Beware of the Michiganders

Say what you will about Detroit but I have neighbors from there and the are very nice people. Their children happen to some of the more educated and most polite children in my neighborhood. And for the record, not all of Memphis is as bad as some of you make it out to be. There is trash in every city/town in this country.

Glad to hear that Memphis isn't as bad as I've heard. Gonna be working there for the next 3 months starting Wednesday. Anyone know the best area to live temporarily? I'm also gonna take in a few Memphis Grizzlies games.

Having lived in both Michigan and Tennessee, Memphis is sadly a decent amount better than Detroit.

Literally the only redeeming quality of Detroit is its sports venues. Take out the sports teams, and Detroit is the undisputed worst big city in the United States.

Is Memphis a super desirable place? No. But it does have better weather, better restaurants, and a better culture. Just watch where you're going there, that's for sure!

Nice thread! I am from Detroit, MI..born and raised and VERY, very proud of it! Like the OP stated, us Michiganders ARE tough-minded people! lol I love the fact that our staff is mostly comprised of Michiganders..bring a nice new refreshing culture to our program. I Have cousins that graduated from Central Michigan Univerity and they tell me great things about him. They honestly cant believe hes at UT lol

Im back living in Detroit, and I dread this Winter! Lived in Knoxville for the past 9 years, was spoiled. No Red Wings, my Lions stink, my other school (MSU) stunk...going to be a looooooong offseason.

The back bone of the UT staff is from Michigan.
Life is tough in Michigan. It produces some of the nicest people because they have to have a community spirit and dedication to family just to get through winter. They also have to be tough, real tough. As to how it relates to coaches from MI, i give you Schembechler and Izzo as examples. After digging for some info on our staff and coach, i believe that he/they will bring this toughness and relentlessness to UT. CBJ is known to a be a very, very tough, disciplined coach. There will be no coddling or prima donnas here and attrition will be a short term problem. As a further prediction when we start to win again, it will often be in the 4th quarter. Finally, CBJ will be one of the nicest, most personable men while he is stepping on our opponents neck.

Neither one is from "Michigan". Schembechler is from Ohio, and specifically the home of the best fried chicken on the planet (Barberton). Izzo is a Yooper, from the only county that wasn't settled mostly by Finns. You have to be either tough or insane to actually settle in the UP, maybe a bit of both.

Mine too, she hates to lose more than any woman I've ever known. I didn't realize it until I married one, but certain areas of Michigan are surprisingly redneck.

Michigan: Cleveland in the cities, Alabama outside of them

Also, Michigan is pretty dumpy, but not as bad as Ohio, especially northeast Ohio. I lived in Cleveland for 8 years and I can honestly say I would rather live in Arkansas or Louisiana.

You shut your whore mouth.:machgun:

Memphis a better city than Detroit?! HA! Dont make me laugh! Detroit blows away Memphis. Detroit was/still is a top 10 market with yes, great sports tradition. But, you also tend to forget the history, the architecture, significant companies, the THREE casinos, etc. Yes, Detroit is the pitts in a lot of ways, and its a shame. Has so much potential but its been run into the ground by Kwame Kilpatrick and the rest of the corrupt thugs that run our once proud city. Memphis, no doubt, is a great town. But, in no way does it compare to Detroit. Well, one thing that is the same is the crime rate lol

Detroit is a ran-down nasty azz hell hole. Yes it was once the pride of American automobiles. Now it's the highest crime and unemployment rate in the US. So, don't come down here and tell us how great it is up there. Just go back if you like it so well. First marry another Yankee and take them with you

A little militant are we? I was born in Michigan, and there are a fair share of liberal retards up there---fair enough. However, the state was a middle class haven and the reason we beat the Nazis and Japanese with the way all the auto industry was re-tooled to create tanks, planes, etc. Michigan is heading in the right direction, with ditching the unions. Wisconsin is the real liberal **** tard state. And Minnesota. Michigan folk are generally pretty nice from my experiences there. I was born in Flint. An All-American city that is now down in the dumps thanks to liberal idiocy. We're on the way back.

If anyone ever says anything bad about Tennessee or the South, I'm the first to step in. Michigan isn't as bad as New Jersey or Massoftwo****s though...or Connecticut. That's where the real dip ****s live.

A Michigan fan stuck his butt out of his van and mooned us when we played them in the bowl game in Orlando.Glad we whipped their butt. Real class Michigan

That is one thing you would never accuse a Michigan fan of having...

They were seriously the WORST team to host as their fans come out of the cracks and are the most arrogant, obnoxious, and loud fan base ever. They pick fights any chance they get and just make the whole day unbearable. MSU was better, although it was always fun kicking Saban's butt every single time he came to town :dance2:

I live next to the river downtown in an upper scale condo building and I love it. My only complaint is the freaking train noise. I'm literally walking distance to the forum, the train station and the river. Beautiful views, almost no street noise, and if u are concerned about crime I could throw a rock and hit a police station. Check out the south main area, south bluffs, harbor town, or for a more suburban atmosphere Germantown, East memphis (near kirby and poplar, along or just off of walnut grove), central gardens or near Rhodes College in midtown, or for a more rural setting but still plenty of neighborhoods and a bit more of a commute u could look in Lakeland, Arlington, Collierville, Olive Branch (OB is in MS which has a state income tax) and Eads. STAY AWAY FROM Whitehaven, Hickory Hill, Raleigh, Frasier most of Cordova, Bartlett and Millington. Id also be weary of most of Summer Ave., Winchester, Shelby Drive, Elvis Presley Blvd., and steer clear of Lamar Ave., Orange Mound, and near the U of M. Some areas around Shelby Farms are nice as well.

There are plenty more of the bad and good areas i could mention but hopefully this helps Ur search a bit. Good luck with ur job and welcome to Memphis! The Grizzlies at the forum are an experience for sure and they are playing great so far this year, I know u will have a good time there.

Go Vols!

I stopped reading at the "Detroit a top ten market" part. I lived in Northville for 4 years, 20 minutes away from Detroit. The market SUCKS. My entire family history can be traced back to Michigan. There used to be a time when Michigan was an awesome place, hence why my grandparents immigrated to Detroit in search of a better life. But now, Detroit is a shadow of its former self: a decrepit, crime-filled hellhole destroyed by the diehard ignorant union mentality.

For Midwesterners (original Big Ten country, or if you prefer, the Northwest Territory areas), the order is as follows: state, sub-region, region, country. In my case, I'm an Ohioan, then a Midwesterner, then an American...I'm not a Yankee, I'm an Ohioan.

Now, if you don't like being told what to do, tell your own native sons (Fulmer and Dooley) to do a better job. Put Kiffin in there too...born in Minnesota, but mostly raised in Arkansas and North Carolina.

You know there is a big difference between a northern born person living in the south and a Yankee who moved down here and constantly talks about how much better it is up North like he was forced to move here. All I am saying is if you like Detroit so much better and if you think you are so superior, then go back! It's simple, take your Yankee loving axes back!

I love Detroit..have family in West Bloomfield and i always have to go to Detroit and play some Poker :)

It's an awesome town still one of the top 30 companies in the US resides right around there at Quicken.

Berkley is a nice place too...but you're getting in State territory there. Luckily when i was there, Iowa **** all over state and it was pretty humrous. I did find a nice bar that had a lot of UT stuff there to catch the UT and USCe game a few years back. It's called 24/7 if anyone is ever around that area.

This argument will never die. The Memphis argument always somehow gets discussed when the original discussion had nothing to do with it. I could make a remark about East Knoxville, but I won't. I am not making Memphis out to be all rosy, but people are too ignorant to understand that every big city has good and bad parts. I was raised in a suburb of Memphis and now raise my own there, and I couldn't be happier.

As a Tennessee vol who lives in Michigan all I hear about is how they beat us in basketball a couple years ago and how Charles Woodson is the best defensive player of all time.
