Butch Has Enough Talent...

I think some people underestimate what we lost and how little experience the new starters on offense have. It will be hard to replace that type of production and experience. I do hope 8 wins happen though.

I think some of you all are underestimating the power of positivity (not from fans but from Butch and this staff). They have the kids believing in themselves. Dooley's BIGGEST issue, even bigger than hiring Sunseri, was that he was a defeatist.

Perhaps, but I'm gonna let it play out this time.

Well, agreed that Derek didn't get it, but I'm not so sure if Butch can take what we have and win 8. I surely hope so.

P.S. I was a die hard about CDD. It wasn't 'til the absolute horrible coaching at the end of the Missouri game last year that I finally realized that he really was in way over his head. I still cringe when I think about that game. We have a blitzcreig (sp.) offense, 40 seconds, a time out, and near mid field, and he lets the clock run out to play for OT. Should have been throwing for the sidelines and win in the last seconds with a field goal or maybe even a TD. Sheeeeshhh!!!

Seriously! Biggest dumb*** in the world for that. A middle school kid knows better than that.

We are coming off the worst defense in UT's history and installing a entirely new set of QB and WR's. Let me guess, if he doesn't win will you make a post saying he can't coach as well as you were expecting?

6 wins and a bowl game will be a great start to what I imagine will be an illustrious career for Butch.

Let's forget about all expectations and support the man. Not to steal from Dools or make excuses, but this is Year Zero all over again.

i just could not disagree more

the 3 ooc should be slam dunks

vandy is vandy and also lost some of their best players

UK is UK and are going through the same coaching transition we are - just with way less talent

Auburn went 0-8 against the SEC last year and are going through a coaching transition as well

we had MO beat and DD went to OT with them - o good coach beats them by 17 last year like we should have and then this year it isnt viewed as a tossup game

7 reg season wins is not crazy and can be done w/o beating 1 quality football team (ie not 1 team that is likely to finish year in top 40) - 8th win can come in a bowl game

That's what I'm figuring.

Bonus Prediction: We run for 300+ and hold the ball for 35 minutes vs. Oregon.

We don't win 8 this year. I'm just hoping to see fundamental ball. I have realistic expectations, especially after watching the spring game. I just hope people give Jones a bit of time, he's getting it done off the field (unlike Dooley)!

right now to win 8 games if he's as good an X/Os guys as he's appeared to be.

Derek just didn't get the complexities and relied on asst's too much.

Found any hidden superstars on the bench yet? Were just starting to catch up. The fact that Dooley sucked made our natural talent get worse. We have to first correct the bad coaching of the past. This takes awhile most of the time. We don't need to build an impossible standard.

This time last year we said DaRick & Hunter would be our offensive production and key playmakers. Hunter was a no-show at all big games and DaRick...well...moving along. We do have good talent coming in at WR (North, Harris, & Jenkins) as well as good talent returning from last year that went unheard of simply because they were playing behind Patterson and Hunter such as Croom, Pig, and Bowles. WR is not a problem here, you think that it is simply because we don't know who is going to be our go to guy with everyone looking for the next Patterson (which won't happen).

I would have said 7 wins, and I think everyone can guess at this point where those 7 would come from. But number 8....you're talking about beating a pretty damn good team. I would say we aren't stopping Georgia (I see Georgia as the favorite in the SEC in '14). We aren't sliding past Alabama or Oregon. Based on last year, I say we beat Florida simply because they lost the most defensive playmakers, their best rusher, and their offense isn't something I think would fool CBJ. After that, we could MAYBE squeak one at against USCe but who knows. Hell, we could go 3-9.

We'll be cycling through head coaches from now till the end of the Hilary Cinton adminstration if these are the expectations of our fan base...

I don't know dude I think CBJ can turn it around with this talent. He and his assistants think as one and that's going to be the difference. DD wasn't respected by his staff nor his players. If everybody is on the same page this team may surprise alot of people. I keep hearing about these players putting in work like never before. That's saying something. I say 9 with a bowl.

It's not just about talent. His roster is marginally talented outside of the starting OL... In other areas we're very limited and/or inexperienced. And there's very little depth overall.

That being said, his task goes beyond maximizing his talent level.... he's also gotta reverse a losing culture. These kids don't know how to win yet. I'm encouraged that that's one of his strengths given his track record, changing the culture to a winning one. He'll get it done IMO, just don't know how soon.

I think 6-7 wins is a good expectation.

It COULD happen but pretty much everything will have to fall in place just right in order for that to be a reality.

1.) No injuries

2.) One of th QB's will have to emerge as "the guy" and be the concensus leader on that offense.

3.) Our WR play will have to get better...a LOT better!

4.) Defense will have to stay injury free and show a marked improvement over last year.

5.) Mistake free, fundamentally sound football.

6.) We'll need some luck and have some breaks go our way.

Realistically, I see 6-6 with (hopefully) a bowl victory.

I'll be happy with 6-6 and a bowl game. 7 wins will be a great year. 8 wins with this schedule and inexperience and we have the next General Neyland on our hands.

You can never have enough talent. The 4th quarter will let you know where you stand at any given time. Hard for me to see how Tennsessee will not start working their way up the recruiting food chain once again, regardless of record. There is no such thing as traditional powers becoming irrelevant. That's mostly wishful thinking by people with a dog in the fight. Once the right coach is in place, I suspect the bounce back ability will be highly noticeable. Of course Butch still has to prove he's the man.

As I read through several different message boards, it is obvious there are going to be many upset UT fans come December. expectations are way too high for this upcoming season with a new staff teaching another new system to kids that have done nothing for last 5 years but continue to have to learn about new coaches.

IF coach jones can get past 6 wins, maybe to 6 wins, it will be quite an accomplishment for a program that has been as bad off as this one is for that last 5 years.

Our O line should be 1 of the best in the country without question.

Nobody really knows who will or can really step up at any of the key skill positions though.

RB rotation should be fair to good but we still really don't know.

TE rotation is weak and we all hope for a breakout season by someone.

WR rotation should be fair and might become a strong point IF, and a big IF, these kids can all learn the new playbook fast enough but we know there's some good talent at the WR position.

QB is a huge question mark and nobody has proven they can be the man we really need and must have at the QB position BUT, if we have to start a true freshman at the QB position anytime this season we're definately in trouble.

Our O game might gel fast and surprise some people but I won't OVERexpect at all on that side of the ball.

Our D was the worst in over 100 years last season so there's nowhere to go but up and getting better.

The huge question is...How much better can our D really become in just 1 offseason to learn everything all new again?

Where are our huge playmakers on the D line?

Who will get serious pressure on the other teams QB and really be disruptive?

LB's should be pretty good but quality depth is still a serious issue with our LB corps.

Who will be the DB's that can really make plays, interceptions and cause fumbles for the turnovers we'll badly need in every game this year?

Far too little experienced, quality depth on the D rotation at almost every position still.

Far too many questions still to answer to expect buTch to find lightning in a bottle but on any given gameday anything can happen.

6 Wins and a Bowl Win is a decent 1st year.

7 Wins and a Bowl win is a good 1st year.

8 Wins and a Bowl Win is a great 1st season.

Anything better than that and buTch and company should get a pay raise and another year added to their contracts.

I expect to see every player knowing their assignments and playing disciplined UT football.

I expect to see every player playing Ternnessee, SEC type smashmouth, hardnosed football on every play.

I expect to see every player never quitting and never giving up until the clock runs out at the end of the 4th quarter.

I expect to see every player keeping their grades up and staying out of trouble so they will stay on our football team and available to go in and do their part to help rebuild our team back to where Tennessee football always belongs.

I expect to see Tennessee back in the fight every year for the SEC East Championship and a shot at the SEC and National Championship.

I expect year by year to see our Vols getting better and better until we're again feared by every team we play and back in the top 10 Nationally every year like Tennessee should always be.

I don't expect these things to happen fast because it's a long, tough climb back to the top in the SEC but I do expect to see us starting to make that climb back up to the top little by little every single year.

Brick by brick, player by player and play by play on the field I expect to see improvement in every area and I believe that what I expect over the next few years are all realistic for our Tennessee Vols.

Afterall, we ARE the Tennessee Vols and nothing can keep our program down forever!!!

#BrickbyBrick...VFL...GBO!!!

Very good post.

The question on UT's D talent can be answered if you can answer question: Was Sal as bad as the '12 performance or did Wilcox pull off a miracle by having the Vols mid-pack in the SEC? Which season actually reflects the talent most? Many if not most of the key players on D were around and playing as underclassmen under Wilcox.

Sal was the worst and will prove that he still is at FSU
