Candace Parker left off team USA for Rio olympics

Well ya'll have really had go at it here. Understandable. I had Parker as a lock for the Olympic team. Really the "new girl" on the WNT is Delle Donne. She has never played at WC or Olympics. Stewart played on the WC team. Actually Stewart has played for USA basketball a lot more than EDD or Griner. IF you are inclined to the "who replaced Parker argument" it was probably more likely EDD than Stewart.

As to Geno picking the team. Sorry, just not the way it works. Here's a nice little video about who picks the team. Straight from the horses (Callan's) mouth. The committee picks the team. (and yes I am quite sure Geno has input, a lot, but not the last say)

Personally if I was picking the team, Parker would have been on it. But not Catchings. Maybe not McCaughtry either. Maybe not Fowles either. But I don't pick the team.

As to Geno not wanting a TN player on the team because of the rivalry or recruiting. Seriously? There is no rivalry between UCONN and TN anymore. UCONN's rivals are ND, Stanford, maybe Baylor, you know someone on UCONN's level. And recruiting? Harris? Really? You think TN is recruiting in the same circles as UCONN anymore?

Maybe not but there is still lingering bitterness over the recruitment of Maya Moore (why else would Geno still be asking for an apology from Tenn in order to resume the series?). In all honesty, UConn really doesn't have a peer or rival anymore. Nobody is on their level especially not Stanford who hasn't won a championship since 1992 but Tennessee remains a strong enough program to challenge them with the right leadership (which they don't currently have)...and I notice that none of the players you suggest shouldn't be on the team are UConn players which leads me to believe that you are a UConn fan. Sue Bird at age 36 is just as ridiculous as Catchings.

I would definitely take CP3 over Fowles. I have not seen near the consistency out of Fowles. Angel McCaughtry literally carried the Dream for a couple of years. Delle-Donne, had an excellent game in her matchup with Cp3 ... CP3 had 17Pts-6RB-6ast and DD had 33pts, 14 RBs.

Candace does play at a position of strength. But the thing is, she isn't at the bottom of that totem pole. She's at or near the top. Add to that she can play other positions and it's pretty clear how important a contributor she could be, especially in a tournament format. Leaving her off the team wasn't a basketball decision no matter how anyone tries to spin it.

To make things worse, she has no class. This past year she had had ample opportunities to stand up for her players, defend their plays, own up and share some of the blames, particularly in areas where her shortcomings as a head coach was evident. But as far as I could tell, she always, without an exception, put the blames back on the poor players never being accountable/responsible for her own actions. Does she have a shot at becoming a head coach of our national team as I asked? You answer me, yes or no.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on the orange-grapefruit thing. When I went to UTC it was a proud satellite school for UT. Only after I left did it start that Chattanooga thing. I graduated from UTC but my diploma says U of Tenn. I'm quite proud of that.

I get this from my Dad. He taught me to stay with my chosen programs and show some fortitude. He is an Atlanta Braves, Falcons and a Boston Celtic fan and has been for his lifetime. I am a lifetime Laker and Steeler fan and enjoy sleeping through baseball games.

Yes, I am a UCONN fan. One who had Parker as a lock. But I would have had Bird, DT, Moore, Charles on the team for sure. I'd have probably taken Stewart too. However, some on here are a bit confused. Thinking Stewart is Geno's Golden Girl. Stewart is USA Basketball's Golden Girl. No way she was not gonna be on the team. She's gonna be "the face" of WBB/Team USA for the foreseeable future.

Bird is 35. USA took them both because they are the Captains. And they don't really have anyone to replace Bird yet. They are going to have to find someone though. Pretty sure this is her last go around.

They were on probation for a while and their team really stunk then. UT fans know about this because UT was very involved in the story. Young bought recruits out of Memphis for Bama, recruits UT was very much trying to lure to Knoxville - there was a lot of head-to-head recruiting wars, and UT generally lost them because Bama paid $$$ through a Memphis high school coach. Six different schools turned Bama in to the NCAA over the recruitment of Albert Means, including Phil Fulmer. Fulmer is the one Bama fans blame most in what happened to their team, despite the other 5 coaches and the Feds, who were after Young for other reasons. It was an enormous story that went on for months - every UT fan should know at least an inkling of what went on. Bama fans probably know LESS about it because they stuck their heads in the sand & just blamed Fulmer. And because it stained Bear Bryant along with Bama.

I disagree with this. She still carries her team, and they were in the wnba finals last season. She says she is feeling her age, but she's still a monster player.

But I wouldn't have had a problem if she were not on the current team, so long as the other veterans were not on either. Sue & Taurasi, but no Tamika - "the committee" would have no justification for that.

When a story hits close to home, it is much more covered. All we heard at the TN/GA state line is what was going on with UGA and UT...I watched pro football back then. And mostly pro basketball. Slept through baseball.

We ran a pro-type offense with defined positions. . . I taught my girls by position and responsibility: PG, SG, SF, PF C. . . Ran the sets through the high-post... Only played zone if the mercy rule came into effect... They loved it.

He's a cheat...read the biography of his assistant, Chris Daily, who had to coach UConn early in Geno's career because he scheduled unauthorized practices. CD coached the team in his absence during their conference post season tournament. You Geno supporters are the types who would kiss the ass of Adolph Hitler if he gave you enough victories. His antics will eventually catch up with him...but you UConn chumps will ride his coattails into the depths of hell itself for another win or two.
