Biggest bust of the year?

he will turn them into a 8-4 team immediately. they wont challenge for the pac-10. it should also be noted that ASU has recently implement a very erickson unfriendly academic plan. He's not going to have the free hand he had at Miami or OSU.

Not sold on Erickson, because he won with Jimmy Johnson's players at Miami.

1. They're not going to lose 4 games this year.
2. That "academic reform" talk is pure window dressing. Erickson and Herb Sendek have both been assured they'll have no problems getting the players they need admitted.

Cal OL >>> ASU OL in 2006

Cal WR >>>> ASU WR in 2006

Don't forget Carpenter's 2005 season.

carpenter's 05 season came against the worst pass defenses in div-1a. This happens every year. I have no doubt ASU will be highly rated going into the cal game. They were highly rated in 06, 04, and 03 and cal destroyed them. But I agree with hat, erickson is better than koetter. Though koetter was a very good OC.

You're missing the biggest factor. Dennis Erickson>>>>>>>>>>Dirk Koetter.

I don't think there are enough greater than symbols that could express the jump from Koetter to Erickson. Koetter's handling of the QB situation pre-2006 season was a perfect example of why he was one of the worst BCS coaches.

He was pretty impressive at OSU but didnt he get fired from there a few years later? I don't if he's still got the fire.

1. only because their schedule is a joke

2. hard to say. i'm told they've already turned down a couple JC recruits that erickson wanted.

I'm sorry! I forgot his stint at OSU. Great point!
I also vividly remember him bringing Washington State into Knoxville in '88 and hanging 52 on us. That team also beat a #1 ranked UCLA team on the road that had a pretty fair QB named Troy Aikman.

Right, because Longshore had his stats against Tennessee, USC, and Arizona.

He didn't get fired at Oregon State. He left to coach the 49ers. Erickson is one of the 10 most competitive coaches in D-I football. The last thing Arizona State will have to worry about is his intensity.

BTW, yes, Carpenter has a sloooow release, slower than Longshore. That doesn't negate that Longshore has a slow release, as well as inconsistency in the release. Sometimes it looks good, sometimes he drops to the hip, sometimes he taps the ball, sometimes he taps then drops.

Erickson at ASU is similar to Saban at Alabama. Both will bring at least 2 more wins THIS season to the table, and their opponents' fans don't want to admit it.

There's a huge difference between players you want and players you need.

Also, I guarantee Miami's admissions policies then were a hell of a lot tougher than anything Arizona State would consider implementing.

I wouldn't go that far either. I wouldn't be surprised to see them in New Orleans come January.

I don't know if they are over the USC game. I think the Big 10 is water down somewhat this year, because Michigan lost a lot on Defense and they are picked to win the Big 10. I know they have Henne,Hart and Manningham, but the lack of a defense will prove costly for them in the Big10. I think Michigan loses to Wisconsin and OSU. Yeah, they will get to BCS bowl game, but not New Orleans.

without houshmanzada and johnson that OSU team goes from elite to just pretty good. Both were questionable admits that wouldn't be admitted at ASU if they stick to their supposed new academic philosophy.

The Big 10 will be better in 2007 than they were in 2006. Mostly because Iowa, Illinois, and Penn State are going to improve.

Arizona State didn't hire Dennis Erickson to play in the Poinsetta Bowl. He'll pick his fights wisely and get the impact guys he needs. The administration can point to the guys they don't admit and claim they're reformers. Everybody wins.
