If the officer wants to, he/she can take and keep the gun for the duration of the traffic stop. As I understand, there's a slim chance that'll happen as long as you're not blatantly sketchy or being pulled over for a bad driving offense.This. I've never heard of a CCP making a stop more difficult, but I have heard of it getting people out of tickets in SC.
I actually haven't been pulled over since I've had my permit, but I had to file a report when I was in a small fender bender (not my fault). When the officer asked for ID, reg, and insurance, I also gave him my permit and told him my piece was on my hip. He didn't even look at it, gave it back, and said "I don't need that."If you are a conceal carry permit holder in the state of TN, does it make an average traffic stop more difficult? When the LEO runs your plates does it come up as you being a CC holder?
When I took my permit class they advised not to tell the officer. Ive been stopped a couple times and they never asked and I never mentioned it.
I don't think they can tell from running your plate but I could be wrong. Paging the Count.

In that permit class, didn't they play you the state required video showing the nice elderly lady getting handcuffed because she neglected to tell the officer she had a permit and he spotted her gun?
Same here. Someone asked the instructor if he should tell the officer he has a carry permit. Instructor said no. He made it sound like they already know when they run your tags or driver license.
Said just be honest if they ask if you're carrying at the time.
I've been pulled over twice since having a carry permit, and they've never mentioned it.
I doubt it matters, but our instructor wasn't retired. Maybe a personal preference thing. I don't think there's any law on the books in TN about disclosure.
We'll be seeing you handcuffed by the side of the road someday.

Don't know who taught that class, but I have it on the best authority that you should provide your permit along with your license when the officer first arrives at your window.
I'm sure ultimately you would be fine, once he runs your information and finds out you have the permit.
However, I put myself in the officer's shoes. He comes up to your window, you just hand him your license, he hasn't had time to go back to his patrol car and run it yet, and he spots the gun on your dashboard or in your overalls bib pocket, or whatever. He's probably going to go into safety mode and get you secured before checking anything else, for his own safety.
Remember, TN doesn't require concealment. I do believe concealment is smart, but it's not a requirement and I know lots of country folks who walk around w/ a gun handle sticking out of their overalls or sitting on their dashboard, etc.
Took my class Sunday and it actually never came up. For me, I will inform them if I'm armed at the time, otherwise I won't bring it up.
Does anyone have a "Gun Thread" going? Just general what ya got, what have you bought, try out anything new recently, etc?
Next time you get pulled over go ahead and yell "I have a gun" when the cop is walking up and see how that works out. I'm pretty sure they can tell by looking at your license and they have the right to ask but you are under no obligation to give up that information. I will never tell them I have a weapon unless they ask.
