Barnes on JJJ and JP - "it's up to them“

Barnes doesn't give young players the playing time to learn and grow defensively. If you don't let him play through mistakes, then he will never be given the opportunity to improve. He's like this with guards. He'll let Maishak and Awaka play through mistakes, but not Edwards.
You earn that trust in practice, not SEC play.

They have this thing called “practice”. You can learn there without re-seeding your team.

I think it's fair to wonder why there was no legitimate attempt to develope Edwards. Had he saw more game action he might be serviceable for 3 or 4 minutes a half.

Or maybe from the film he got those chances combined with the minutes in practice they determined that was unlikely and they were better off giving those minutes to Key & Zeigler (who clearly is still developing).

More minutes for Edwards, who knew that was missing piece to a F4 run, you should apply to be on staff my guy!
I'm not saying that it guarantees anything. But they're running 2 small guards into the ground with a team that can't score. Playing Edwards and seeing if he has the hot hand is at least worth a shot.

Ok, sounds good. Another 3 for 26 shooting night from Vescovi and ZZ will have us out in the first round again.
There is no evidence that Edwards would be any more effective than those two offensively, yet there is an abundance of evidence, not to mention practice reps that you aren't privy to that would certainly seem to indicate ZZ and Vescovi can defend circles around Edwards.

So, you're advocating taking a risk that Edwards MIGHT provide a spark, no matter how big, on offense while knowingly sacrificing multiple possessions on defense. That feels like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

But that just sounds like a "throw crap against the wall and see what sticks" type of mentality. That's the expected attitude of a fan that isn't intimately familiar with all the daily details of this team and its personnel. The coaches obviously have a reason not to be giving BJE more playing time. Why is that not proof enough? I understand the frustration of seeing us struggle, but making a major lineup change for the sake of making a change is reckless and reactionary. Coaches don't tend to operate that way. Playing time is earned on the practice floor, not just handed out due to fan frustration.

Yep, I'm not a coach and just watch the team. I just see a team where no one can create their own shot most of the time and Edwards is a shot making guard. Other teams can play freshman, why not us?

Defense doesn't matter if you can't score. Look at the past 10 national champions. All of them were top 10 in Kenpom offensive efficiency. You can't win every tournament game 55-54. Some team you're playing is going to shoot 50% from the field and 40% from 3 and then you are screwed.

When has he been a shot making guard ? In high school ? Because he has scored under 15 points all year in 12 games. Not many minutes, but still, a shot making guard should average over 1.3 ppg

Fine, don't play him. Then, just don't complain we we shoot 2 of 21 from 3 in the 1st or 2nd round and get bounced early,

Barnes has played several freshmen extensively over the past few years. This isn't freshman Jamal Lewis languishing on the sideline.

I don’t think we need to be worried about winning a national championship with this team. But the defense IS keeping them in the mix for a S16, EE, and even a FF if the roster returns to full strength.

Barnes optimizes his best assets. Chandler, Springer, and Johnson were all good or great on offense. Johnson was equally as good on defense. It’s not like it’s the exact same approach every year. Grant was offense oriented. You utilize what works best with who you land. In years past Duke, UNC, KU, UK, and others were able to pick the best players. TN generally gets to pick from recruits that the blue bloods have passed on. Sometimes they are going to be really good defenders that are offensively challenged.

Anybody know the +/- with BJE?

I'm saying we should find more time for Edwards. His assist to turnover rate is better than Key, and he shoots it much better. Key isn't a very good defender. I know he's from Celina and people like him, but Edwards has a much higher ceiling as a player.

I think JJJ and JP should be let into at least the next two home games for a little playing time at least. Instead of waiting for tournament to play them. They would be awful rusty.

If only there was a stat for when defenders are blown by and other defensive eff ups. That’s why I’m curious about the over/under. But with so few minutes to grade it might not have much meaning.
