Carry Permit Holders

If you tell a cop you have a gun the best outcome you can expect is to be held up longer while he checks you out thoroughly. Worst case you get your gun confiscated or get arrested. There's plenty of stories online where the cop wasn't clear on the law. My advice is to act like normal and dont bring it up. Never offer the information that you are armed.

I've never experienced that. I've told them and showed my permit, never had an issue. Only been pulled over twice since having my permit so may not be the norm.

It depends on the cop. There's been plenty of cases where it didn't go so well.

I didn't phrase that well. I'm assuming he would ask if I'm carrying when I show my driver's and my permit. If they ask, then I'll tell them. Otherwise I probably wouldn't bring it up unless I'm asked to get out, etc.

I wouldn't give him my permit either unless he asks to see it. But, if he asks to see it or he asks if I have a weapon in the vehicle then yes, I would tell him.

Haha, I was joking about that but seriously. The fact you are carrying should never be voluntarily revealed unless asked by a cop.

I'm going to respectfully disagree.

I keep my driver's license and my carry permit in the same pocket of my wallet, and when I get pulled over, I'm going to pull them both out and hand them both to the officer.

I may re-evaluate that at some point given our fast changing, shall we say, "national" situation, but at this point in my mind, the local law enforcement are still the good guys and deserve my support and respect.

Sure, that's your prerogative. I agree with your last statement to a point but the problem is not all patrolmen know the law. Most of the time you would probably be fine. But you could also wind up like the man in Philly a couple years ago who was open carrying (it is legal there) and had police draw on him and take him to the ground.

I see your in Beech Grove J-P, you would probably never have a problem there. I got pulled over in Rocky Ford GA once while I was down there deer hunting. I had a rifle and a shotgun on the passenger side of the truck and got pulled over. I put one had on the wheel and one out the window so he could plainly see both my hands. He never even mentioned the guns. Had I been down town Nashville or Atlanta the outcome probably would have been very different.

In my hand gun training course this issue came up and the perspective from cops was that some want to know and some don't.

IOW it wasn't an "you should always volunteer the info" or "you should never volunteer the info".

At this point, I don't carry in the car but when I do I'll err towards volunteering the information.

How do you get it back and forth to work? :)

One other thing to note if you volunteer that information. 99.9% of the time the cop is not going back to his vehicle to run your license knowing you have a weapon. He may ask you to get it but most likely he is going to ask where is it and ask you to step out of the vehicle while he retrieves it. He is then going to run the serial numbers and make sure it isn't stolen. There is so much potential for things to go wrong and if you do some google searches on the subject there are plenty of stories where cops have harassed people once they know. I have been pulled over a couple of times with mine. The cop never asked, I never mentioned and all was fine.

I commute 5 days/week to/from Antioch, so I could be dealing w/ THP, Murfreesboro, Smyrna, Metro, etc.

Lately THP hasn't been as picky in enforcing the un-Constitutional HOV lane, so I haven't been pulled over. :p

Now out in my neck of the woods, I'm the law. :)

I have never even heard of this happening to someone with a valid CC.

Have honestly never heard anything remotely close to this. Maybe it varies by state, but in SC, I've heard overwhelmingly that you need to present your CCP when pulled over every time and that officers won't harass you, rather, most respect someone with a CCP.

My boss has a permit and in his class the teacher told them if they ever got pulled over to let the officer know there was a weapon in the car and that they have a permit. He got pulled over for speeding about three months after getting his permit. He did exactly as the teacher told them to. He rolled the window down and put both hands on the steering wheel. When the officer came to the window he told the officer that he had a gun in the truck and a permit to carry. The officer asked him to step out of the truck and told him he was going to put him in hand cuffs for the officers safety until the weapon was secure. The officer was cordial about the whole thing and wasn't a jerk about it, but it did make his speeding stop longer than expected.

It does. The police want you to tell them off the bat but you are not required to. The first link is one officers procedure for securing the weapon when a driver tells him he has a weapon. The 2nd is how a cop can react. Warning: The 2nd link has some very graphic language.

I would suggest doing some real research, dont go by what you have heard. Have a plan for what you are going to do before you get pulled over. Im telling ya if you offer up that information the best you can hope for is a longer delay.

If you are a conceal carry permit holder in the state of TN, does it make an average traffic stop more difficult? When the LEO runs your plates does it come up as you being a CC holder?

I always tell them right away amd hand them my license and carry permit if I'm at a checkpoint or stopped.

That is not required and none of the officers business in TN. Unless he asks you out of the vehicle beforehand and you have the gun on your person or wants your registration/insurance and you are dumb enough to put the gun with it (like in the glove box).

I don't know where you got this info, but almost all CAD's (computer aided dispatch) programs will tell the officer you have a carry permit when they run the tag. I will usually ask but a little common courtesy would be nice.
