I call it the dumbing down of the word
But, what ever gets people reading and deciding to believe, is not all bad. I think that once the person, that reads these modern translations, as they grow in thier faith, will move to more true to the original text passages.

yeah, i thought about that too. there is a verse that says if someone just proclaim the word of God, then He'll do the rest. i forget where it is.

Can you believe in evolution and be a christian?

I believe there is some truth to evolution but I do not believe creatures came from some "sludge" then evolved to what we see today and in the fossil record. That would amount to a tornado going through a junkyard and leaving a fully functioning car in it's wake. I believe God framed this vastness we are a small part of and gave it basic properties and rules. Over time organisms may have changed some according to these rules but only through his design.

the Bible was pretty clear on creation. the Bible talks about people who lived before the flood and described them as giants. i know that ax heads have been found that weighed 30-40 lbs this would give creed that there were men that could be considered as giants. i don't know if dinasaurs existed, if they did, they weren't spared before the flood.

i disagree about the Bible being Fallible. Why would God inspire the writers of the Bible to make mistakes. the same God who created the universe and designed Human DNA should be able to inspire men to write a book that is perfect in his eyes. i understand what you're saying about the translations. it is complicated to translate the Bible from it's original text, but i think God wanted it to be tough enough to make Christians study and learn about the Bible.

I don't believe that God inspired the writers to make mistakes, but due to the fact that humans are not perfect I don't think we would have been capable of writing a perfect book. There are several incidents of contradiction in the Tanakh and NT that give me my belief. Again though, I don't think any of the mistakes made in the Bible have any effect on the spiritual meaning of the Bible. Also, if you look at books that did not make the Tanakh or the NT, how is man perfect enough to know which books were truly God inspired and which books weren't? The books of the Old Testament Apocrypha provide some very interesting reading to put it lightly. If these books were truly inspired by God, wouldn't we know which books make up the Biblical canon immediately and not have to hold the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD?

Okay...so when I got home last night and was having my devotion...God made me realize that I didn't handle yesterday very well at all! Please accept my apology!

That is deep...and very true, but I can see many eyes glazing over reading this.

probably so, but it's not that big of a deal, because like i said, the possible problems with the writing of the Bible do absolutely nothing to tarnish the overall meaning of either testament or the book as a whole.

T-TownVol...what do you think about the Jews?

The Jews ARE God's chosen people. I believe that America has been so richly blessed because we support them in thier struggles. The conflicts for them will always be there because God tells us they will be at odds all the way back to Jacob and his big brother Esau.

As far as the salvation of the Jews, Jesus makes it very clear that just being born a Jew will not get you into Heaven. The Jew MUST profess Faith just like the rest of us. (I get blasted by the Mods when I give scripture refenences, so if you want them you can PM me.)

True That!

in accordance with Christian doctrine, I would say you are correct.

Okay...I just wanted to make sure that I was right earlier...:)

Please do not take what I say as anything more that one Christians understanding of the word. (I know that I am telling you something that you already know)

Everyone must read and decide for themselves.

What do you guys believe about the placement of Elders and Deacons in the Church?

Is it OK for the Pastors to also be the Elders, or do they need to be "non employed" members of the Church.

Thoughts?

Since I dove headfirst into one of the topics, I decided to go back and read the other posts and I have a question.

For those of you that profess to be Christians, what document(s) have you found that show there is another way for salvation other than professing faith in Jesus? Also where is this idea that being sort of good or really good gets you into Heaven?

Based on my understanding of the Bible, if you believe with your heart that Jesus is the son and died on the cross for your sins, you will enter the gates of Heaven, regardless of your life on earth. If you don't accept Jesus as your Savior you will not enter the gates.

So are you saying you believe in MICRO evolution? I think I agree with that. I remember talking about Mircro vs Macro in one of my bible classes and I believe Mircro evolution are just the natural changes and adaptations of nature and humans.

I think there should be non employed members of the church as the elders. My dad has been a deacon for idk how long. I'd say most of my life. He's not employed there. I think when you have just employed members as elders is when most of the problems arrive.

Yes...I know and that is why I asked you! :)

I think that the Pastor should not be an elder. He is the Pastor and that is it. When a Pastor gets involved with the business of a Church problems arise.

My dad has been a deacon ever since I was little. I believe that they should be non-employees of the Church.

You have it nailed. It took me 35 years to wrap my mind around the fact that it is that easy. I was brought up being taught that God has a "scoreboard" in Heaven. If you did not score enough points, deeds, or you did not ask forgiveness daily, you would not get in.

I do not believe that there are any other documents that give a true way of Salvation.

But the Hebrew meaning of the word Elder is translated as Pastor/Rabbi.
This is one of those grey areas that do not effect salvation, but a source of many Church's splitting.
I agree that the Elders should not be the Pastors.

i think if it is God's will then there may micro evolution but i don't think it is because the Bible says that God is in control of everything and nothing happens outside of his will. i think that when he initially created the earth he took every minute detail in consideration right down to the protein change in our DNA. his design was 100% flawless.
