Leave it retired and continue to honor the lives lost that put an end to it anyways
Best way to honor them is to bring it back.. Nobody thinks of them during a game without it. And, if we play Kentucky on a cold November day, maybe it will melt some snowflakes.

YES !!!
Bring it back but instead of calling it "The Beer Barrel" (even though that is what it is) call it The Brock-Steinmetz Trophy to honor those two guys that died that fateful night.

FWIW - and hang me up if I'm wrong - if the guy driving wasn't a KY football player or one of the guys killed wasn't a football player, the trophy never gets put away. Just sayin'

I vote no. It was ended in respect and honor for some lives tragically lost. Let's not dishonor that lose.
I could see if if they drank from this particular barrel, it could be stuck in the evidence room. But dang, I mean every day at 5:00 people hit happy hour, drink a couple of Bud Lights, and most don't get killed going home.

Let's say a scuba diver was crushed by a ships anchor and he was a Vanderbilt student. Are they forced to change "Anchor Down" behavior, on account of that one accident?

UT won approx 55 of the 77 years it was active. The number of years which we retained the trophy is probably closer to 60 if you attribute ties to the previous victor. This is the real reason UK does not want to reinstate it. It was always our trophy.

UK's AD, Newton "On December 18, 1999, Newton was presented with the Annie Wittenmyer White Ribbon Award by the Women's Christian Temperance Union for refusing to allow alcohol advertising at university sporting events.[15] Newton retired on June 30, 2000.[4]"

From what Ive read about Newton, he was very anti-alcohol. Cut ties with alcohol advertisers. Had very strict anti alcohol policies for student athletes. It was a reactionary decision after a Vandy win - had nothing to do with UT.

This year Kentucky reinstates alcohol sales at Kroger field. Seems like a lot has changed since Newton left.

UK should've found a better way to memorialize the players/victims. Shame Dickey agreed to it when he did. I'm guessing he didn't have much of a choice there. Either way, this trophy is retired and officially collecting dust somewhere at UT. Maybe some players will find a way to sneak it on the field one of these years...

I disagree and feel it’s a pretty pointless argument anyways, no plus in bringing it back besides scrutiny

It's a barrel with game scores on it. Scrutiny? College football used to be a pickup game between two schools, and some traditions were sort of fun. I regard this as the equivalent of "Lord Stanley's Cup" in hockey (on a much smaller scale). Maybe Kentucky needs a form of a barrel that is like a participation trophy - both teams get a mini keg regardless of the winner. What is the point of not bringing this back? To stop college kids from drinking beer? Good luck there, especially when they sell beer in the stadium. Or lets just kill any and all tradition in college football. Make it as plastic as the NFL. There IS a plus in bringing it back. See pics below:

There have been people killed with or by an Axe.... so the Minnesota–Wisconsin Paul Bunyan Axe trophy really offends me... so i think it should be banned !!!!

....Then there is the Freemont Cannon (Nevada and UNLV), and the "Little Brown Jug" (Minnesota - Michigan).... Wow .. Minnesota is really offensive.

Oh... and there is a Stanford Axe too (Stanford and California)... im very shocked Sanford would allow an Axe anywhere near their trees!!!!!

It’s a dead tradition with no value to resurrect… so why bring it back for a bunch of old timers to relive? Regardless of what you or I might feel of the message it could send to a broader audience, it is evident via this forum that it could hold some negative opinions. All I’m saying is better left retired.

Talk about woefully out of touch. Trash take from a doubling-down goober.

Let's tear down the V O L S off the top of the stadium again. It was 'dead' and only 'old timers' cared about it. Idiocy.

Tell me again who this is harming?
