Bearden RB Devrin Young Commits to Tennessee!

There is no value in a 5'7 CB, the game has evolved into taller, faster WR's, if TN is going to trot out a 5'7 corner against the likes of AJ Green or Julio Jones then he'd better be a sure thing, best cover corner ever with a ton of leaping ability.

Lookit, I really agree with that. But isn't Florida playing a 5'8" CB(Riggs)? I just can't visualize it. I think that Dooley took a look at ST, decided to recruit someone for it, and saw Young as the guy. Dooley's been telling Oku to trust his blocking and run aggressively. That was like telling Oku to run into the pile, because the blocking wasn't opening holes. Young is a player that can stop and turn on a dime, which makes the first defenders miss and creates a hole or two.

Give the kid a chance. He gets about 18 yards a carry right now. He can catch, run and he loves the Vols! It appears Harbaugh liked Young as well. GBO!!!

Yea, I mean, that 18 YPC is against some great HS competition.

I've seen plenty on here complain about this kid being a 3 star. I'll just say this: I played high school ball with Marsalis Teague, who was ranked as a 4 star athlete coming out. After watching the highlights of this Devrin Young kid, I'll be the first to tell you that although Marsalis was an excellent player in high school, he wasn't on the level of Devrin Young. He may be ranked as a 3 star right now, but he won't be one for long.

And taking 18 ypc and trying to use it against someone is moronic. He's not playing against middle schoolers. The kid's a good football player with speed and talent. How someone finds fault with this offer and commitment is beyond me.

So this kid is 5'7 and runs a 4.5 40. That just doesn't sound very impressive to me. What does he weigh, 145 lbs? I'm not trying to be a buzz killer but UT has had 220 lb fullbacks that were faster than that. I haven't seen the kid though, so I could be wrong. Hope the hometown kid turns out to be a gamer.

Not sure where you all are getting your facts, but Rivals and contributing SEC coaches consider 4.5 speed in running backs blistering speed.

NFL combines only register about 4.62 in backs on average.

Seriously people, some of you complaing when we let an in state kid get out, and now some of you are complaining that we got an in state kid. Are you people freaking crazy. I mean seriously, you know how stupid people sound complaining about not getting an in state kid, and then when we do, you also complain. I bet you would be the same idiots who would complain if you hit the lottery, you would complain and ***** because it wasn't more.

Just be happy that an in state kid wanted to stay and bleed orange for us!!!!!

Clearly you're new to the thread. Forget the 40 time, you don't get timed by people that are really serious about it 'til the NFL combine anyway. The guy has run well under a 10.80 100m twice this year and finished 2nd in the TSSAA 100m finals. The guy will in fact be one of the fastest players on the team.

Forget the speed concerns. If you want to criticize the height and weight then at least there's some merit there.

That might be a tad misleading as I'm assuming there's a substantial curve thrown in there by the bruiser backs. Montario Hardesty, who most people wouldn't consider a "speed" back, ran a 4.49 at the combine. That's not to completely discount the point I think you're trying to make, 4.5 is by no means "slow", but blistering doesn't come into play until you're into the low 4.4's or better.

Just quoting an article from Rivals on 40 yard speed trials.
And a combine summary from ESPN.

Hardesty ran a 10.36 100M, JSYK.

Sorry if this has been asked but is there a way to watch the game tonight? Thanks

I'm not trying to criticize the kid. All I'm saying is that when I look at the whole package (height, weight, speed) I'm not overly impressed. I'm not saying it was a bad pickup, I really can't make that call (I haven't seen him play). I know there are more to a player than just the numbers but that's all I have to work with.

If you are interested in "numbers" then look at them. His numbers - yards, yards per carry, touchdowns, touchdowns per touch, return yards, TDs per return. His numbers couldn't be much better.

I just watched his youtube video from the first 5 games this year and it's obvious this kid has top class speed on the football field. The way he accelerates and pulls away from defenders reminds me of Chris Johnson. I know these are high school defenders but Devrin seems to have another gear that they don't. As a Bearden Grad (93) I'm super excited to have a Bulldog playing at UT that isn't a punter...although you gotta love the Colquitts. I think he can definitely make some plays for us next year.
