Biopsy's airline gripe thread

I saw something on this that basically anyone can get a service dog designation. There’s little to no oversight or standards, there’s lots of websites that you pay a fee and get a certificate and vest. People are doing it because they don’t want their dogs in cargo on a plane, or they want to ignore all the no dog areas around town. I’ve seen several at the farmers market and it’s clearly what’s going on.

It used to be 10-15 years ago you would only see this occasionally especially if you saw someone flying who was blind now it’s not uncommon to see 3 to 5 dogs per flight

I believe a business can request proof if someone is claiming an animal for emotional support, but not for a service dog associated with a disability?

The only way we can ask for proof is if the animal growls/barks or pisses or poops on the floor. If they were a true service animal they are extensively trained to not do that. It all comes down to it not being worth the headache or lawsuit for those people who knowingly abuse the system.

A pretty decent sized dog on my flight right now roaming the aisles without a service dog vest. The same couple was arguing about a lost credit card at the bar. And a lady just pretty much sat in my lap as she was juggling her luggage. There should be courses on how to be an airline passenger before you are able to fly the friendly skies.

If the dog is well behaved and an additional seat was purchased for the dog I don't see any problem with it. I imagine there is a rule to have the dog strapped in with a seat harness. As for a long flight I have no idea where a dog is supposed to go to relieve itself, pee pads? If you love your pet enough you probably wouldn't want it riding in the cargo hold either.

I have a problem with dogs sniffing my butt while walking down the aisle

I’ve flown cross-country twice with a cat. Not a dog. I love dogs, but we currently do cats. {{{{{ hugs }}}}} to Southwest Airlines for civilized travel with pets; $50 (maybe $75 now) if they fit under the seat.

I never tried to certify my cat as a service pet, although she would certainly qualify.

I bought a soft-side Sherpa carrier that she (mostly) fit in and squished under the seat in front of me. After take-off, and running it by seat mates (mentioning possible allergies and offering Claritin), I pulled her out and held her on my lap, while she intently looked out the window at the clouds, which apparently looked a lot like rabbits and were worthy of interest. I had bought (and used) a harness and leash, which offended her greatly, but which offered some peace of mind to everyone else.

Flight attendants came by, cocking a cautious eye, and moved on. They seemed pretty happy about the harness and leash (more than did my cat.)

You don’t have to be an azzhole to travel with a pet. Just be considerate. And no, I wouldn’t put a living critter in cargo. I like my oxygen, and I assume that pets do too.

A gate agent.. constant abuse from asshat passengers

That's a $12 an hour job, not great pay but certainly not the lowest. I think given the same job site a ticket agent probably gets it a lot worse from passengers.

Fastfood anything. People who go there for some reason think they out to be treated as royalty..

My dad worked for COMAIR at TYS back in the day and loved it. It didn’t pay great but it made him happy. This was before 9/11 and I will say he quit shortly after because the industry changed a lot.
