Calimari says SEC title means nothing

To reply to the topic at hand.

I for one don't think the SEC championship "means nothing". However, the Vols also aren't swimming in SEC banners either.

But let's put it this way. If for the next 10 years straight, the Vols win the outright SEC championship and SEC Tournment but never get past the Sweet 16, would you consider this a successful time period?

I'd say nope.
You are right. But if we do win the SEC the next ten years, its better than the last ten years. Seeking to buck the trend thats all. But i would like to see the SEC get stronger as a conference so it would mean something, nobody in the country is looking for a contender out of the SEC. They are just slurping UK because they USED to be good.

Just out of curoisty UK fans, what was/is the fanbase's thoughts on that 02-03 team who got derailed from at least a Final Four appearance by one freak injury to Bogans?

I think it was mix of two different feelings. The fan base was obviously upset, but I don't think that they went into sensory overload. That 2002-2003 team was great by the end of the year, but did not have the expectations really to be a lock for a final 4 or a championship. As odd as it sounds, the UK fanbase was somewhat able to rest on its laurels, that it was a great season and just wasn't meant to be. I'm not sure we could have stopped Dwayne Wade with a .357 that day.

However, the exact opposite was true in 1997 with the Derrick Anderson injury. It was devestating. Everyone knew without a doubt that we were repeating as national champions if Anderson were available for the championship game.

The visions of grandeur still run wild in the bluegrass today, how great it would be to brag of a 3 peat, instead of three straight title games with 2 championships.

If Kentucky wins the SEC and loses in the 2nd round of the tournament, the season is a failure. That's just the way it is in the bluegrass. Kentucky basketball is the top of the mountain. The lights are white hot at the mountain top and expectations are even higher.

Oh, lawdy, miss scarlett....these white hot lights are making me sweat. Theah so white hot! Oh, deah! Wheahs mah hankie?

Hey, why wait? Just call it a failure now and beat the rush
since, basically....KY is on a standard fail course in BB - somewhere around 95% of the time. I'm good with that.

So can the sane be said for football? You wouldn't be happy at all with an sec championship?

Are you trying to compare an SEC Basketball Championship to an SEC Football Championship?

No. I am just trying to determine if people here would deem the football season a success if we won the sec championship.

I understand the we only play for championship mentality, but people act is if being happy for winning the sec means u have no clue what you are talking about.

If only the tournament matters, why are people so passionate during the regular season to blast our own players.

Football's regular season means a lot more than basketball regular season. Football you have little room for error and some years losing one conference game can cost you a shot at the championship. Plus you win the SEC Championship you are automatically in the BCS. Not to mention the way it's set up now, winning your conference is pretty much a requirement to win the NC.

Not so in basketball. Basketball is all about the tourney. Sure the regular season is still important but not at football's level.

Maybe because they see those same players not getting it done in the tournament?

His team has already won the SEC. He probably said this to motivate his players to go to that next level. I think the man is a sleaze, but can understand why he made the statement. I would bet if they did not have the SEC wrapped up, his tune would be different.

Yes. Winning the SEC in Football makes it likely you will be playing 1 more game for the NC. I would equate it to winning a Regional Championship in the Tourney.

I tend to agree, I don't even really watch basketball conf. Tournament unless we are playing in the championship

That team was a run-away freight train by the end of the season.

I remember them being so out of sync on the offensive end that day is why I thought he would have made a difference.

And I stand corrected, I saw a UK fan at the game with a 1988 (I think, it may have been 98) SEC Champions T-shirt on, so obviously some Kentucky fans care about SEC titles.

This is why playoffs in College Football would diminish the conference and the regular season.

No it wouldn't. Everybody would be trying extra hard to make the playoffs.

The current system diminishes the chance of most teams from winning because they have zero chance to make the bcs title game.

Only coaches on the hot seat, or in danger of losing their jobs will try something as futile as touting conference success. Especially those in elite conferences, with elite paychecks.

i understand, we too had a coach, Kiffin, who disrespected the league and we too were too blind to see it. You, my friend, are a blind enabler. calipari has and is a cancer on every program that he has coached. I understand the SEC isnt the powerhouse in roundball like it is in football but he shouldnt hvae dissed the SEC either. JMO

After losing today, KY will want to win the SEC tourney. It now means something to them.
