it was a disappointing season to be sure but success is relative to what? This team was more successful than:
- Barnes first two years at UT as he was dealing with the mess both Martin/Tyndall left him
- It was more successful than Tyndall’s lone year.
- It was more successful than 2 of the 3 years Martin coached. And while I am on the topic who would you rather rather take (Sr. Jordan McRae, Jr. Josh Richardson, Jr. Jarnell Stokes and Sr. Jerome Maymon OR Fr. Jaden Springer, Fr. Keon Johnson, Sr. John Fulkerson and So. Josiah James)? We were overrated this year in the preseason and all of us drank the punch.
- It was more successful than Pearl’s 2010-2011 season and arguably less disappointing than Pearl’s 2008-2009 year.
- It was more successful than all 4 of Buzz Peterson’s seasons
- It was more successful than at least 2 of Jerry Green’s teams
- It was more successful than all 3 of Kevin O’Neil’s teams
- It was more successful than all 5 of Wade Houston’ teams
- It was more successful than 6 of Don Devoe‘s teams
etc....I have watched UT’s basketball program since 75-76 and have seen a lot of poor to mediocre basketball. This year we had zero chemistry, zero leadership and were forced to have freshman lead us. No matter how much potential they have at the next level, neither was up to it, Barnes had no answers and it is that simple. To suggest it was the most disappointing year in the history of UT basketball lacks perspective.
And to those who continue harping on Barnes $5M salary, how much of his salary did he earn this year? He isn’t stealing money from UT. It was a mutually agreeable contract and if UT wanted to let him walk to UCLA they could have. If they had based on our history of replacing coaches, with the lone exception of Pearl (who is a good coach, a great showman but also a slimeball), I find it highly likely we would be having even less successful seasons than we had this year. Barnes isn’t flawless but only 44 more coaches in the history of college basketball have more wins than him. That isn’t by accident and it isn’t as if he has coached traditional blue bloods. He has to reflect on the errors of judgment he had this year and how he built this team.
Note: as I post this Texas is going down to Abilene Christian. How is that sure fire coaching replacement going for Texas? 6 seasons and Shaka Smart has done jack.
LolI'd take Shaka all day over Barnes right now. He's only 43. Texas has two 20+ win seasons under him. Tennessee has two under Barnes. Texas has been to 3 NCAA tournaments and Tennessee 3 under Barnes. Texas won the conference tournament championship this year. Texas won more games this year and we both lost in the 1st round.
Overall he's been to 9 of the last 11 NCAA tournaments and went to the Final Four in that span. Barnes last 4 years at Texas he lost in the 1st round of the CBI once, the 1st round of the NCAA tournament 2 times and won 1 game once.
All in all Barnes won 3 post season games beyond conference tournaments in his last 7 years at Texas and no conference titles of any kind.
Texas wasn't wrong for getting rid of Barnes and hiring Smart in his mid to late 30s will pay off if they don't fire him this year.
Literally more than 50% of the time he’s won at least 1 game in the NCAAT, so your statement is quite inaccurate. He’s more likely to win at least 1 game in the NCAAT than he is to “just make the tourney”.bewildering that people defend barnes anymore.
hes simply a good coach, thats about it. his ceiling is literally just making the tourney.
but here at UT thats what we strive for...moral victories.
Our fans would want Shaka fired, why shouldn’t Texas fans?I'd take Shaka all day over Barnes right now. He's only 43. Texas has two 20+ win seasons under him. Tennessee has two under Barnes. ZERO chance Casey Alexander leaves Belmont. He's so much like Rick Byrd is funny. They play golf together all the time and he's there for life............(as long as they keep winning)Here are some coaches that I think White could potentially get whenever Barnes decides to hang it up:
Casey Alexander - Belmont
Chris Holtmann - Ohio St
Kermit Davis - Ole Miss
Tad Boyle - Colorado
Kevin Keatts - NC St
Porter Moser - Loyola Chicago
Buzz Williams - Texas A&M
Would you be happy with any of these coaches?
So you would fire a coach with 700 wins to hire Paul Mills who got one upset? Yeah, that makes sense. Let’s do it. Jeebus, some of you people....Lmaooooo Barnes had a better season than Paul Mills? Apparently UT is a worse program than Oral Roberts now. Barnes fans would sh&$ talk their own mothers to save Barnes reputation.

Rick Byrd wanted the UT job, not sure that’s a great point.ZERO chance Casey Alexander leaves Belmont. He's so much like Rick Byrd is funny. They play golf together all the time and he's there for life............(as long as they keep winning)
They are the ONLY other team in the OVC that I ever pull for.

I don't think under any circumstances will Tennessee be able to hire a top shelf nationally known head basketball coach. You can bank on the hire being either an up and comer or a retread.Hopefully there’s a better pool of candidates at that time than what you folks are throwing out there right now lol
Then we are foolish to hope for Barnes to leave because the likelihood of making a hire like that and landing someone who will having us dancing every year is pretty slim.I don't think under any circumstances will Tennessee be able to hire a top shelf nationally known head basketball coach.
