Calling Out Pearl Haters (merged)

Tournament play is NOT all that matters or they wouldn't play the 30 or so regular season games.

The large number of games is why a single game matters little and wh the tourney is so important. Ask NBA fans for validation.

Huge? In some ways, maybe. Our last big one like this doomed us.

After the recent events it was huge and you know it. There's a reason the coaches were so emotional at the end.

Don't downplay a big win because 2 years ago the team "only" made it to the Sweet 16 after the Memphis win. That team went 28-3 in the regular season, that is a heckuva year.

I'm still amazed that people don't like Bruce Pearl. UT has never had this kind of success in basketball before and certainly not this kind of national exposure. When Green was around we made the tournament but no one was excited about it, no one cared and you could tell no one did. Now the fan base is energized and UT is quickly becoming and honest to god (men's)basketball school. Pearl hasn't missed an NCAA tourney and he brought home our first out right SEC season championship since the Ernie and Bernie days. There are a lot of Vol fans out there that have unrealistic views of our basketball team. Make no mistake about it, CBP is the best thing that has happened to our basketball program outside of Summit. He may never take us to a final four but he's the guy that's going to plant the seed that we can and should make it a goal every year for this program.

I'm not into the emotional end of it. In the end, that will hurt us. I want us to win big games like it's something we expect to do.

We had a great regular season which led to Pearl's greatest achievement - SEC regular season title. Aside from that, we have jack to show for it.

I'm curious. Why are you on today of all days bashing Pearl's postseason record? Again, 24 hours after the biggest win in school history and the best thing you can think about posting is bashing Pearl's postseason record?

I'm on here talking about Pearl's postseason record because 25 guys decided to start threads calling out anybody who doesn't think that Pearl's an elite coach, as though one January game can suddenly provide proof either way. I didn't jump off the bus after the USC game, and while yesterday was an insanely great win, I have enough perspective to know that it's still just a win in January.

I would have been happy to talk about what a fantastic win it was, but by the time I checked in to the board, the only threads that were active were the ones in which the Pearl As Godlike Coach guys were pumping their chests and talking about how stupid and wrong everybody else is.

Par for the course for the Guru's. Par for the course.Have yall ever been wrong on anything? just wondering.who's your life coach?

Tennessee will never become a men's basketball school, football will always be first to 3/4's of VN.

I've had my question marks about Pearl, heck I still do but the one thing people can not argue is the fact he has brought this program alive. Before he got here our goal to begin the season was to just make it to the tourney, now our goal is to atleast get past the sweet sixteen. It feels good knowing at the beginning of the season that their is a VERY good chance we will be playing in March. Now with the recruits Pearl is starting to bring in it looks like we are becoming a team that can actually start contending for a National Championship in the near future.

I'll tell you what I don't like:

Just now on PTI, the question came up of "how big a win was the victory over Kansas for Tennessee?" and, of course, the talking heads couldn't just answer the d@*n question.

Rather than saying something like: "Hey, this was a big win for a program that had to dismiss its best player and was playing with only 6 scholarship athletes," we get to hear more of the same garbage . . . "What's going on at Tennessee? Two of the three revenue producing programs are in a lot of trouble." GOOD GRIEF! From my count, the Florida gators have had more players arrested this year than we have and Kentucky has a coach that has left two previous schools with vacated wins and sanctions due to recruiting violations. The "hostessgate" thing is waaaaay over-blown and isn't going to result in anything for our program. The basketball team didn't suspend these players "for a half" or some idiotic crap like that . . . the BEST player on the team was kicked off. That is what you are supposed to do when crap like this happens. Why not say that?

I am not a believer in the big ESPN conspiracy, but this really ticks me off. Hey, Wilbon, answer the d@*m question and quit with all of the "outrage" about Tennessee. If you are going to get your panties in a bunch over that kind of stuff, why don't you go off on the other programs that have MORE secondary violations than we do or the schools that have coaches that have left previous schools under the cloud of MAJOR violations.

With that, I think I will end my head banging against a wall for the day. Go Vols.

Ummm... those other "30 or so regular season games" are played to make it into the tournament. You play to win it all. Regular season matters, tournament play matters much more.

Texas just got their first ever #1 ranking. I'm sure their fans are happy with that and won't expect anything in the Tournament.

Solid point. BP today- "this win means nothing if this team doesn't build off of this and have season success"- obv paraphrased

This happens with everything. I've been on both sides, and posted both ways. I heard something on Ftake this morning that is worth repeating. (The subject was the arizona. Cards Offense calling out the D for the performance)

Those guys on that offense have at some point in their careers been on a team where the D unit produced and the roles were flipped, thus veterans know not to call out their opposite unit. We all (including myself) should take this lesson to heart and get over ourselves.

Really? Which of the folks that your ilk calls "haters" started any "Where are the Pearl Lovers" threads after the USC game?

The style of play comment is just dead wrong. Few here care.

I don't know why we keep hearing this. I don't think anybody on this board cares about the style we run, do they? All we ask is that the team look like it has a plan when they find themselves in a halfcourt situation and the threes aren't falling. I don't particularly want us to start playing grind it out basketball all the time, but I want us to be able to at least do it occasionally, because teams that can't don't win several games in a row in the tournament.

I don't know why it's Now a proxy for detesting some of the coaching on display, but it clearly has something to do wit the limited basketball wits about those in love with Pearl. A few if them know basketball and just believe in regular season wins as a measure of greatness. Most need a reason that those griping just don't get it so they feel better about splitting with Vandy and beating SCe twice.

Just Win Baby! i totally agree on the grinding comment and felt the players for a while had little to do with TEAM. I saw a TEAM out there yesterday for maybe the first time in two years,,, maybe some who weren't playing were the me guys who need to get a better perspective.

We really haven't had the me guys problem. This group shares the ball exceptionally well, almost to a fault in fact.
