Butch Jones on freshman QBs

Worley needs to get his confidence up. Let him throw a lot during the South Alabama game and he might actually start to get it back. It would also help the young WR's get their confidence up as well.

40+ Attempts for him next week if you really want him to be a starting QB for this team. He has got to find his groove and balance as a passer or we are going to get murdered by Georgia. I think if we can find an identity on offense between now and then we might actually have a chance against Georgia but if Worley can't get a fire in his gut and become the leader of this team, we are screwed against the good teams left on our schedule.

i like your thinking

I will still support and cheer on the vols in every game they play. But, emotionally, I'm just done with it all. It just isn't fun anymore to keep thinking they have a chance in hell of beating a decent team.

Worley in my opinion made a few really good throws and nailed some reads, but it was too far between and on balance overall just looked lost. Peterman was just comical today. He may have some physical tools, but based just on today, he has no business playing D1 football. Nothing against the guy, and the effort he gives I'm sure is genuine. I don't think he wants to lose, but it looks like he just can't get it done. I want to play in the NBA, but it just isn't going to happen.

If CBJ says the freshman aren't ready, then I think we should all defer to his judgement, he is the one that has to ultimately take responsibility, not the armchair coaches on volnation. So, that pretty much leaves us with Worley. Just got to make the best of it. I really want to believe Worley can at least get us bowl eligible this year.

Defense has got to figure out some semblance of what proper outside contain and leverage is. Other than that, I really think they played well enough to win.

Just my thoughts, which mean absolutely nothing. As always, GBO.

They aren't ready as compared to what? Worley and Peterman?

Get them ready to play, Butch. That's your ****ing job, and you are being paid well to do it.

As much as I am behind Butch Jones, and the Volunteer football team, I have to say, "WE NEED A FREAKIN QUARTERBACK!"

He gambled on Peterman in hopes of a spark to the offense. IMO

No coach worth his salt starts a guy because the legions of miserable are crying. jmo

Hell no. Butch started Peterman because Worley couldn't hit the broad side of a barn last week . Fans pissing and moaning had 0 influence on his decision .

Most ready to lose. I would rather take my lumps with a freshman than a Junior with no future.

Everyone would love to see the freshmen both be superhuman freaks of nature who lead us to four straight national championships and go on to be NFL Hall-of-Famers. But according to Butch, they aren't ready and since I haven't seen them every week in practice, I have to take his word for it.

Butch needs to play for this year and a bowl birth. It's not fair to anyone to ditch your upperclassmen unless someone beats them out.

sad but true, did you have a good time at the game ? other than the score lol

We had a great time. The Florida fans were way too mellow though. I took offense to the lack of harassment. I even called a few of them on it. :)

The upperclassmen suck, and I don't think you can make the call that the freshmen "aren't ready" until you give them a chance to prove it, much like the upperclassmen have proven that they suck.

Although I guess Peterman isn't an upperclassman, but he sucks.

Wait, all of our upperclassmen suck, or what are we talking about here?

I think you play the best players. I'm not a fan of "taking our lumps" with less talented players or players who aren't ready just because they happen to be freshmen and some think this year doesn't matter.

Personally I have no idea whether they are ready or not, but if they aren't earning playing time on the practice field, they shouldn't play. They have to earn the chance to prove it---as some of our freshmen have. Just my opinion.

Peterman looks more scared than Worley, which is pretty damn scary when you think about it. Worley to me seems like the prototype "game manager" style QB. He isn't going to make mistakes to lose a game for you but he isn't going to make crazy throws to win it for you either.

If you want him to find a groove and get confidence in his abilities then you have to let him throw the ball a lot against South Alabama. Just tell Neal and Lane to block all the time. When you have an unexperienced QB he has to get confidence in his abilities as a leader and as a man. Right now, he has neither.

I said it in another thread and I will say it again here. If you want Worley to get his confidence going, then open the offense up. Go 4 wide in a shotgun with one RB standing beside him with the threat of running a draw play in the back of a team's mind.

Let Worley throw 40+ times in a game to his recievers. We keep saying we have young WR's who don't have a ton of experience. Last time I checked running routes in games and catching balls in real games is how they get better and prove they are worthy to be on this team.

People can flame away at me all they want but we don't have the personnel to run a Read Option offense because of 2 things: We have no QB's with speed and athleticism. We have no RB's with elite speed or the ability to run over a would be tackler. Jalen Hurd can't get here fast enough because honestly watching Neal and Lane run is making me sick.

If we let ANY of our QB's throw it 40 times , we need to look for a new Off. Coordinator. Average receivers and below average QB's provide no justification for this. Our O line needs to get in gear and blow people off the line and our RB's need to quit dancing around and hit the holes quickly and we should be shoving the ball down teams throats running the ball 40 times a game.

You guys kill me. Our players work hard, bust their tails and miss out on a lot of fun college life training to give their all for TN. You guys sit on the couch, drink beer and ridicule their efforts. Are they doing great--no. Are they the best players TN has ever had--obviously not. But they are working hard trying to restore TN to its rightful place among the best in college football and you jerks make fun of their efforts. It's one thing if they were quitters but they fought to the end. If you want to make fun of hard working college kids, due it amongst yourselves and not behind an anonymous post

QB play is not acceptable. Have you read CBJ's comment about freshman QB's. they r not ready YET. Force feeding are exact words used by CBJ. Time will come but until then......I hope Worley doesn't get hurt or we may be in a lot of trouble.

Yup.

An injury to Worley would be devastating.

We would go from 1 offensive TD a game to none.

I don't want to see anyone get hurt but who the QB is matters much less than seeing if Bajakian and Jones are willing to start adjusting their game plans some to me at this point.

These offensive players aren't picking up this read option game at all.

No and any coach that listens to the fans on who should be starting should be fired immediately. I think jones honestly thought peterman looked better in practice. You can't predict what a kid will do in a hostile environment in a real game.

He didn't have to predict anything, all he had to do is look at the 3 big points we scored with Peterman against Austin Peay!!!!

Very nice post. I'll say again: the defense is essentially the same guys who gave up the most yardage and points in UT history last year, so I'm impressed with the improvement. Some lapses, of course, but lots more plays being made. Lack of depth will be taken care of by year 3 or 4.

As for the QBs, there are head coaches who would have started one of the freshmen from game one, taking some lumps along the way, because of the potential upside. (Most of us already knew what Worley's ceiling is, and I assume the coaches could see that pretty quickly.) But, there are many more coaches, and apparently Butch is one of them, who need more tangible proof in practice before they'll hand the reins to a true freshman. I'm pretty sure if one of the guys had shown himself to be a supernatural freak, Butch would have started him.

Heres my take on playing the true freshmen. Jones has 4 yrs to turn this thing around. Neither Worley nor Peterman are the long term solution. This season is a wash, Jones gets by no matter how many games we win. Play your young guys, find out who youre going with and next year they will game experience. There is no substitute for experience. Maybe we get a real stud qb next year. If Dobbs or Ferguson looks good, red shirt the new guy. But I just don't see the point in struggling with someone who is not the future. JMO.

If Dobbs or Fergy came in and struggled how can we say Worley and Pete are NOT (for definite sure) the future?

Also, I don't believe in playing for next year. JMO
