Barnes replacement?

We would have run Dusty May out of town before this season ever happened. The man never won more than 19 games in his first four seasons. Maybe he actually is a really good coach, but it just as likely if not more likely that he is pretty “meh” and this season will ultimately prove to be a complete anomaly .
You don’t think there’s a slight difference in the resources at FAU compared to here? If you couldn’t see those kids were better-coached than ours you weren’t watching very closely.

These media idiots calling for CRB to be fired would be falling all over themselves condemning UTK if they actually did it.

Tennessee Should Consider Hiring FAU Coach Dusty May As Rick Barnes Underperforms Once Again: Guilbeau

Not saying I agree with anything that was written but it's a common narrative that UT should move on from Barnes.
I love it when people post something like this under the pretense the they " really don't agree with it'. There are about 300 colleges that would love to underperform into a sweet 16 berth. That was clickbait for the"Barnes can't coach crowd" ....worked pretty well on you, didn't it.

Click bait. Not even worth the read as is this post. The most successful men’s basketball coach in our programs history as it relates to 25+ wins/season. And we want to replace him after a sweet sixteen run on the heels of losing our alpha male (ZZ). He runs a clean program and his players appreciate his toughness and love. They would do anything for the guy. A lot of our fans would rather have sketchy Bruce back or Nate Oaks who puts up with anything as long as they’re elite players. How far did they make it this year btw? Oh yeah, same as us. FAU coach is impressive for sure. I like the guy. But history tells us more times than not, those lesser known Coaches that catch lightening in a bottle don’t succeed in a larger program. I’ll take Barnes any day if the week.

And if you don’t understand that coaches catch lightening in a bottle every so often. So with your logic, the coach at Florida is a better coach than Barnes because on that particular day, they beat us. And Barnes is a better coach than the coaches at Kansas, Texas, Duke, and 22 other schools. Do you understand that any team can lose on any given day. So yes, we were watching. Only difference, we understand the game of basketball.

Barnes absolutely got our coached by him. Anyone who watched the game recognizes that, but that is neither here nor there to the point I’m making.

What I am saying is that this is Dusty May’s first good season in five years as FAU’s head coach. If he came here and dropped four seasons without an NCAA tournament appearance like he did down there, he wouldn’t get a fifth season.

Dusty May Will probably have a very successful career. He is a very good coach. He’s also close with Danny White via his brother who is the AD at FAU. That said, the timelines are a few years off. We’ll continue with the hall of fame coach we have who has beaten KY more, won an SEC championship and an SEC tournament and made us a regular in the NCAA tournament. Dusty May will have a new job next year— that he’ll deserve. Barnes will have the same job, that he deserves.

But…depending on what May’s next job is…the timeline might work out for him to leave that job in 4-5 years to replace Barnes after Barnes retires. If that next job is the level of, say, Boston College, he could leave that job and go to UT down the road. But if he lands a Syracuse level job, he’s probably got that as long as they want him. Because that’s the type you don’t leave.

Barnes will be here till he decides to retire. Will that be next season ? 2 seasons? Or will he be like Boheim and be here 10 more seasons? Who knows. Barnes is a very good coach and chances of TN getting a coach as good or better than him right away are not real high. Just enjoy Barnes....it could be worse...alot worse.

Always the shiny ball that gets the attention. Don't know a darned thing about the guy, but I'm not ready to jump on the "hot name". Still remember the Shaka mania....among others. Moot point tho. UT doesn't have an opening and I doubt we'll have one anytime soon.

I posted it because it's a timely article that posits what many on here, and the national media, have argued for on many occasions. It's called news. I personally do not agree that Barnes should be fired notwithstanding FAU going to the Final Four. I do think it strengthens the writers argument though.

I don’t agree at all with the “since 2008” rap on Barnes but if you want to use the “since 2008” argument to say Barnes is trending downward because he hasn’t made an Elite 8, then you could also say that Barnes at Tennessee has done better in his first 5 NCAA tourneys here (2 Sweet 16’s, 2 other first round wins, and 1 first round loss) than Barnes did in his last 6 trips to the tourney at Texas after 2008 (0 Sweet 16’s, 3 first round wins and 3 first round losses). That’s an upward trend for Barnes, not downward.

What happens after this year? Who knows……not me and not those who are convinced the Sweet 16 is the ceiling for Rick Barnes at Tennessee.
