Bru McCoy Injury

Hey Doc I’m a PT..
I thought it looked like a distal complete tib/ fib fx with possible dislocation.

Do you think the fracture is Tib/ Fib? Or something less than that?

Obviously none of us know exactly without the reports..

Possibility but to me it looked like a classic dislocation (talus separation with lateral rotation from the talocrural joint—which includes the distal tib/fib at the joint but different from a “true” or clean tib/fib injury, compound or closed fx, etc…). Seeing the rotation briefly (what was shown on the broadcast) almost always will have some sort of traumatic damage to that portion of the joint /connective area where the tib/fib and talus meet during the separation (dislocation) process. That joint simply doesn’t hinge that way and is extremely unforgiving. Obviously we are/were all speculating based on previous knowledge and experiences until proven (which is how medicine works—medical professionals should all welcome being challenged and having to defend opinions), but seems cut and dry seeing it with the semi-official confirmation now what the injury is/was.

Great VN convo with this. Who would’ve thought?

Having had a comminuted femur fracture (twisting break while skiing) I can tell you that you are so full of adrenalin, that once the motion stops, the pain is tolerable. Until they field set and immobilize the leg. That hurts like a motherfugger. I was 31 when I did it, and I had a revolutionary repair. I had a steel rod thru the marrow channel of the bone installed. I still have it to this day.
I believe that's called a femoral nail. My brother had that repair as well. It's amazing how doctors can put a leg back together.

I dislocated my ankle in January with no fracture, which apparently is very rare. Ruptured ATFL, CFL and deltoid ligaments. I still can’t run a lap around the track without pain. Bru’s got a hard road ahead, but he’s probably got betters doctors than Ft Carson.

I was thinking the same thing. A fractured femur he would have been screaming. I was a vanderbilt-Tennessee game when Aaron Hayden broke his femur against Vanderbilt. He was at midfield and I was in the end zone if we could hear him screaming loudly. It was a nasty break. Hopefully the fractured dislocated ankle will heal nicely for him. GBO
Hayden broke his Tibia and Fibula.

What an uninformed and idiotic statement. You have no idea of the YEARS of work and study it takes to be able to diagnose and treat these kind of injuries. It takes extraordinary dedication and sacrifice. It’s not for the money. So whether you are injured like Bru, or you were in a car accident, or you fell off your ladder cleaning your gutters, you should be damned glad people are willing to learn how to treat it. Or maybe you could call up your local realtor and ask him if he could help you. I’m sure he’s not in it just for the money.
Sorry but there are plenty of doctors who are in it for the money. Why do you think so many doctors just live to break out that prescription pad in a blink of an eye? Just because it takes dedication and sacrifice doesn’t mean they can’t be in it for the money.

Most health care professionals I know try to tell people the way to changer their lives and fix their illness through diet and exercise. Then when the patient is too damn stupid to take the doctors advice the doctor has no choice but to put them on medication because if they dont the patient will die.

How does writing a script help a doctors bottom line?

If you don't think Drs get kickbacks from writing prescriptions for Meds, you are in a different world!

Kickbacks? You do know there are laws regarding this. I actually do “Practice Analysis” for offices and individual doctors. Even hospital departments. There isn’t a line item at all for “kickbacks.”

A doctor can be a paid speaker for a drug and some are. However, it has to be posted what his compensation it. Sunshine Act. There is zero compensation for a doctor to write an individual script. Illegal.

Doc vol and I both called it a dislocated ankle, in another thread, and were send to the stake to be burned alive. I don't know Docs background, and I'm not a doctor. I have taken in over a dozen patients as a paramedic with the same injury over my 13 year career. People saying a femur fracture don't quite understand the force it takes to break a femur, very rare for a 24 year old to break one outside of a major car accident, or more frequent motorcycle accident. Plus the pain endured from a femur fractured he quite likely wouldn't be laying there as calm as he was and waving. I had an accident and ended up with 53% 3rd degree burns I wasn't waving at anyone.
There was a bad one in MMA recently. Blew my mind when it happened. Only one I can recall seeing in MMA.

Bless you. An extended family member broke his in a T Bone Car Crash. He still walks with a limp and sometimes a cane AND he ended up in opioid addiction recovery. He's not that kind of man but the pain was beyond anything he'd known before.

I hope you're as good as possible after that kind of thing.
Thank you for that. It was a long time ago and it only gives me occasional problems but nothing unmanageable. What I wish I could do is to see Bru and let him know that it will get better. Right now, I guarantee you that he isn't feeling very well, and he might even be a little depressed, although I am sure his teammates are showing up to lift his spirits. I have sent prayers his way for a quick and complete recovery.

I feel terrible for your family member. I would think a side load break would be much much more painful than mine was because at least mine was 'contained' if that makes any sense. When it is a side load fracture like his sounds like, I can only imagine the pain there.

This x1000000. Just look at the "body positive/healthy at any size" crowd. These are the kind ob people that went nuts that Adele had the audacity to lose a whole person's worth of fat and vastly improve her health.

I hope Bru is getting messages from successful athletes who've had similar injuries for encouragement. Knowing there's potential for recovery is probably very important for him right now because I'm sure his world seems like it's collapsed.

I'm glad you're good. My family member was lucky though they had to be cut out of the vehicle, but a few more inches and the hip could've been crushed and it very possibly could've been fatal. Overall, they are blessed. I hope you are also.

Bru is no stranger to hard physical training and he will have elite strength and conditioning help all along the way. It's a long road but the road for him to get where he was at UT was not easy, I'm sure. I'll lift him up, as I know we all will.

If medical providers get kickbacks from writing prescriptions, my "kickbacks" must be going to a different world...haven't received one in 16 years of practice.

On a side note, I think it's worth acknowledging Jacob Warren in this injury. Most people's response would be to cringe and look away or signal to the sideline for help. He ran over, knelt down, put a hand on Bru, and gave him something to focus on other than his ankle until medical staff arrived. Sometimes those types of acts help the most. Warren is a great teammate.
