Better Call Saul

I wonder if Saul and Gus will ever have a face to face business meeting other than the one brief non business encounter a couple of seasons ago. I don’t think one occurred in BB. I certainly would like to see it. It would be an interesting scene IMO.
Remember that it was Saul who tipped Walt off on Gus's existence...without naming names. Told him that he had one shot at doing business with him. That suggests familiarity so maybe not face to face but definitely on each other's contact list.

Yes, I’m sure Gus knows of Jimmy/Saul due to Mike and Nacho involving Saul to be the attorney for Lalo. Not sure how much Saul knows of Gus at this time but apparently he is aware of him some because of his trip to the chicken restaurant and encountering Gus. In breaking bad , Saul always stated “ I know a guy who knows a guy” referring to Mike I guess.

So something that has sent me down a little bit of a rabbit hole...

Gus's Spanish sucks. He speaks it like an American who studied abroad for a year. Is this intentional or is this just the best Esposito can do? I remember he's supposedly Chilean-American, but I believe we know he moved to America at some point, so it wouldn't make sense that he grew up in an English-speaking house and thus never learned Spanish that well. So little is known about his past, is he actually from Chile? And if not, why would he pick that lie if he can't speak Spanish that well? IDK. Probably just the best that Esposito can do, but you never know with Gilligan. So much that seems accidental turns out to be intentional.

Bob Odenkirk is just too old to convince me he was playing a 42 year old Saul when he will turn 60 this year and Gus is too old as well the only one who aged well was Mike but this is what happens when you do prequels a decade after the original show ended.

Wasn't Esposito in Maximum Overdrive? A non speaking, short lived role?

Yea his Spanish is not great at all. You might be on to something though maybe he was never from Chile. I remember the DA and other people seemed to question where he really came from in BA especially Hank.

He could be Chilean descent and grew up in Europe or something like that. Never know. Could be a cool reveal in there somewhere. I like how the best shows and movies have all this stuff sketched out, even though a fraction of it makes it to the audience.

Yea it’s really cool how they plot everything and all the hidden and intricate details in this show.

Mike looks like he’s 90 years old, sort of a grandpa superhero.

Hot take: Jonathan Banks is the GOAT at playing capo

He was right-hand man to Victor Maitland in Beverly Hills Cop...literally the first time I remember thinking a bad guy was cool.

Then Mike in BB and reprising the role in BCS. One of my favorite TV characters ever in two of the best shows ever.

Pretty good resume. Better than Clemenza. Better than Chris (The Wire). Maybe it's a tight race with the recently deceased Tony Sirico (Paulie Walnuts).

As a CHARACTER Paulie was a good earner and (mostly) got the job done, but as an efficient tasked he paled in comparison to your other examples. There was no Russian fiasco with Mike, Clemenza or Chris. Paulie had some clown factor going on.

I'm just talking about from the perspective of the audience, not the perspective of the boss.

That's how I viewed them. Paulie could flub a situation. Don't remember that from any of the other 3.

I mean from an acting/performance/entertainment standpoint, not how good the writers decided to make the characters at being capo.

Have you watched the entire series?

The stories of Mike, Gus, Hector, Nacho, Lalo, Kim, Howard, Gael, ... I mean, it's much much more than a back story of Saul (which is great in its own right).
Last night I was thinking about Gus and how calculated he is. He patiently waited for years to enact his revenge upon Don Ladio.

Funny: my son is watching BB, and I just happened to sit in on that very episode right before watching the prior meeting on BCS.

Honestly, if a newbie asked, I'd probably recommend watching BCS before BB. I may re-watch the whole series now with all this knowledge.

I read an article--he said he didn't even remember filming the scenes the day he had the heart attack. He was amazing in the previous show that Butchna said was the episode-- I can't even imagine. I was thinking for sure it was this one, since he was a little more low key. Maybe his recovery explains why it was quieter for him
there was a jump in timeline after Kim left, but I had no idea that the handicapped tag date was during the time of Jesse/walt, which I read online. One or both should be showing up soon, I would guess
Handicapped placards in NM are renewed every 4 years. So if you go by the expiration on the Caddys tags, we are in 04/05. Walts cancer diagnosis was in 2007, and we didn't meet Saul until season 2 of BB. So we are still 2 or 3 years away from the BB timeline.

Trying to tie the BB and BCS timelines together.....

Krazy 8
BB - Krazy-8 is in the Pilot and is killed in S1E3 (And the Bags in the River). Walt and Jesse give a sample of their meth to K-8 (Jesse's "distributor") in the pilot.
BCS - K-8 is busted and becomes Hank's informant in S5E3, then is "back out on the street" in S5E5.

Tuco
Tuco first appearence in BB was S1E6 Crazy Handful of Nothin'.... I don't think any other BCS characters show up in BB before Tuco (except Hank, Gomez, and Krazy 8).
In BCS season 2, Tuco goes to Las Lunes & is most recently mentioned in S5E9 (Lalo says Tuco will get out of Jail in 11 months, Bad Choice Road).

So the current BCS time (at least until Howard is Point and Shot and Kims leaves ABQ) in BB must be early season 1 or before. Maybe the BCS jump ahead in time at the end of S6E9 to Saul's new digs and the LWYRUP caddy (the caddy tags expired on 11/05) makes the time jump in BB to ???

We will find out when the new prequel arrives in 2025. It will focus on Gus’s history before the BCS and BB story arcs. Esposito will be too old to play the part. Here is the actor who is the favorite to land the role. @n_huffhines

Earns a chuckle but I see the similarities. Can Jaleel White carry off the Chilean accent tho? 🤔
