Don't Shoot the Messenger
I got a chance to watch JT's highlights yesterday, it looked impressive and kind of reminded me of another film I had seen in Adrian Martinez. I went back, watched Adrian's film then watched JT's right after and here are my observations:
1.) They both have big arms and it shows on the tape. In comparing the two I believe JT has the stronger of the arms. Adrian in his film shows several more touch passes and deep balls vs JT's where yes there are several deep balls but there are more over the middle passes and ones towards the sidelines on his roll outs.
2.) JT's throwing motion is smoother and quicker than Adrian's. Does this provide better results? I don't know but that delivery is good.
3.) It could be because of the film and his OLine is horrific vs. Adrian's but JT throws a better ball on the run. One thing that was great to see was multiple instances where he stops sets his feet quick in a good throwing position and delivers a dart. It could be due to Adrian not having enough roll outs on his tape but I was not seeing the kind of zip and placement that JT provided on his. One thing I liked about both is they continue to look downfield vs. taking off and running.
4.) Adrian is more consistent in his throwing mechanics from the waist down. Martinez consistently has solid weight transfer during his throws which will provide for more consistent speed and accuracy on this throws. JT while when he does have good weight transfer he delivers a very good ball he more times than not does not fully step into his throws in the face of pressure. Sometimes he doesn't have the opportunity but it is something you would like to see more of. He also has some instances on roll outs where he does this as well.
5.) Their footwork in the pocket is very similar. There are several instances where both Adrian and JT have to step up in the pocket. All times their footwork is solid enough where they are able to keep a good base as they move. They both have the ability to sense pressure and they both avert pressure well.
6.) Adrian is faster and accelerates quicker. Some of this could be due to JT's longer frame but it does appear that Adrian has the upper hand in both aspects.
7.) JT throws the middle ball and sideline routes better than Adrian and with more zip. This could be due to the lack of these types of throws in Adrian's tape but wow can JT deliver those kind of throws.
8.) JT is far more aggressive in wanting to throw into tight windows vs. Adrian. They both appear to go through progressions well but there are several throws that JT goes for far more often than Adrian and completes. From seeing this I can now see why is completion rate may be lower than others: his OLine sucks which will lead to quicker decisions and it appears he feels like he can fit the ball in a tight space. As we saw with Brett Favre this style is feast or famine and will result in quite a few INTs. Adrian appears to have a leg up in the decision making process.
If you like Adrian's film you're gonna like JT's film. After watching and knowing how much recruiting services put stock into intangibles it's very surprising that JT is only rated a 3* vs. Adrian being a 4* and top 200 kind of guy. Could be the stats or it could be the one camping more than the other I don't know but JT is definitely on Adrian's level.
If JT's decision making were to be on par with Adrian's I would almost be more apt to take JT vs. Adrian for a pro-style offense and the great thing is that this is something that can be coached!
Just some thoughts.
