Beware of the Michiganders

I live next to the river downtown in an upper scale condo building and I love it. My only complaint is the freaking train noise. I'm literally walking distance to the forum, the train station and the river. Beautiful views, almost no street noise, and if u are concerned about crime I could throw a rock and hit a police station. Check out the south main area, south bluffs, harbor town, or for a more suburban atmosphere Germantown, East memphis (near kirby and poplar, along or just off of walnut grove), central gardens or near Rhodes College in midtown, or for a more rural setting but still plenty of neighborhoods and a bit more of a commute u could look in Lakeland, Arlington, Collierville, Olive Branch (OB is in MS which has a state income tax) and Eads. STAY AWAY FROM Whitehaven, Hickory Hill, Raleigh, Frasier most of Cordova, Bartlett and Millington. Id also be weary of most of Summer Ave., Winchester, Shelby Drive, Elvis Presley Blvd., and steer clear of Lamar Ave., Orange Mound, and near the U of M. Some areas around Shelby Farms are nice as well.

There are plenty more of the bad and good areas i could mention but hopefully this helps Ur search a bit. Good luck with ur job and welcome to Memphis! The Grizzlies at the forum are an experience for sure and they are playing great so far this year, I know u will have a good time there.

Go Vols!

Very good synopsis. If he is only staying for 3 months, though, he has some limitations. Depends on if he is young and or single and wants to enjoy the downtown life or wants the suburban life. But, he will be limited to certain apartments for a 3 month period. However, please enjoy the Grizzlies- great atmosphere and venue, especially against a top team.

For Midwesterners (original Big Ten country, or if you prefer, the Northwest Territory areas), the order is as follows: state, sub-region, region, country. In my case, I'm an Ohioan, then a Midwesterner, then an American...I'm not a Yankee, I'm an Ohioan.

Now, if you don't like being told what to do, tell your own native sons (Fulmer and Dooley) to do a better job. Put Kiffin in there too...born in Minnesota, but mostly raised in Arkansas and North Carolina.

See there it is again. Some dumb azz Yankee moving down here telling us how to do it. Remember one thing SEC RULES. Go Home or STF up!

Thirty years ago Detroit was a hell hole, now it is a waste land that Mad Max would move out of. Been to Detroit many times and it sux, worst city ever. If anybody says any different they are lying.

Detroit is a ran-down nasty azz hell hole. Yes it was once the pride of American automobiles. Now it's the highest crime and unemployment rate in the US. So, don't come down here and tell us how great it is up there. Just go back if you like it so well. First marry another Yankee and take them with you

Wow, what an intelligent comment. How many times have you been to Detroit? And when? I lived in Knoxville for 10 years and moved here for school. I haven't regretted it one bit. Some of my favorite bars and restaurants are downtown. I've made some really good friends and I've found the people here pretty friendly. Aside from winter weather, I have no complaints about living here. Seems like a lot of people on here are just regurgitating facts they gleamed from a news article about the plight of middle America. Yes Detroit has crime. What city doesn't? Do me a favor and come visit Detroit and see the "nasty azz hell hole" for yourself before you make all these generalizations. But I'm sure you won't because you actually might learn something.

I love Detroit..have family in West Bloomfield and i always have to go to Detroit and play some Poker :)

It's an awesome town still one of the top 30 companies in the US resides right around there at Quicken.

Berkley is a nice place too...but you're getting in State territory there. Luckily when i was there, Iowa **** all over state and it was pretty humrous. I did find a nice bar that had a lot of UT stuff there to catch the UT and USCe game a few years back. It's called 24/7 if anyone is ever around that area.

I live in right near the West Bloomfield area. Metro Detroit is actually really nice, specifically the Birmingham/Bloomfield area. The owner of quicken is literally buying detroit building by building. If he continues doing what he's doing the city will start coming back.

That's probably the nicest area of metro Detroit. Wish we could afford to live there. We live in the Royal Oak area and love it here. It's sad to see people on here rag on Detroit, when they clearly have never been here or anywhere else in Michigan. Painted Rocks, Mackinaw island, beaches on lake Michigan, any of the lakes up north. My advice to these people is to get out more and see more of your country.

Thats the problem with all these Detroit/MI haters..they dont realize and know of the Birminghams, the Novi's, the Farmington Hills (where I am from and live), the Northvilles, the Troys, the Rochesters, the Royal Oaks, Ferdales, the UP, etc...all they ever hear and know of is Kid Rock, Eminem and 8 mile..and reality shows like Hardcore Pawn lol No wonder Detroit gets such a bad rap!!

To the guy that says we like to move down there from the North and tell you how much better the North is is ridiculous! lol Dude, my Mom and her side of the family are from Knoxville. Ive visited the area since I was a kid and loved the Vols..hence I attended and graduated from there. I take pride in being a Yankee, but also take pride in having some southern roots. I love TN and will always consider it my other home. The North and South are just different worlds..thats the reality. No ones better than the other. Its based on pure perception of the individual. You shouldnt assume so much bro.

HONOR THY VOLS...CHERISH THEM...

Hey UTVol53, hidy hoo neighbor! lol Im in Farmington Hills...went to Harrison HS waaaay back in the day. Yeah, these fools have no clue about Oakland Co and the rest of the metro Detroit area lol Ignorant! I see you're a Sparty fan too..nice! I went there my first 2 years of college before I transferred and graduated from UT. GO STATE!!

HONOR THY VOLS...CHERISH THEM...

Its going to be a looooooong Winter with no Lions playoffs, No Red Wing hockey and a horrible Pistons squad. Our sporting teams have seen better days lol

I graduated from Seaholm and about to graduate from UT. Played Harrison in football and got our butts kicked both times. Talk about a dynasty there. You are right about both places being amazing, but extremely different. I love both areas and will probably try and stay in the south when I graduate, but won't be disappointed if I have to come home.

You know there is a big difference between a northern born person living in the south and a Yankee who moved down here and constantly talks about how much better it is up North like he was forced to move here. All I am saying is if you like Detroit so much better and if you think you are so superior, then go back! It's simple, take your Yankee loving axes back!

See there it is again. Some dumb azz Yankee moving down here telling us how to do it. Remember one thing SEC RULES. Go Home or STF up!

Well, those are almost coherent thoughts.

Don't give up; you'll eventually get there!

I went with the wife up to visit family in South Lyon for Thanksgiving this year. When we left, I decided to go down Beck Rd. to pick up M-14 rather than picking up 96 directly. So we go from this nice area through a nice area, and I'm pointing out as much as I can (schools, developments, Maybury State Park, etc.). She finally asked what my point was.

I said, "Because when Eight Mile came out, the next trip up here (with my brother) involved driving on 96 and seeing a bunch of cars pulled over with these dumbasses taking pictures of the 8 Mile Rd. sign. You just saw how 8 Mile Rd. looks around this area, but apparently everyone thinks that this is all ghetto or something." She then made a sound that I think meant, "Wake me when we get home."

The back bone of the UT staff is from Michigan.
Life is tough in Michigan. It produces some of the nicest people because they have to have a community spirit and dedication to family just to get through winter. They also have to be tough, real tough. As to how it relates to coaches from MI, i give you Schembechler and Izzo as examples. After digging for some info on our staff and coach, i believe that he/they will bring this toughness and relentlessness to UT. CBJ is known to a be a very, very tough, disciplined coach. There will be no coddling or prima donnas here and attrition will be a short term problem. As a further prediction when we start to win again, it will often be in the 4th quarter. Finally, CBJ will be one of the nicest, most personable men while he is stepping on our opponents neck.

OP has never been to the D or Flint Town.

Well the Tigers did go to the world series. But yea, the pistons are a joke. The lions could be good but they're extremely undisciplined and they have no secondary to speak of (sound familiar Vol fans?) And it really sucks that there won't be a hockey season my last year of living here.

Are you saying that there are no nice people in Flint or Detroit? I spent most of the day downtown and met at least 3 nice people. I can't speak about Flint because I've never been (advice people on this site should take) there but I'm sure you could find 1 nice person.

We have the same name, almost. I live in the sticks of S.W. Mich. Lot of folks from Tn & Ky here. Kinda like East Tenn without hills.

Born and raised in the UP...it is truly one of God's wonderful creations...then someone built that damn bridge.

that would be awesome, but when I go home.... visit, hang out downtown, and i'll be ready to leave within 48 hrs. I'm definitely a southern girl now.

Just talked to my mom.... snowing like hell up there.... NOT FOR ME!! lol

This is a classic example of the mentality that I am pointing out. You assume I have never been to Detroit, which like most of your assumptions is wrong. You assume that I have much more to learn than you simply because of your weak mentality. I have been there and didn't like it. I live here and love it. Again, if you adore Detroit so much, take your aerogant yet ignorant azz back! I speak for the whole southern culture when I say this. Your assumptions are based on your northern mentality and as much as I would like to try, I am aware that it can not be beaten out of you. You have affirmed my generalizations about your mentality with your aerogant statements. Detroit has an unemployment rate almost twice that of any other major city in the US and a crime rate that coresponds directly to that. I am from Tennessee, graduated from UT in 95 and have traveled the entire US and abroad. Detroit reminds me of Cincinnatti, a dirty ran down crime infested **** hole. Now, you may not agree or admit that you agree; however, you too live here. Therefore, your actions say a lot. I expect another comment about my lack of intelligence especially when compared with your superior intellect and what is sad is the fact that you actually believe that.
