Billy Donovan to Magic . . . and back? (merged)

You're compairing the free enterprise nature of the NBA with NCAA which, while out to earn a profit, operates with MUCH more restrictions, self imposed and otherwise.

Put it this way. Supply and demand comparisons are unfair when evaulating college sports and their ticket prices. Otherwise Vols season tickets wouldnt be 300 bucks a piece. They'd be 1000 a piece, because they know you guys would pay that much and more. No?
You have to give a $1,000 donation on top of paying for the actual tickets to get seats at Neyland. What's your point?

I never compared the college game to the pro game. Only stated that the vast majority of sports fans find the NBA uninteresting at best. Care to point me to the NBA subforum on this board?
Gee, a UT sports board. Yeah, I'm stunned that there aren't a bunch of NBA fans around here. A good portion of the Tennessee fan base doesn't know if a basketball is inflated or stuffed.

I would like to see any self imposed restriction UT has ever instituted that limits their ability to make money.

Ah yes, it is a UT board only. Thus the racing subforum, NFL subforum, MLB subforum, Politics forum. Good try, but not quite accurate. More like a vast amount of sports fans have zero interest in that league.

Inhabited by UT sports fans. How many people from Chicago, Cleveleland, or New York show up here just to talk politics or baseball?

UT sports fans are sports fans nonetheless. Hence they discuss NFL, MLB, and racing on a scale that deserves subforums. But the NBA seems to not merit this.

Yeah, I've noticed when I go to Chicago in the winter that nobody is wearing Bulls gear. I never see a Dwayne Wade jersey here in South Florida. When I was in San Antonio for the Sweet 16, all of those Tim Duncan and Tony Parker jerseys were obviously mirages. I also can't ever remember hearing about the Knicks when I lived in New York. Yeah, you're right.

Hmm..sounds like the hip hop fashion style is doing well. Not sure how that is translating in the TV ratings or care for the game among the vast majority of sports fans.

Yet, a major broadcast network will be showing the Finals. How does that compare to say, women's basketball? Look at NBA revenues. The L is doing just fine. Show me a major sport, other than MMA, that hasn't lost viewership in the last 10 years.

Not sure I ever compared the NBA to women's basketball. In fact I know I didn't. As for the major network broadcast, the NHL has NBC, so really not that impressed by it.

An hour south of Nashville, but I spend every weekday in the heart of Nashville.
Yes, a real NBA hotbed. How long have they had a team now? Live in a real city, with real professional sports, for a while and you'll see the NBA issue quite differently.

I really don't feel like googling stats. But please. You cannot be serious about denying the overall dramatic ratings slide for the nba since the milennium change. You just can't be.

I doubt Hat would dispute that, but the point is that from a regional perspective, there's not much to get excited about NBA-wise if you live in middle TN; especially when the Grizzlies, Hawks and Bobcats aren't offering much. Further, I highly doubt the NBA was ever very big in that area even when the NBA was in it's heyday in the late 80s and early 90s.

Again with the NBA "city thing". So there is a forcefield around cities that allows them to enjoy the NBA and living in a city makes a person a credible sports fan? Funny when I travel through any small town I see NFL and MLB paraphanelia, wonder what their secret is.

And to reply to your statement, no I wouldn't. I don't get dragged into liking sports solely because they have a medicore following.

And they treasured it so much, they sent it to versus for overtime. I wonder if that would ever happen to the NBA?

God would surely not torture us to the point of allowing one of those games to go into overtime.

Didn't COACH K @ Duke do the same thing with the Lakers?

The MLB also has ratings slides. I'm in the TV industry, and basically, all network ratings have been sliding over the last decade due to more choices on cable and satellite, as well as the huge move to the internet. The NBA is in a little bit of a transitional phase, but I live 2 hours north of Phoenix, and the NBA is huge huge huge.

I would hardly call the NBA "real professional sports." The NBA is so pathetic. A bunch of overpaid gangsters and drug dealers that don't even try until the playoffs.
