Butch Jones: ‘We are getting closer to naming a starting quarterback’

Jayson Swain @SwainEvent
Nathan Peterman is one of the hardest working dudes on the team and is one of the last guys to leave the practice field daily.

Jayson Swain @SwainEvent
For Peterman to truly "redeem" himself, he would have to lead his team to a SEC win. Why are "we", the media, jumping the gun

Jayson Swain @SwainEvent
He is in a close QB battle with Justin Worley and both guys have improved. Let's let him win the job and lead the team to a W first.

I love being one of the last guys to leave the practice and seeing Peterman out there working on his reads, accuracy and footwork. Love it!

Jayson Swain @SwainEvent
Your career shouldn't be defined by one GAME. I hope he redeems himself from Florida 13', but that's only going to happen during a GAME

As much as I would like Peterman to win it, Butch isn't going to give it to him blind. Whoever gets the reps with the 1s will be the starter. Simple as that.

Now, if Peterman all the sudden starts taking all the 1st team reps this week... That will be interesting.

Peterman was the only one that didn't go to a QB coach over the break. Maybe the extra practice hurt the other two.

Consider this, when your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd string QBs are battling for the starting job it normally means their talent level is closer to them all being 3rd string, not 1st. The starter will be whoever makes the fewest mistakes, not who has the best arm, footwork, or potential. This is going to be a run heavy, short quick pass team behind a questionable line.

Mmmm I don't agree. I think it has been more of an indicator of it being a new program, with a whole new staff, with an incumbent qb who has seniority, experience, but under impresses and yet still has been given every opportunity to succeed in the new system. A second qb battle being another indicator of being given every opportunity.

With the play makers we have on the team and how they performed during the spring and this fall so far, I think we have plenty of weapons to be a vertical team with big plays too.

Yep, not a good sign, IMO, when the starting quarterback can't be named 3 weeks before the opening game.

Agreed. I posted this on another thread but think it is more appropriate here. Calling it now - Peterman gets named the starter this week.

"I know that we only are seeing clips and bits - but I think of it more as an audit. A sample of the true population.

Butch's full quote from today was:

"We are getting closer to naming a starting quarterback," Jones said after Tennessee's practice Monday morning at Haslam Field. "I’m going to go back and watch the film this morning, a little bit tonight. But I expect, if things go the way they’ve been going, we’ll name a starting quarterback at some point this week."

And the media tracked a period where they pulled Peterman out to do drills on the other side of the field (yes, again, could be maintenance) but tracked Dobbs and Worley. Combined 7/17. Worley alone 2/9 in those drills. (Practice Notes and Observations: 8/11 PM | Rocky Top Insider)

All reports have been of 14 and 11's struggles this Fall. And CBJ has said numerous times, if one of them steps out and is consistent and separates themselves then they will be the starter."

If Worley was the starter, Why not name him now? I think peterman passed him.

Peterman was working on read option drills while the other QB's was throwing against air. TIFWIW.

Worley was doing the same thing a couple practices ago and posters were pointing to that as some sign that Worley wouldn't be the starter. Tifwiw.

"Hey Nate, I don't want you to be nervous or anything, but I'm benching Worley and want you to start your first game ever in the swamp. Yes, I know they probably have the best defense in the nation right now. And yes, this is, in a lot of Vol fans eyes, the team they hate the most and would sacrifice their first child to end the losing streak to. Oh, don't break your thumb or anything like that either behind our underachieving OL." - CBJ

I absolutely refuse to label him a bust because he played awful in his first / only college start. There is a reason the coaches benched Worley and started him, because he can play in the SEC. I just hope he gets his chance to redeem himself.

If he sucks *** again, I'll own up to being wrong.

:good!: THIS. First Start....Swamp....Most Over Rated O-line in the history of Tennessee Football......Injured.... Pretty good Gator Dfense..... and that my friends are the ingredients for an epic failure.

I couldn't agree more. Give the kid another shot.

Worley took the day off. He wasn't working on "read option" drills.

Peterman rejoined the 14&11 after his drills.

Worley will be the starter. If he hadn't got hurt last year it wouldn't even be a question. He got better as the year went on beating SC and basically Georgia. He would have remained starter the rest of last season and been the starter this year. Nothing has changed. He has the most experience and will be the starting QB.

Worley is your starter. If he struggles then go to Dobbs. I wouldn't let Peterman play QB for my flag football team. Put him in the spotlight last year and he crapped himself. He's a practice player. Can't produce when the lights are on and it's gametime. Not saying its a easy thing to do in the SEC but the kid just doesn't have the marbles.

He looked like the Junior High School qb against Florida. I was waiting for him to literally sh*t his pants at any moment. And shame on Butch for not seeing this kid wasn't ready before that even happened.

I think the starting job against Utah St. is going to go to Worley. Whether he starts any more games after that will be determined by his performance in that game, imo.

So good that neither Florida nor Florida State even offered him a scholarship according to Rivals.

I'm not sold. He looked pathetic.

Correct. UF showed a little interest in him, but they did NOT offer as they eventually signed a three star prospect out of Pennsylvania.

I like Peterman, and I hope that he steps up,and wins the job as UT needs him to be the MAN. If he does and can lead the Vols to wining record this season with two years of eligibility remaining, 2015 and beyond looks really bright. If it's Worley then Peterman and Dobbs are left to fight it out next season.

Hmm Peterman has a really good chance of starting. Worley and Dobbs are just being to inconsistent at this point.

Worley's problem is his ceiling. He does not, or has not displayed, an SEC caliber arm. His best deep throws were lucky in that they were so underthrown, the reciever was able to come back and make a play. That being said, in the last game Worley played, he had more zip on the ball than I had seen before. If his armstrength has improved than great. If not, he could be a huge liability by taking away the deep threat of our talented receiver core, which we will need to lean on heavily this year.
