'18 CA QB JT Shrout (UT signee)

He threw over 400 passes last year for over 3,000 yds. He completed 50% of those passes. He threw for 26 TDS and 25 interceptions. He may eventually be good, but he’s got a long way to go..It should be noted that he’s really only played 1 year of HS ball.

Agree, throwing to covered receivers in the SEC = interceptions.

This is a good way to win the hearts of Vol fans, for us to begin liking him and pulling for him before he even gets here. Well...it warmed my heart anyway. Thanks, J.T. Appreciate your taking time to tell us how you feel.

:good!:

Don't know about motion, looks somewhere between Warner and Marino, but the flight looks like a Pennington pass.

Twice as strong as Pennington watched it for 4 yrs not close at all and on the high school numbers we do not know what his team was like or the competition was so maybe lighten up just a little on his numbers. I have some outstanding high school numbers become zip and some crap numbers become stars look at Rodgers numbers in high school and college not real impressive at all not nor Brady’s

Alright I haven't been real excited about this kid but he clearly wants to be a Vol. We need more of that and I hope he becomes a star.

Not being a dick, but most that sign want to be a vol. I don’t believe we are holding any players against their will.

FWIW, Ainge explained the back foot throws on his show. Would really be good for some of you to listen to him about the position, schemes, etc.

That footwork is taught. When throwing to a spot on the longer throws you try to get enough loft for the receiver to adjust his speed and run under ball to block the defender from the back. In college he will have to make the read and throw quicker since the receivers are faster and the rush comes quicker. Some are confusing a throw off the back foot due to pressure that is weak and off balance versus a throw that is driven by the leg action to loft the ball for distance.

That is the problem I had with his highlights. They showed too much of that type throw, which is probably because he was very successful at it. Near the end there were some shorter route plays that were thrown normally with velocity.

He intentionally appears to sling it out there for his receivers to fight for it - counted 4 times on one film where he probably shouldn't have thrown it and it ended up being a touchdown - get a few of those and you think you are bulletproof at times.

It appears he was in a system that was West Coast pass happy which is a great proving ground, his footwork is incredible for a high school qb and he has really good instincts and feels pressure which some quarterbacks never
figure out. I like him a lot -but you never quite know with qbs.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The only high school game JT Shrout ever started came during the final game of his sophomore year in 2015. He fractured his fibula in the first half, which means he’s yet to play a full game as a high school quarterback. To call Shrout, a class of 2018 prospect, a sleeper recruit would be polite. A senior at Hart High School who hails from Newhall, California, Shrout is the Rivals.com No. 91 player in California. Another recruiting service ranks him as the country’s No. 1,192nd player.

After a two-day stint of wowing NFL coaches, quarterbacks and assistants at The Quarterback Collective in July, it’s become clear that Shrout could go down as the country’s most underrated quarterback prospect. Shrout is committed to Justin Wilcox at California, but he isn’t exactly the type of commitment who has the message board denizens foaming at the mouth for his arrival.

But it’s safe to project Shrout, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound rising senior, as one of the biggest steals of the 2018 recruiting class. That was the consensus of coaches at the QB Collective, including one NFL coordinator who told Yahoo Sports that Shrout was by far the most polished prospect there. Shrout wowed all the coaches with his technical precision, polished footwork and smooth throwing motion. “I think of all the quarterbacks who were here, if I were an NFL general manager or quarterback coach, [he’d be] the guy who could step in on day one and fundamentally work within an NFL system,” said Sage Rosenfels, a longtime NFL backup who works as private quarterback coach in the Omaha area. “His drop was smooth. His fundamentals were very efficient and he throws a great ball.”

Shrout shined amid a loaded field of quarterbacks that included the country’s top 2018 prospect (Justin Fields), the top 2019 prospect (JT Daniels) and the grandiose potential of an elite 2020 prospect (DJ Uiagalelei). All are stellar and have physical advantages over the slight Shrout, but none flashed the same skill set. “He’s the beautiful, natural-looking girl with no make-up in the corner of the room,” said Rich Bartel, a former NFL quarterback who trains quarterbacks in Texas. “There will be a lot of other sexy people who walk in front of your eyes, but he’s the one you should marry in terms of quarterbacks.”

I'll roll with the NFL talent evaluators on this one.

JT needs to Redshirt. Carry the other 3 into next year and ride it out with QD/JG.

Any good player will only be here for 3 years. Redshirt JT and let him start day 1 in 2019.

It’s a new regime and our current QB’s smell of Butch Softie Era.

Let JT go the Darnold route. Helton did that and it is paying dividends.

I'm still not sold that one of the current QBs can't unlearn the garbage development Jones's staff heaped on them. There is a reason multiple QBs have left UT under Jones and been VERY good elsewhere.

I think that’s fair. QD is a lost cause simply because he only has a year left.

JG needs serious coaching and just overall improvement physically.

McBride would be a catch all if injuries happen again.

I’d prefer to sit JT for a year and roll with him for 2019.

We will see how our current QB’s fare in 2018 if QD and JG both see significant playing time. Honestly surprised JG hasn’t been rumored to transfer because the gap isn’t significant between him and QD.

Shrout is a good prospect but won't see the field until JG/QD both leave. They were all held back by Butch. Shrout will rs and hope to beat out whatever highly ranked qb we get the next year or two when JG leaves.

He won't play over two qbs that were higher ranked qbs, with better numbers, and better film in high school. QD and JG got a ton of praise nationally from all types of NFL and college guys.

I don't agree with this. Kiffin took a broken Jonathan Crompton his senior season and turned him into arguably the hottest QB in the SEC the 2nd half of the season.

It won't take long for a good OC to make a difference with the QBs. Assuming QD doesn't transfer, I would say all our QBs are in play.

Lost cause? Lol.

Our present QBs are going to be under tremendous pressure to improve this off season..so I dont know what that means for Dormady.....but for JG it means he is going to have to step up his performance quite a bit....JG will really have to put in the work this offseason with his receivers...right now he has the advantage, but if he cannot make the throws then it will not bode well for him...going to be a lot of pressure and competition this year...may the best qb play is what I say...............
