Charlie Strong

If it is Strong we should get an announcement within a couple days,The longer without an announcement points back to Gruden,I say hire strong let him get his staff an be ready to dop some serious recuiting.I fell he would be very successful here.

Seen were strong just took commitment from a dl....hmm

He has to continue to do his job while he is there. He can't just shut it down. The Vols haven't hired him yet. What if Gundy says yes, and Hart decides to go that route? Then Strong is screwed.

After keeping away from these forums for the past two days... I think I really want Strong. Talking to other non-biased friends really pushed me in this direction and I really think he could do wonders for us.

Has he improved the team? Yes, Kragthorpe went 15-21 including 4-8 in his last year. Strong came in and instantly went 7-6 and has now gone 10-2 in his third year.

Also, you can call the Big East a weak conference all you want, but he is coaching big east players in the big east conference so it is all relative. Not many coaches run away with their conference, especially only in there third year.
Edit: those #'s don't add-up for 3yrs but I'm not gonna go back and look right now.
Have you looked-up the records of Petrino (29-8), Kelly(34-6), or Meyer (36-8) first 3yrs in weak conferences? The good coaches do typically run away in the smaller conferences. The difference in those conferences is typically coaching talent. It's the proving ground or minor-leagues if you will for up and comers.

Guess we might find out. Good chance strong is the next vol coach. Get behind
him or don't. I could care More. Even if its
Fisher, I will support him. Vol till I fall

I am starting to slowly get on the Strong train. I mean his record isn't dazzling but it's Louisville, he doesn't have the facilities, recruiting budget, or the prestige to make great things happen there. At Tennessee he could really shine and there is no doubt the players love him. He has SEC ties and knows what it takes to win in this conference. I'll be happy with Strong, Fisher or Gundy but who knows maybe there is a big fish still lurking out there.

Yes, I am also well aware that context is everything in coaching success. You are aware that both Kelly and Petrino took over for coaches that got better jobs while Strong took over for a coach that got fired after 3 years? Really if you are going to compare Kelly to Strong Central Michigan is a much fairer comparison. After taking over a struggling Central Michigan program Kelly went 19-16 and managed to go 9-4 in his last year. You are right on Meyer, but were talking about a coach that has since gone on to win 2 national championships and just had another undefeated season. There is a reason he was one of the most hyped mid major coaches that I can remember, and there is not an available coach out there of his caliber.

My thoughts.

But it's a bigger risk than hiring a proven guy.

He's got my vote if/when we don't get Jimbo

Agreed, I just hope this is the last week of this search. I am ready for it to be over. I think if we get Strong and sourround him with a good staff, we will start competing immediately...

Coach Fish?
forshadowing?

I have been a Strong supporter for a while. He knows the value of a strong defense and he proved it at Florida. Bring him on and get to recruiting !!!i

as much as I dont want him....it does look like it could be Strong....I will not support him until he does something here, if he is hired...by that I mean actually win the East....sorry but that is my goal for him to reach before I will accept him.....if he does that then to me that would cement the decision to hire him over Davis or Petrino.....flame away but it will not change my mind....

I tend to believe Swain who said we would have a lot of kids looking at UT with Strong hire. I think that he would give our defense attitude. I hope that he would keep Pittman and Graham. Anyway I'll be very happy with Gundy or Fisher also..just prefer Strong.

Yeah I'd be good keeping, Pittman, Graham, Chaney and Hinshaw for that matter....let Strong get this D in order and keep our offense in tact.

Bears repeating. I do not want Strong as our coach. I don't discount the terrible record (24 - 15) over 3 years in a horrible Big East.

You say he did that with big east talent on his team? I say if you are a great coach you will get great talent no matter where you coach.

You said he has coached great? I say Petersen has coached great with Boise talent against a weak conference and beaten big teams (Oklahoma). He never had a 24 - 15 record after 3 years.

No to Strong. We don't need another Dooley or a slight improvement over Dooley.

Strong has coached under the best in the business.....Spurrier ! For many years he was trained by Spurrier in all aspects of the game. Recruiting, special teams, offense, defense, he has experience in it all. He is an SEC man and I believe he would be at Tennessee for the long haul. Just my opinion. Have been wrong before. As much as anything, we need stability in our program and I firmly believe Strong would deliver.

247 Update:

Fisher, then Gundy at the top. Next tier is (no particular order) Jones, Strong, Golden, Fedora. Met with Strong and Gundy. Haven't met with Fisher yet. Not sure about the others, but Jones turned down KY to wait on TN possibility. Jones to talk to Purdue and Colorado.

Nothing indicating Mora contacted or will be. Davis may (or may not) be in play. Some influential people feel he is at the top of the list, but nothing concrete.

New name in the mix - Bo Pelini.

That about covers it, I think.

Strong blows chunks. Would be as bad a settle as Dooley. You wanna talk about his credentials? Its the BIG EAST for crying out loud. 7-6 his first two years, getting blasted by Syracuse, barely beating Rutgers, etc. He has won 10 games because the Big East is a glorified version of the MAC. I don't know what some of y'all had in your kool aid but supporting this hire would be ridiculous. Not to mention his recruiting is incredibly overrated.Get some pride about you. We're Tennessee. No more settling for mid tier coaches.
