Basketball Coaching Rumor Mill Heating Up...

- Look for UConn assistant Andre Lafluer to be in on a lot of head coaching jobs. With Coach Calhoun heading for retirement and on a year-to-year self-evaluation of what "HE" want to do. Sources say that he is going to push both Lafluer and DBO Glenn Miller for HC jobs.

- We are told that Rod Barnes will be the pick at FAMU.

- If NC St goes after all the big hitters and strikes out VCU HC Shaka Smart seems like the candidate that makes sense. But if things fall through don’t rule out Jeff Capel. They know he can get players out of the area. Has already built VCU and Oklahoma (despite never being a good fit in Norman). If Smart does leave VCU look for Andre La Fluer to be a serious candidate for VCU. VCU have hired a Minority the last 3 times and the last two have been from Big time programs.

- UT plans to have a coach within two weeks. The five coaches at the top of UT's list are Pittsburgh HC Jamie Dixon, Villanova HC Jay Wright, Alabama HC Anthony Grant, Texas A&M HC Mark Turgeon and Wichita St HC Gregg Marshall. Marshall is the only one they will have a chance with.

- We are told that St. Mary's HC Randy Bennett has turned down the Utah job.

- Missouri St HC Cuanzo Martin is expected to be a popular choice at Missouri.

- Word is that Tulsa HC Doug Wojick will interview at Georgia Tech. Another rumor has New Mexico assistant Craig Neal being the guy and hiring Mark Price on staff. Other top targets are Chris Mooney of Richmond and Gregg Marshall of Wichita St. With Tommy Amaker of Harvard, Shaka Smart of VCU and Chris Mack of Xavier mixed in.

- Two NBA names keep popping up. Scott Skiles and Eric Musselman. Musselman people have contacted Missouri and Arizona in case Miller leaves for NC State, also Skiles is interested in the Georgia Tech position. He wants to do well at Georgia Tech cause he feels IU will open in 2 years and Skiles is a Indiana boy and lives in Bloomington.

- Brian Gregory name hasn't been mentioned much in the Media, but he is working the back end of the High major gig I.E. Georgia Tech and N.C. State. Gregory feels they fill his needs of a High Major job.

- Vanderbilt assistant King Rice is emerging as the leader at Manhattan. The former UNC standout has been at Vandy for the past five seasons. He's also been an assistant at Oregon, Illinois State and Providence. He is a New York Native.

- Ole Miss is not going to give head coach Andy Kennedy an extension. Kennedy has

three years remaining on a contract that pays $1.3 million annually. The state maxium for a contract is four years, so Ole Miss has typically extended Kennedy after the season to keep him at the max. He was not extended after his arrest in 2009 following altercation with a taxi driver in Cincinnati.

- Staying in the SEC....keep an eye on the situation at South Carolina. Three high profile players have recently left the program, and I am beginning to hear some grumblings from people close to the situation.

The state maximum for a contract is four years

That is hilarious. It's a good thing Ole Miss won't ever be successful enough in football or basketball to make it a real issue.

Throw in drinking and driving (in its strictest sense) isn't illegal down there... it's like a different country.

Rumors going around from a friend of mine who collected these from different sources.

- We are told that Fresno St and Western Kentucky should open anytime

- Providence will end its relationship with HC Keno Davis as soon as this weekend. Early names will
include Vermont HC Mike Lonergran, Fairfield HC Ed Cooley, Old Dominion HC Blaine Taylor, and TCU HC Jim Christian will try and get involved.

- We have been told that Auburn HC Tony Barbee would bounce if given the opportunity. Apparently he has butted heads with the administration

- We have it on good authority that Bradley will hire someone with DI head coaching experience. Could Keno Davis land on his feet at Bradley?

- Texas Tech has fired Pat Knight. Let the Billy Gillespie talk start... A “Get Gillispie” campaign, has been started by a group of Texas Tech students who have sported T-shirts with an Obama-esque visage of Billy Gillispie on the back accompanying the word “change,” in the
hope of persuading their school to pursue Gillispie.

- We have heard from a good source that both Oklahoma and Utah have reached out to
former Alabama HC Mark Gottfried to gauge his interest.Oklahoma HC Jeff Capel's buyout is the buyout is only slightly more than $2 million.

- Things do not look good in Baton Rouge for Trent Johnson

- We have heard that UAB HC Mike Davis would like to bounce if given an opportunity.

- We are told that Cincinnati HC Mick Cronin would make a strong push for the Arkansas job if it opens.

- Georgia Tech HC Paul Hewitt's contract will automatically renew on April 15, though he must
be given a month's notice if he is not to be retained. Thus: March 15 is the deadline.

- Florida Gulf Coast, one source says first call will be to Florida assistant Larry Shyatt. We hear that Creighton assistant Steve Merfeld is tight with the AD and will have a strong shot. Other names include Kansas assistant Danny Manning, Iowa assistant Kirk Speraw and Ohio St assistant Jeff Boals.

- Missouri HC Mike Anderson said he wanted to retire at Missouri

- We are told that Tennessee assistant Steve Forbes is looking to bounce ahead of any NCAA sanctions. Word is that he is interested in the Indian Hills and NW Florida JC jobs.

haha

Craig Neal and Mark Price are just obligatory interviews.

Chris Mooney is the man for the job unless a lot changes.

Thats what I have heard, with Smart being the backup plan.

Some food for thought. As of yesterday 3-24 according to the ODU AD they had not been contacted for permission to speak with Blaine Taylor. Things might have changed by today.

Typically, seeking official permission is one of the last things you do, as it ensures for plausible deniability by all parties until action becomes imminent.

Simply, you don't do so because it allows AD's to make these types of statements.

Although that may not be the case here. Just guessing.

which big east team gets the better coach, Marquette or Providence?

Any guesses on names?
Providence hired Ed Cooley. He'll do well.

Brian Gregory would be at the top of Marquette's list, but he appears to be looking elsewhere. They might do what they did last time and promote from within.

I'll be surprised if Buzz Williams to Oklahoma doesn't happen within the week.

Buzz was on the Tony Bruno show and among a lot of quality anti coach speak he did say something alarming, that he hates recruiting. That 6 players on his roster signed without an official visit. When he asks for a commit and they don't, he just moves on. I was surprised that any coach wanting to move up would do that.

I'll concede that point. Generally Taylor will talk to other schools as a courtesy with the knowledge of the ODU athletic dept. I am hearing NC State is interested in him also.

On a side I also think Cooley will do well at Providence

Any word how Wood's doing as an A.D. there at ODU? He'd be an A.D. I'd give a serious look at if Hamilton is let go. However, I doubt he leaves Norfolk, its home.

Wood is doing a really good job. Totally agree I don't think he will leave either. I also think that despite the talk Blaine stays in Norfolk also.
