You're out of your mind. I don't give a crap about rankings. We had needs and addressed almost none of them.
Next year will only matter if it makes our team better. We didn't make it better yesterday.
We didn't fill a couple of needs, but
-we roll with 5 qb's now and we only had 2 on scholly. 2 elite 11 qb's is a need met and then some.
-we needed wr's badly, and we have a couple of studs. Thats a need met.
-we needed db's and we have 5.
-we filled the need at TE
We needed at least 1 more OL, 1 more rb and more lb's and a couple more dl.
Seems like we filled more needs than we missed, or about even. Not bad for 31 days. Hoped for better, but we had a couple of kids back out that didn't want to rebuild. I didn't realize that this staff signed 8 kids that were committed elsewhere. That number doesn't sound that bad to me.

QBs and WRs were relative strengths
Which DBs will play?
We filled TE with likely redshirts, and that's not a bad thing
We need more than 1 more OL, more than 1RB and more defense across the board - impact defense.
We didn't fill anything to compete in our league, at least on paper.
You can rationalize anything to make yourself feel better, but the stretch to decent from merely passable is one helluva lot further than the stretch from passable to poor.
If he "can sell anything", it would stand to reason he would have landed just one of the six big time recruits they were in on as recruiting wound down(Lawson, Bell, Bellamy, Boyd, Levenberry, Ford).
and if he can't sell a revered former player that has a street named after him on a coaching job, how can he sell a high level recruit that has no UT connections?
that comment has so many levels of stupidity, there is no use in trying to explain it to someone who would post it.
For future reference, when people don't want to explain something to you, it's because they believe you don't have the mental capacity to understand.
I said I thought Butch Jones was a winner the day they hired him. I haven't had my head buried in the sand. I was concerned about the staff he hired, but I've said repeatedly that I thought he would get the job done here. That changed today. I don't believe he will ever win a championship here. He hasn't shown me that he's capable of anything special, while coaches like Freeze, Sumlin, Franklin, etc. are improving their programs by leaps and bounds. Not to mention programs like Florida and Alabama who put more distance between themselves and us with every signing day.
Here is my issue.....with recruiting.....the staff......Dooley and Sal stole a recruit last year from CBJ....we let go of HINSAW? Who was an excellent recruiter....never able to secure Tee Martin....used Cincy staff....He can sell UT well....but SEC recruiting requires the entire staff....honeymoon year is over, not a lot room for slippage...better get on a dramatic learning curve.....or we will be talking same ole same ole of near misses.....the Martin thing may have had a greater impact than we know......
AU & OM weren't really long time entrenched staffs. Two months seems like it was long enough to fill more needs. The results and excusemaking really just raise more questions for me. Of the 8 prospects that were turned, how many were turned from SEC schools or traditional powerhouses? Why didn't we win any head to head battles against AU when we hired 2 of their former coaches, one of whom is supposed to be a recruiting superstar? Why couldn't we get a marquee RB given the OL and CJG supposedly being our best recruiter? If the focus is 2014, why haven't they wrapped up any of the bigtime in state prospects and out of state legacies and how long should we wait before we worry if they don't get early commits from those players? Given the 2013 schedule and loss of talent from the Jr class, I don't expect big improvement on the field but I think that by tying on the field success to recruiting success, CBJ is now in a must win position because he will not make it more than 3 years here if next year's class is no better than this year's in terms of filling needs with elite talent that does not need to be coached up. I think we need answers to these questions if there's going to be buy in for giving 'em time.Agree on defense of course. The HC and defensive coaches know how bad our D has been. Martinez mentioned fans across the state talking about our db's lack of playmaking ability and inability to go get the ball.
The only thing I am rationalizing is really more reasoning in that our program is way down and he had 31 recruiting days to compete against the best of the best that have been entrenched for years, and we pulled 8 away and were very close to pulling a couple of more in a short time. The thing I am most confident in is he and the new staff's focus on the state. Coaches have talked about it but were all talk. Pieces are already in place and having such a recruiting focus on areas like mid tn with coaches with relationships here will help build the program back up. That, I am confident in.

Auburn is easier to recruit to than TN. Always will be. Not sure about OM, but we'll see what happens there.
And he's got time. You either roll with it or complain about it along the ride. Another coaching change in the next 3 years is the last thing this program needs.
I do agree on one thing with you. If next years class isn't better than the one he had 31 days to put together after a losing season and complete turnover, I will be concerned.
I don't think Jones realized what he needed to do to recruit successfully in the SEC. He brought his coaches from cincy, believing that his one or two good recruiters, Thigpen and Graham, could carry the load. He now sees that his best recruiters are akin to the fourth and fifth starters on a baseball team. We need an ace or two to overcome our natural recruiting difficulties.
