" more money, Martin or Barnes?

It’s called market value, also those guys are getting money more than likely outside of their school produced contracts...fact is we have stability and a program which we can count on producing, UCLA felt that was worth ~$5m, Tennessee felt it was worth that to keep him, that simple.

I’m glad we were able to keep CRB It took $5M a year to do it. I get “ market value” and understand he probably leaves for UCLA had Randy Boyd not come to the rescue. All I’m saying is Now it’s time for him to earn it

He already earned it, thus why it’s his salary. He now needs to “earn” an extension/raise etc.

I have no problem with Barnes offense, but I have wondered recently why we stray away from it often. In my opinion the measure of any offense is whether it creates good shots. For the most part, I think we do take good shots but they definitely are not falling. Our perimeter shooting is hot or cold, and of late has been cold despite good looks. Vescovi and Bailey in particular have to be more consistent shooting because if they aren’t their value on the court really diminishes. James is a decent shooter but also streaky, but despite being passive offensively he does contribute in other ways.

Secondly, Barnes has always preached an inside out philosophy, but something is wrong with Fulkerson, in my opinion, that we don’t know. Perhaps his hand/wrist or conditioning, but he is not even close to the same offensive player he was the second half of last year. And he isn’t producing those notable energy plays that have been the trademark his whole career. We cannot function without an inside game but right now our best post player is Springer, which isn’t ideal. Fulkerson, often isn’t even calling for the ball and is content setting screens 20+ feet on the perimeter. Pons is playing better on offense of late but his inside game is simply a fade away jump shot.

Personally I don’t know why we don’t let Fulkerson settle at the high post. He wouldn’t get beat up as much, but regardless, he doesn’t look right to me. At the beginning of the year, we expected upside and improvement but we have stalled offensively. Hope we play out of it, but it starts with hitting perimeter shots as that opens up everything.

Great analysis. I think sometimes we pass up good shots to look for even better shots. If wish they would start shooting if they are open. If Fulky continues to struggle, lets just clear out for Springer and Johnson to go one on one
