Bruce Pearl with another recruiting violation? Say it ain't so

Dj Cooper issued this statement today:

"No schools have directly contacted me or my family since I signed at Ohio University,'' Cooper said in a statement e-mailed to the News Sentinel from Ohio University media relations director for men's basketball Drew Wiseman.

.....
That's all he had to say? No reason for why he specifically named Pearl and says they tried to get him to leave....WTF??? I have a major issue with that.

Didn't stop a free thread to bash BP again though, so a few could care less if its true or not.

Let's see if the people that were quick to judge in here are now quick to apologize. I won't hold my breath.

That is why you never cast judgment until you've heard both sides of the story.

Any of the Pearl bashers have anything to say.

Do you have a quote without brackets when he named Pearl specifically?

That's my point the only thing that has ever come out that was a major violation was the lie itself......there has never been any proof that Bruce has ever done anything else.

.....which is what made the lie so stupid.

No but it was answering a question that named those schools.

Also, his parents claim these schools did bug now the player says no, but offered no reasoning or details on the interview and what he and his parents both said.

I said it seemed pearl was guilty, not e definitely is, but that it appeared from that interview. I still think something is a bit odd, I don't get why the interview implicating him and drew, and now an apology that offers no details on what he just said in that interview.

If this all goes away nothing will come of it, and both sides should be fine, but it's still odd. Still though, many people have that perception and stories like this don't help. Cal has the reputation he has because of stories that 99% of we're never proven, much like this case. Yet he's still considered dirty, just saying stories like these don't help, whether innocent or guilty.

I think he got caught off guard.....didn't know what to say.....lied......felt stupid about not telling the truth but it was too late then.......I just don't understand all the hate for him......he did nothing to get it in trouble.....still supports us and our current coach.....and helps out with charities in knoxville

That would make sense had he not called Craft's dad, met with the coaches, etc... to all cover it up. I was a big Pearl supporter, but anyway you look at it..... it was dumb.

I like Coach Pearl and what he did for UT basketball BUT to believe that all he did was lie about a photo is just niave. He did plenty to get fired for and plenty to get UT in trouble had they not fired him.

What all besides the lie did he do to get fired for? I haven't heard of anything that would have gotten ut in any kind of trouble?

The coaches was a split second thing that happened at the same time........crafts dad even said that pearl never asked him to lie to cover it up......I have as little faith in all of that as the bogus bump rule violation and the contacting of the Ohio player......it is all hearsay

1) Pearl knew having Craft and Selby at his house was a violation. He had committed the same violation at UW-M. Thus as a repeat offender he probably would have been punished rather harshly by the NCAA. Since UT should have been aware of the original violation they bare some responsibility in making sure it doesn't happen again.

2) Pearl told Craft's Parents that the kid being at his house was a violation and that it was up to them if they wanted to stay. I don't know the NCAA rule book by heart, but I have to think that involving the families of recruits in known recruiting violations is probably frowned apon.

3). When Pearl found out about the picture, he called Aaron Craft's father. Mr. Craft said Pearl basically reminded him they were in it together and that if Pearl went down so would Aaron. I believe this is referred to as coercion in most circles.

4) he signed an affidavit saying he had committed no known recruiting violations. See #1 for this. I know most coaches probably sign this thing every year knowing they broke some rules. However, most of them don't do it knowing they broke a rule they've already been busted for breaking once before. There has to be some plausible deniability or you are just tying your own noose.

5) he did all these things as the head coach. If he hadn't been let go, how does the University argue against lack of institutional control? So by that logic, all of these actions put UT itself at risk unless they cut ties with Pearl.

Ummm the coaches was not a split second thing. And Craft's Dad did anything but do what you just said.

Ummm the coaches thing was a split second (minute) thing. UT's lawyer showed the coaches a xerox copy of the pic that the NCAA was going to question Pearl and the rest of the coaches on only minutes before they were to meet with the NCAA. UT's lawyer had the pic for about 6 days if I remember right.

That should tell you how Pearl reacts with split second decisions. Meet with the coaches, get the story straight, and lie. Doesn't really speak well to his natural instincts to wrong-doing does it? What he did was calculated. If he did that in a split-second, then how can you trust his character?

After listening to the full explanation, sounds like CBS Sports was trying to create something from nothing. They have to be the WORST Sports coverage in the World. They aren't called the Commercial Broadcasting System for nothing.

What full explanation? All cooper said was about one sentence, no school has recruited me since I've been at Ohio. That's all he said, not really any sort of an explanation...did I miss another story?

How were they trying to create something??? Dj Cooper and his parents made those quotes, they didnt have to answer those questions. They came out and did though and whether it was true or false it was a selling story and was hot news. That reporter would be an idiot not to publish it.

As I said in the other thread, the reporter isn't the person at fault here they were doing their job. The Coopers are solely responsible and at fault for this story.

Are you serious? It's Columbia Broadcasting.

This story amounts to a he said, he said. Doubt anything comes of it or it's proven either way. It's sad that anytime Bruce opens his mouth, there's a question as to his truthfulness.

Because like you and others, jimmy dykes got on a soapbox and lambasted BP on national tv and didn't know if it was true or not.

And fwiw, most people on here have absolutely no clue the stuff that goes on in recruiting. Zero clue.
