You are right. But if we do win the SEC the next ten years, its better than the last ten years. Seeking to buck the trend thats all. But i would like to see the SEC get stronger as a conference so it would mean something, nobody in the country is looking for a contender out of the SEC. They are just slurping UK because they USED to be good.To reply to the topic at hand.
I for one don't think the SEC championship "means nothing". However, the Vols also aren't swimming in SEC banners either.
But let's put it this way. If for the next 10 years straight, the Vols win the outright SEC championship and SEC Tournment but never get past the Sweet 16, would you consider this a successful time period?
I'd say nope.
Just out of curoisty UK fans, what was/is the fanbase's thoughts on that 02-03 team who got derailed from at least a Final Four appearance by one freak injury to Bogans?
If Kentucky wins the SEC and loses in the 2nd round of the tournament, the season is a failure. That's just the way it is in the bluegrass. Kentucky basketball is the top of the mountain. The lights are white hot at the mountain top and expectations are even higher.
So can the sane be said for football? You wouldn't be happy at all with an sec championship?

I understand the we only play for championship mentality, but people act is if being happy for winning the sec means u have no clue what you are talking about.
If only the tournament matters, why are people so passionate during the regular season to blast our own players.

No. I am just trying to determine if people here would deem the football season a success if we won the sec championship.

Yes. Winning the SEC in Football makes it likely you will be playing 1 more game for the NC. I would equate it to winning a Regional Championship in the Tourney.
I think it was mix of two different feelings. The fan base was obviously upset, but I don't think that they went into sensory overload. That 2002-2003 team was great by the end of the year, but did not have the expectations really to be a lock for a final 4 or a championship. As odd as it sounds, the UK fanbase was somewhat able to rest on its laurels, that it was a great season and just wasn't meant to be. I'm not sure we could have stopped Dwayne Wade with a .357 that day.
However, the exact opposite was true in 1997 with the Derrick Anderson injury. It was devestating. Everyone knew without a doubt that we were repeating as national champions if Anderson were available for the championship game.
The visions of grandeur still run wild in the bluegrass today, how great it would be to brag of a 3 peat, instead of three straight title games with 2 championships.
This is why playoffs in College Football would diminish the conference and the regular season.
Only coaches on the hot seat, or in danger of losing their jobs will try something as futile as touting conference success. Especially those in elite conferences, with elite paychecks.
