Belichick to UNC

Pat Forde described this coaching search in a way that makes Auburn seem normal.
Yep. There are also apparently a lot of questions as to who is in charge of it (the AD or the Chancellor). BB has had direct talks with Lee Roberts, who likes the idea of hiring him, but it is getting a lot of pushback from the Board.

I wonder if UNC has seen the Deon show and the attention/money it brought to Colorado and this is their attempt to duplicate that.
I was talking to a friend of mine who donates to the Rams Club and saying the same thing . He was saying that it was different. I kind think it’s the same, at least from the point that everyone is going to pay attention to what they’re doing now .

Lots of division in the BOT and people loyal to Mack who are pissed off at Bubba for firing him. Bill is basically asking for the keys to the castle and given them his blueprint for success. I think there is an uneasiness that still lingers there from the Butch Davis NCAA issues, when UNC tried to become more relevant in football.

UNC is not a completely irrelevant football program though like Colorado was. They're a basketball school first of course, but they haven't had horrible seasons since the end of Fedora's tenure (and Fedora was actually pretty good there until his last 2 seasons). Belichick is obviously a big name, but he doesn't have the public charisma/image of Deion and he also doesn't have the polarizing nature of Deion (both people who love and hate Deion watch him). I don't think hiring a coach purely on the basis of one who could get attention is a great strategy for them (it was for Colorado - not sure it is for them). BB has never coached in college and he'd be 73 at the start of next season. Realistically, how long would they expect him to be there? It doesn't seem like a long-term proposition.

I totally get why they want to be relevant at football, especially now with the 12-team playoff. That program is totally capable of winning the ACC which would get them an automatic berth, at least how the CFP is currently constituted. Mack consistently had good players on his teams, which always seemed like they were less than the sum of their parts.

I may be in the minority, but why not give it a shot if you’re UNC? After all, you’re UNC. It could end in disaster, but it might turn out great. If they hire Sumrall, he’ll leave the moment the Kentucky job opens up. Hell, for all we know, there could be a breakaway in the next 5–6 years, leaving UNC competing for titles in the second division. You might as well roll the dice and see if it works.

1. He's never coached in college
2. He's 72

Again, this is North Carolina, not Alabama or Ohio State. They’ve had just one 10-win season this century. As for his age, he’ll likely coach for 4–5 years, but whoever they hire is probably only going to stay that long anyway. If they go the up-and-comer route, that coach will likely use UNC as a stepping stone and leave in a few years. His lack of college coaching experience isn’t really a big deal. College football is different from what it was even four years ago. Before the portal and NIL, it was a relationship-based business. Now, it’s become very transactional, which wouldn’t be an issue for Belichick.

What gives me pause is the thing w/ his son being the coach in waiting .
How many head coaches 'in waiting' ever actually got the job?
Jimbo Fisher fits the bill, I think. I thought he was head coach in waiting for Bobby Bowden.
I can't think of any other major ones.

Chip Kelly at Oregon
Bret Bielema at Wisconsin
Joker Phillips at Kentucky
Danny Hope at Purdue

The NCAA actually passed a rule around 2011/2012 that restricted the recruiting ability of someone who had been designated as a head coach in waiting. I guess to dissuade schools from doing it.

I think it’s a little different than most with the coach in waiting being his son. A lot of times the coach in waiting gets tired of waiting and leaves for a better setup.

Yeah, this is something that is going to "fall through" at the last minute

BB need like 25 NFL wins or so to pass Shula on the all time list

Seems like something he would want to do

Giants are going to be needing a coach soon

If this happens it will be Gruden level dumb on UNCs part. Fire one dinosaur to hire a worse dinosaur.

Why not keep Mack Brown if you’re going to all this trouble to hire another washed up coach?

Makes no sense.

Belichick really doesn't need to flash all of his super bowl rings to attract top notch talent to UNC. He just needs to be himself and show off his funny side like he did at Brady's roast.
