Pearl paid the ultimate price for a small secondary violation. Yes, he lied to to the NCdoubleAzzclowns. The fact is, there is a much less chance of Pearl breaking rules again than any other coach we would hire. Two things I am pretty certain of - Pearl will not commit a major violation and won't ever lie to the NCAA again. Consider this: Louisville recently hired Petrino back for a second stint. Wait and see, he will have them playing in the ACC championship game within two years if not sooner. Louisville's AD will be considered a genius. Why not Pearl? Why not UT?
Imagine you're a happily married man. One day you find out that your wife has been banging another man and lying to you about it. You divorce her.
Have you ever heard of Donnie Jones at Central Florida in Orlando?

If you hire Pearl, you have to know that at some point he's going to betray your trust in him. It's what he did and it's what he's always done. Petrino is the same way.
At least make an attempt to come up with an analogy that might fit as the adultry isn't anywhere close. Adultry would be comparable to having a coach with a gambling problem intentially throw games.
How about this, you're a happliy married man and you find out your wife lied to you when you asked her if she bought another pair of shoes but came back the next day and admitted she did buy the shoes. You operated on a strict family budget and the extra shoes put you in a hard position.
No way in hel_ you divorce over this in the first place and if you did, after the next bad girlfriend you would probably come to your senses and realize what a terrible mistake you made getting a divorce over something that small and go begging her to come back.
Why do you have this opinion? What were CBP's betrayals at his 2 coaching stints prior to UT? What were his problems at UT prior to BBQ-gate? If he is such a questionable character as you portray, why did UT hire him in the first place?
Petrino couldn't be trusted to stay put. I don't recall him having other problems beyond the obvious motor cycle incident.

I get that winning fixes everything, but there are plenty of coaches who can win here. I just wish more people here had the confidence in UT to agree.
It would be more like your wife stole the shoes and is caught on camera doing so. She then attempts to have the workers at the shoe store lie and say she was never there. When confronted she denies it is her on the tape and continues until she gets to court to face the charges. At least make an attempt to come up with an analogy that might fit as the adultry isn't anywhere close. I don't think people think of it that UT can't attract a better coach. It has more to do with a lack of confidence that the UT administration can/will get it done. Personally, I have 100% confidence they'll screw up the hire as usual. Many fans look at Pearl as more of a sure thing.
A lot of the fan base views the administration as taking them for granted. The way I view the administration hiring practice is: Hire a marginally successful, up-and-comer from a small mid-major program. As usual the fan base blindly gets behind the new coach by buying tickets, celebrating all those 2 and 3 star recruits as really 4 and 5 star recruits that are diamonds in the rough. Gets a first year pass because of the situation he inherited. Second year team underachieves but still gets a pass because "You can't turn it around in one year". Attendance is still good. Third year sucks equally and the newness has worn off, people start jumping ship. Coach fired. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Occasionally they'll capture lighting in a bottle ie Pearl but most of the time you get Cuonzoed.
No. I hadn't but thanks for posting because I wasn't aware of any. I read the article. It sounds like they never talked to the ncaa and just accepted penalties
I agree with all of this. I just wish more people would use their energy on calling out the administration, instead of just accepting that they'll suck, letting them off the hook, and putting all the energy into backing Pearl to protect us from them.
Do you mean like petitioning the governor to remove Cheek and Hart?
Once upon a time Bruce held a weepy press conference where he admitted to lying and promised to be clean forever. Four days later he committed a secondary violation and didn't come clean about it to UT compliance. The people in the UTAD know that A) they can't trust Pearl to be straight with them, and B) if they hire him back and he gets busted for something else, the NCAA will bury us this time. I don't see how they can even consider it. There are many, many other basketball coaches out there.
If that's what it takes, and if the gov isn't on board then he needs to go too, but I'm sure he wants the Vols to win again as much as anyone. The point being UT is at it's best when Football and Basketball are wining and proffitable. The entire University benefits.
wait, remove the gov if he doesn't want Pearl back too?

If he did that and they buried us, would we really be worse off than we are now with Martin?
If Pearl comes back and gets in trouble with the NCAA again, then we'll have to do the same thing we did last time he got us in trouble -- hire an underqualified, unproven coach from a backwater conference because no decent coach will consider us with a bad NCAA situation, and that situation will be much worse next time. It'll set us back five more years. Martin was obviously a crappy hire, but Hamilton's options were extremely limited. Thanks to Bruce.
Why back someone whom we know the NCAA will be closely monitoring, and who has a history of lying to our own compliance department? Why risk having to hire Cunozo Martin again? There are 350 Division 1 basketball coaches. Surely one of them could win in Knoxville.
