Probably so. And then if you asked them the next morning after they get beat by 50+, I bet they would say it wasn't worth it.
Now i know you're about to say "Were Tennessee we dont back down! We will play anybody!"
But lets be honest Were not winning a championship next year, It will be an auto loss, Next years goal needs to be to get to a bowl game.
And with this schedule, Were not guaranteed to win 5 games.
Austin Peay

at Florida

Auburn will be alot better under Malzahn.
Missour will be better.
Vandy will be good (Despite what alot of UT fans wanna think)
Hell Western Kentucky is not a 100% win IMO
Theres a CHANCE we lose 8 games for the first time EVER.
Call me what you want but for the best interest in this program we need to buy out this game.
How does it help us to go get smacked by 45+ plus in Eugene?
WTF? Is this guy serious? When we ANNIHILATE them wuss-pothead Oregonians,we will RECIEVE TREMENDOUS NATIONAL PUBLICITY!!! Go back to bammer.com,OP! go Volunteers of Tennessee! Back down? My good sir,you MUST be a Yankee.

Oregon came to Knoxville with no guarantee of winning. Playing good competition never hurts, even if you are getting beat.
You can't disguise your team's weaknesses. We started out this season with 2 wins. It gave false confidence that this year might be different. People thought the NC State win was proof of some turnaround. It meant nothing as Florida showed in week 3.
You take your losses when they come after the game is scheduled. If you don't want the chance of losing, then don't schedule anybody but weak weenies outside the SEC. I hope it hasn't come to this, where we're avoiding scheduled games because we're scared of losing.
This is basically what every other team in the conference does. Playing games like Oregon puts us at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to bowl eligibility because while everyone else is scheduling 4 guaranteed wins, we schedule 3 guaranteed wins and one guaranteed loss.
I still have yet to see anyone make a legit argument of what good comes from flying all the way across the country just to let Oregon lay an epic beatdown on us. Simply proving you aren't scared isn't really a positive IMO.
Then you shouldn't schedule games like this again. But you don't back out of a scheduled game. Look at the precedent for this that Dooley laid in his brief tenure. He cancelled North Carolina. Were we better for this decision? No we were not. It cost us some bad reputation and it didn't lead us to bowl games, but it did cost us a measure of self-respect. Let me clue you. We aren't headed to any major BCS bowl games quite this quick anyway. Play the game and learn how much speed matters. Test the new 4-3 defense under new leadership against an offensive juggernaut. We can't guage our progression, if there is some, by playing Akron or UT Martin. This is basically what every other team in the conference does. Do you think Alabama didn't get some press by playing Michigan to open the season? Playing a strong team early is some of the best press you can get. Playing a good team and playing well doesn't hurt you, even if you lose.

This is the real essence of my argument. 20 years ago a team like us who has to recruit nationally needed to play in other parts of the country to get added visibility. That's simply not the case anymore. With the new TV contracts and 24/7 ESPN coverage, games like this no longer have any business on our (or any other SEC teams) schedule. Sadly we've signed up to be Oregon, Oklahoma and Nebraska's whipping post over the next 5 years. Hopefully after that our AD will see the light and stop scheduling these stupid games.
It's like I keep telling the guy. If we don't want these type of challenges, then don't schedule them in the first place.Good point, but I still don't see any good that can come from nationally being known for pussin out of games. I think we may surprise some people.... wishful thinking? Maybe, but I don't like running from a challenge.
