Biggest bust of the year?

BTW, yes, Carpenter has a sloooow release, slower than Longshore. That doesn't negate that Longshore has a slow release, as well as inconsistency in the release. Sometimes it looks good, sometimes he drops to the hip, sometimes he taps the ball, sometimes he taps then drops.

I don't know that it can get worse than Carpenter's though. That has to be the ugliest release in college football.

Also, I guarantee Miami's admissions policies then were a hell of a lot tougher than anything Arizona State would consider implementing.

Certainly true for the last 40 years of ASU football. They claim they are cracking down and there has been some serious pressure from the university and alumns to do so. It remains to be seen whether that is bs or not.

The Big 10 will be better in 2007 than they were in 2006. Mostly because Iowa, Illinois, and Penn State are going to improve.
If a competent coach were handling the games in Champaign-Urbana, I'd pick the Illini to win 8 games. Also, Indiana is going to be better.

Yeah, Illinois likes Zook right now because he's bringing in talent. They'll go 6-6 or 5-7 this year, and they won't compete in any of the BIG games.

In 2009, they'll fire Zook, bring in a good young COACH, and they'll make some noise with his talent.

Alums like to win football games. They're not paying Dennis Erickson seven figures to organize the debate club.

When you hire Dennis Erickson, you're basically saying "We want to win, what do we need to do to make it happen?"

And Erickson says, "Stay out of the way."

Saying Longshore is vastly superior to Carpenter is just plain wrong, man. I'm sorry.

Carpenter has similar raw skills to longshore, though I still argue Longshore is more talented. Tedford is unquestionably a better qb coach than anyone on ASU's staff. Therein lies the difference.

But yet, Longshore hasn't been even nominally superior to Carpenter. They are on the same level.

Exactly. He's been around the course. He'll let the nerdy little academicians get some victories. Then, when it matters, he'll exercise his clout and get the players he needs to win.

Tedford is a good QB coach out there, but Erickson/Olson is not unquestionably below him. It's close.

Time will tell I guess, but by and large carpenter's numbers have come against inferior competition. Nate had fantastic games against OSU, ASU, Oregon, UCLA, and Texas A&M. Not juggernauts certainly, but look at carpenters numbers against the same teams (sans A&M of course).

I'm sure you are right. I have a bunch of buddies who are big time donors for ASU and they all say that the current administration wont let erickson recruit like he did at OSU. But as you said, why hire the man if that is what you want?

edit: well it's been fun gents. i'm on vacation the rest of the week, so see ya soon.

For biggest bust, I'd have to go with UCLA. I don't think their coaches are any good, and I don't think their talent is that great either.

Florida and Texas won't make the top ten though in the end.

UCLA won't be a bust, they'll simply be bad. They beat SC on a day the Trojans were absolutely wretched on offense. They were 5-7 in their other twelve games. Why is it a good thing to have a bunch of starters returning from a bad team? Karl Dorrell will be lucky if he has a job at the end of the season.

UCLA fans want him to win the P10 or get fired. I asked the main UCLA blogger about a 2nd place finish, and he said if Bob Toledo was fired for his achievements, Dorrell should be fired for worse achievements.

Man, I still need to do that other header. i forgot completely about it and don't have the link. PM it to me.

I'll take last year's BCS National Championship schools for 800 Alex. UF and OSU.

I'll throw out UCLA as well. They aren't ranked that high, but there has been a good bit of chatter about them being a sleeper. Sleepwalking is more like it.
