Charlie Strong

I support Strong, and would be in favor of several others on the list, including Gruden. And I haven't called, nor will I call, anyone a racist. Any more sweeping generalizations you'd like to make?

Well some of his supporters sure made te sweeping generalization that those opposed were bc he was black therefore racist.....

Stating the truth about being overlooked for jobs isn't playing the race card. Its the truth. Some people are so mad he dared to speak up about something he strongly believes. How dare he not sit and take it like a good little boy.

Since he was responding to a thread string about the "Strong supporters" playing the race card, I'm not so certain that's what he meant. But that's ok.

Edit: I would also like to see a link to the context that Strong plays the race card to deflect criticism when "the going gets tough".

I have seen him posit to the media that that's why he has been passed over for jobs. I have NEVER seen him play the race card to cover for losing. Anyone able to provide a link for this happening? If so, I will immediately pull my support for him as the next UT coach. If not... Then shame on you for asserting it.

You answered your own question right there......

Look's like this is the new 'jon gruden' thread, but for a coach that might actually be interested

Well thats fine that some idiots did that but that does not mean that all his supporters are using that as THE reason why others don't want him as a coach.

But lets be honest for a minute. We are talking about a major college job in the south. I guarantee there are SOME, but not all, people that do not want him to be our coach for just that reason that and that reason alone.

Looks like Strong isn't going to a BCS bowl after all...The Orange bowl is projected to take NIU against FSU....Wow, that will draw a good crowd of about 20,000.

I completely agree.....I'm not dumb enough to believe there isn't some of that going on....hE accused me of sweeping generalizations so I brought up what had earlier been said....

Well I'm sure they would be willing to match salaries, but its what they cant offer that will eventually make Strong leave. The chance to prove himself against the best coaches in the country. A much better shot at playing for a national title, even if you do lose a game. Coaching the best players in the country. Even after they join the ACC they will never be able to offer him any of those things.
Also recruiting will become even harder for him once they join the ACC. By staying all he will do is make it harder for himself to eventually get out of there and move to a better job.

This from Jeff Schultz sums up why coaches want to coach in the SEC. Another school might match the salary but if you want to play with the big boys you come to the SEC.

Jeff Schultz‏@JeffSchultzAJC

Just for context on ACC $1.99 tickets on StubHub: SEC title tickets start at $283. Big Ten tickets start at $18.95.

Wait... Stating an opinion about why he believes he didn't get a job is "deflecting criticism"? Show me where he was being criticized for not getting the job. We'll start there.

The assertion that he played the race card to deflect criticism "when the going gets rough" was either not the intent of the assertion, as it was worded, or it was a ridiculous wording for the intended point.
