Carry Permit Holders

If you are a conceal carry permit holder in the state of TN, does it make an average traffic stop more difficult? When the LEO runs your plates does it come up as you being a CC holder?

You're supposed to let the officer know right away

If you're gonna go .40 you might as well go .45

I had a 23 and got rid of it. Not a bad gun, just see no point in having a .40

though I'm new to it I agree with this sentiment. I have several 9mm's. Next purchase will be a .45 of some sort.

This. I've never heard of a CCP making a stop more difficult, but I have heard of it getting people out of tickets in SC.
If the officer wants to, he/she can take and keep the gun for the duration of the traffic stop. As I understand, there's a slim chance that'll happen as long as you're not blatantly sketchy or being pulled over for a bad driving offense.

I actually haven't been pulled over since I've had my permit, but I had to file a report when I was in a small fender bender (not my fault). When the officer asked for ID, reg, and insurance, I also gave him my permit and told him my piece was on my hip. He didn't even look at it, gave it back, and said "I don't need that."

I don't think they can tell if you're a permit holder through running your tags. They can when they run your license, but you're supposed to present your permit at the same time.

So they can tell if you have a CC permit from your license tag?

I've heard this before and my wife was stopped once (car is in my name) and the officer asked if she had any weapons, which she thought was weird. She didn't have a CC at the time.

That's a common question during a stop

I don't think they can tell from running your plate but I could be wrong. Paging the Count.

When I took my permit class they advised not to tell the officer. Ive been stopped a couple times and they never asked and I never mentioned it.

Same here. Someone asked the instructor if he should tell the officer he has a carry permit. Instructor said no. He made it sound like they already know when they run your tags or driver license.

Said just be honest if they ask if you're carrying at the time.

I've been pulled over twice since having a carry permit, and they've never mentioned it.

We'll be seeing you handcuffed by the side of the road someday.

In that permit class, didn't they play you the state required video showing the nice elderly lady getting handcuffed because she neglected to tell the officer she had a permit and he spotted her gun?

Don't know who taught that class, but I have it on the best authority that you should provide your permit along with your license when the officer first arrives at your window.

The guy that taught my class was a police officer. He recommended that you don't bring it up. Just answer honestly if they ask.

Well, maybe I was taught wrong.

Time to do some research.

The guy that taught my class was also a retired police officer. He recommended you let them know first thing.

:dunno:

I doubt it matters, but our instructor wasn't retired. Maybe a personal preference thing. I don't think there's any law on the books in TN about disclosure.

I'm sure ultimately you would be fine, once he runs your information and finds out you have the permit.

However, I put myself in the officer's shoes. He comes up to your window, you just hand him your license, he hasn't had time to go back to his patrol car and run it yet, and he spots the gun on your dashboard or in your overalls bib pocket, or whatever. He's probably going to go into safety mode and get you secured before checking anything else, for his own safety.

Remember, TN doesn't require concealment. I do believe concealment is smart, but it's not a requirement and I know lots of country folks who walk around w/ a gun handle sticking out of their overalls or sitting on their dashboard, etc.

Next time you get pulled over go ahead and yell "I have a gun" when the cop is walking up and see how that works out. I'm pretty sure they can tell by looking at your license and they have the right to ask but you are under no obligation to give up that information. I will never tell them I have a weapon unless they ask.

Took my class Sunday and it actually never came up. For me, I will inform them if I'm armed at the time, otherwise I won't bring it up.

Does anyone have a "Gun Thread" going? Just general what ya got, what have you bought, try out anything new recently, etc?

Thats just one more reason open carry is a bad idea.

If you tell a cop you have a gun the best outcome you can expect is to be held up longer while he checks you out thoroughly. Worst case you get your gun confiscated or get arrested. There's plenty of stories online where the cop wasn't clear on the law. My advice is to act like normal and dont bring it up. Never offer the information that you are armed.

Yes, because that's exactly how a reasonable man like me would handle this situation. :eek:k:
