Best Whiskey

Question for you guys who drink whiskey on the rocks or neat...is it an acquired taste that takes a while to get used to or did you just start doing it and love it from the beginning?

Like beer...few people probably actually enjoyed their first beer but as you continue to drink it it grows on you.

Thats a mater for serious debate. I'm of the opinion that one proper bar style ice cube and a small bit of water to bring out effervescence is best.

Ok, but is that always the way you drank it? Or did you start out mixing with coke or whatever and eventually 86 the coke and start drinking it straight?

I always liked jack and coke. But I started drinking straight whiskey at OCI in college. The bar line was always so long and I hated waiting after downing my jack and coke. Not only that but they would give me more whiskey for the same price when I ordered it straight. It was a little hard to swallow at the time, but I got used to it and now I love it. I have refined my palate and I can really taste the subtleties between different whiskeys

Totally depends on the whiskey. Crown is a mixer for me, not good enough to drink solo. Adding ice is a personal thing. I don't do it. The spirits that need ice are the ones that bite, I don't drink those. I drink what I like neat. I'd its a new bottle, I pour it and let it rest for 10-15 minutes first.

Hes asking if you liked straight whiskey the moment you tried it. Or did it grow on you?

Depends on the whiskey. Some I like right out of the gate, others I don't. There are so many variations I don't think I can say I had to develop a taste. I try everything at least once. (no homo though)

Started off with cheap ish at parties in HS... Black Velvet or what have you. Few bucks for a fifth, grab a 2 liter of coke and you're set.

I get wicked hangovers now and keep my drinkin to once a week, so when I do drink, I spring for the nice stuff. Currently got some Glenfiddich 18 on hand, but I'll typically spring $75-100 range for scotch.

So at what point did you stop mixing it? Or was it a gradual change?

Kinda like beer for me...first few ones I can't honestly say I enjoyed but I kept on drinking it because I wanted to like it and eventually I did. Now I love the stuff.

Ardbeg is my favorite Scotch.
Middleton is my favorite Irish Whiskey.
I don't have a favorite American whiskey or bourbon.

I'm pretty sure that this is considered to be the "correct" method by those who are somehow deemed to be experts on the subject, even though not one I subscribe to anymore. I was always told that a splash of water will "open" the whiskey but I never noticed a huge difference and when I tried the one rock method I noticed that I never enjoyed the second half of the drink as much as the first. So now I just go neat with any kind of whiskey.

As for original question, for me it was more a recognition that straight whiskey didn't have to be consumed in shot form. When I was 18/19 I never thought I'd be able to just drink a glass of whiskey bc it burned like hell when I did a shot of it (and bc it was rotgut). A couple years later I realized it was called sippin' whiskey for a reason.

If I'm drinking a fine whiskey, then I'll drink it neat for sure. But for everyday drinking, I really prefer to have a cold drink. That's the only reason I drink it over rocks. When I'm at home I use these things:

Seen those before but never actually tried them, I'll have to give it a shot. And unless I'm standing outside in the summer time, I have no preference for a cold drink.

I'm typically warm-natured, maybe that's why. I also don't prefer red wine. I like it and drink it with certain foods, but I normally won't drink it by itself.

Ridgemont Reserve 1792 is top notch considering it is less than $30 for a .75 Liter. If I cant get Eagle Rare, 1792 is my new go to.

Golf, I'm assuming you've had Dickel before? What did you think of the tail? Mine tasted charcoalish.

Did you know Old Forester is the only bourbon that has been sold continuously before prohibition, during prohibition, and now after prohibition. Impressive.

I assume they had a special permit to sell "medicine" during prohibition?
