Best Whiskey

Anyone had Troy and Sons from Asheville, I believe? I had someone highly recommend it to me last night. I'd never heard of it.

Got a couple of bottles as gifts over the holidays. One was a bottle of Basil Hayden which was great but one I'd had many times before but I also got one I wasn't familiar with:

I'd had their reserve and their Rye before but the small batch is definitely my favorite of the three, good stuff.

Jefferson's is very solid. Their older Presidential Select was 100% Stitzel-Weller bourbon (original Pappy). I bought as many as I could find. The latest ones are blends I believe.

Really want to try their rye. I had the opportunity to buy the latest release of their Aged-at-Sea bourbon, but I had just plopped down for a few bottles of Four Roses Limited Small Batch, so I couldn't really go for it.

Have you tried Whistle Pig Rye? My buddy raves about it. His favorite.

My wife's uncle is a part owner of High West Distillery in Utah. I saw him over the Holidays and tasted from their lineup, including some of their vodka (pretty good, even though I'm not a vodka drinker). They make some interesting blends. Of course the Rendezvous Rye is what they're known for and it's delicious - a blend of 2 different ryes. 'Campfire' is a blend of bourbon, rye, and single malt scotch. Which sounded to me like a marketing ploy to placate both scotch and bourbon drinkers but it was actually pretty good. Worth a try if you want to something different. They had an oat whiskey which was unique. Very light. And a 21 year old rye which was surprisingly smooth.

golfballs, you ever had Michter's? Apparently it was a distillery that went out of business, but is now back in operation.

I work for a distributor in Middle TN and we started putting out a bourbon called Western Honey Pepper. If you happen to run up on some and want to try something unique, give this a shot. No one has tried it and not liked it. Smooth, sweet taste with a hint of chili pepper. Just thought I would share. It maybe pretty hard to find thou.

I'd like to try their 10 year old rye. It's supposed to be very good, but it's pricey. I've just had their standard single barrel rye. If you like rye you might not care for it as much as some others because I don't think it's as bold (not aged as long as the 10year). I like it because it's a little sweeter than some ryes. But I think there are better ones for the money.

I wasn't familiar with their history so I looked them up. It looks like a similar situation to Pappy. Made great whiskey, went out of business, another distiller bought the name. Same name, different whiskey. Made by the same people who distill Willett, Noah's Mill, Rowan's Creek.

To each their own. I prefer Maker's, Gentleman Jack, Knob Creek, and Woodford Reserve equally well.

If anyone here likes old fashioneds, try it with fee brothers whiskey barrel-aged bitters. Really, use it in any recipe that calls for bitters. I'm hooked on the stuff
