Miss St had large problems. No doubt to a black athlete, playing for a minority head coach would be a plus. In the end those players still want to win and play at the next level, if their talent warrants it.

I'm sure it would be a plus but most of these guys are closest with one of their position coaches. There are plenty of black position coaches in the SEC. I think they whole thing is overblown in it's impact on players. It's just another issue to debate. If the issue were so important to players then the black HC's in the NCAA should be able to recruit like madmen and that hasn't happened. This issue is more relevant to the old men who make up the BCA than it is to the young men who are growing up playing the game and will be the coaches of the future.

The only ones I've heard that claim Gill turned Auburn down are apologist Auburn fans willing to believe any fantasy in order to maintain hope for Chizik. Maybe you can provide a ligitimate link (no blogs please), but I've not seen any journalist say that. I don't think he'd choose coaching in the MAC over the SEC.
I've heard it from some pretty connected folks involved in the Army hiring process.

Yeah, the programs at Auburn and Mississippi Mistake are really comparable.

Yes, they are. They are both in the SEC and that was the point of the comment. Not which team has a better program. The point is that a black man recruiting in the SEC is nothing new.

A black coach at one of the big 6 in this conference would have certainly made a recruiting impact in the SEC.

Actually, it's been all over the place and I don't feel any need to hunt down an article for you. You shouldn't be assuming what Gill's interest level was, anyway. Assumptions like that further convolute the issue. Gill could have a host of reasons why Auburn or the SEC are not the right fit for him at this time. The SEC is a draw for some coaches but not all. Look at Butch Davis. You're making assumptions about what situation Gill wanted to be when you actually have no idea.

I have no idea what obvious outcome you're leading me to.

3 black guys, out of millions in America jumped you and the people around didn't jump in to help? Am I supposed to guess that everyone sucks?
Yes.. Thats what I'm saying

maybe, but he would have had a very tough chore. He's landlocked to southern Alabama by a bunch of very good recruiters surrounding him.

Um, you're making that exact same assumption that he turned it down.

No, I said that it was reported but I don't know. My original point was that the criticism of the situation by the media and fans is ridiculous when the details of the situation and Gill's interest level are unknown. Obviously, he had enough interest to interview but we have no clue how that interview process went.

Yeah, reported by Auburn bloggers and no one else.

I choose to believe that Gill would have taken that job over the one he has in a New York minute. Unless of course he's holding out for the highly desired Iowa State job.

I think that black coaches have just as many opportunities as white coaches. If you are a leader, people will follow. Several balck coaches such as Ty Willingham and so on were given multiple chances but failed misreabbly. If I am an AD, I pick the most qualified person, regardless of skin color. Maybe guys like Turner Gill do not interview well or do not have a good plan in place for recruiting. Maybe they do not know how to convince an AD how they will turn a program around or how their coaching staff will be successfull. Auburn gave Gill a chance and he did not convince them he was the best candidate. I don't think we should hire black head coaches simply because society says it is not fair or there is not enough of them. I personally think the Pittsburgh Steelers hired Mike Tomlin over Whistenhunt because he was black. Afterall, the Pitt owner came up with the Rooney Rule. When people discuss the list of top available coaches in the NCAA, only Gill stands out as a Top black candidate and he coaches Buffalo. It will probably take a black HC leading a team to a National Championship to open more doors.

then how is it a black / white argument, like the one you're making?
How is it not?? Look, you obviously don't live in the same "real" world I do. People like you can live in this little fantasy place where everythings just great, but the truth is this crap goes on everyday like it or not. I'm a realist and see things for what they are not what I'd like it to be..Try waking up and quit trying to get someone on this thread to help make your argument.

I dont recall where I seen it but. TG wife is white, and she told him she didnt want to go to a "southern" school. Cant say if it was rumor or fact.

that's generally what I do. I can't make my own arguments so I enlist other to do so for me. It's probably because I live in fantasyland and just haven't had the life experiences you have.

I certainly hope to have the realist approach when I grow up.

Now, you keep believing that reality is the reason you're a freaking bigoted POS and generalizing based upon the actions of three thugs. You're destined for greatness. Maybe you're greatness and my dreamworld will someday cross paths. I can't wait. It's always a treat to meet the mental giants of our day.

damn it boy , it's getting rough in here:eek:hmy:

That brings us to another possibility, that Gill turned the job down because he knew many Auburn supporters, boosters included, are prejudiced, especially given his wife is white. Any way you look at it that is still very pathetic that a black coach has to think about things like this.

I don't even pay attention to Auburn blogger so, no. It was actually mentioned in the first article I read about the hiring and I couldn't believe nobody was bringing it up. Choose to believe what you want but don't pass it off as a fact. Believe it or not, there are some coaches who don't want to be in the SEC.

My biceps measure 32" and I put gravel in my eggs every morning! My father was a hockey player, his father was a lumberjack.
