Charlie Strong

well sure

but but why would UT offer that much?

what exactly are we paying for?

a DC?

Were paying for a coach that took a team that was 15-21 overall and 5-16 overall to a BCS bowl game in his third year. A coach with previous SEC experience, a very successful coordinator everywhere he has been, has learned from some of the best (Such as Urban Meyer and Lou Holtz), and has strong ties to Florida. His recruoting has been very impressive as well, especially when you consider he is having to recruit players to a team that plays in the big east. For example he beat teams like USC, Auburn, Clemson, and many more for Nick Dawson a US Army All American from Charlotte North Carolina.

Oh the race card. Why are Tomlin and Shaw in my top 5 list then? If Gruden is 1A Tomlin is 1B for me. Both have rings and would command a ton of money, are personable, and have had lots of success.

Charlie Strong is a terrible choice at this time for this football team. Plenty of reasons outlined above. It certainly does not help his case that he has played the race card several times. It may well be true but you do not say that to the media. What it boils down to is he is not personable in any interview I have seen. Would I rather have Charlie Strong as a buddy in a dark alley than Dan Mullen? Sure. Do I think he has leadership qualities? Sure. If he has another successful year next year would I consider him? Sure. But as head coach at this time of this particular football team it is a poor choice. Recruiting issues, lack of a track record of head coaching success, and not what I would refer to as "elite" defensive success. Top 25? Sure.

Maybe I just expect more out of a coaching hire than other people that have gotten used to the Dooley era and does not look at the sheer numbers.

James Franklin is the man that ths program needs right now and I stress "needs".

There is not a coach out there in the mix that can recruit anywhere near as strong as Franklin. There isn't a coach remaining on our list that can out-motivate the man.

Review Strong's experience and show me somebody who'd be better. Would I rather have Patterson? Probably. But who would be a better hire? The guy knows the SEC, has defensive expertise, has florida and south carolina contacts--would probably be a very good recruiter. Seriously, is fisher better--coaching in the weak acc? He's qualified but doesn't know the SEC.

Franklin has not even head coached a full two years yet. He is an up and comer for sure. But not as a coach at this time for this team. He needs a longer track record.

I already did a few pages ago. Strong has an average rank of the 24th best scoring defense in the country for the past dozen years or so. Chavis has the 20th. Strong has had a recruiting class average ranking of somewhere in the 40s for the past three years.

You could say the same thing about Chavis. And I dont want Chavis as HC, do you?

back to a question from the other thread...Why didn't Florida hire him?

I personally don't want to be lower than Florida forever.

8 wins in the SEC is not a track record?

8 wins from a program that has never won 8 games in a season during most of our lifetimes?

A top 15 recruiting class at a school never known for being successful and little budget for recruiting?

Dude, you need to wake up and smell the coffee.

I would be happy with Charlie Strong now that Gruden looks unlikely. I'd take Strong over most the other names we've hard, especially Jimbo Fisher.

Really? How about we get the guy best qualified for the job regardless of race? At this point in time, Strong is not the best qualified, not by a long shot.

I'm sorry I'm African American and I am happy to finally get to see an African American get a shot at Tennessee for Head coach.

No that is a single year. A track record are those results over multiple years. Same as Strong. And I actually like James Franklin, just not at TN's coach in this particular coaching search.

You dont need to reinvent the wheel. If someone is successful somewhere else, pay him more and steal him. I like Shaw more than Franklin because he has done it for multiple years. Simple as that.

Oh and they have 5 SEC wins, not 8.

Who the heck cares what his skin color is?! Equally racist to promote skin color as it is to discriminate against it.

What's the hype around Charlie Strong?:

21 years of SEC experience.

Defensive success everywhere.

Passion for coaching.

Resurrected a Louisville program that went 15-21 in previous three years before his arrival (Dooley's record at Tennessee was 15-21)

Taking Louisville to its third-straight bowl game for the first time since Bobby Petrino.

Inherited a 4-8 team and took them to 10-2 in three years.

Taking Louisville to its second-ever BCS bowl (pending Cincy win over UConn, highly likely).

-----

If you want a "big name", fine. Who are "big names" outside of Gruden and Patterson? It doesn't look like any celebrities are looking towards Knoxville. But if you ask "what's the deal with Strong?", just read above.

Im so sick of hearing "SEC experience" Dooley had some SEC experience. Urban Meyer had none when he came to Fla. SEC experience is the most overrated thing in America.

Look at his defensive stats at U of L the last 3 years. Down hill every year.

He has NEVER won a senior day at U of L.

With out Teddy Bridgewater this team is a .500 team.

People need to stop looking at team records alone to bring in a new coach.

Without Collin Klein, Kst. is only decent.

Those type of arguments are beyond stupid.
