Can you chew gum and walk at the same time? Maybe he is interested in helping his son get started on the right path toward a huge career as the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers. Ever heard of them? He could be around his family and grandkids and move the program forward at the same time. What a crazy idea.

I have my doubts...

Go Vols.

Monte is almost 70 years old people, he took one of the hugest pay cuts ever to leave NFL and come to NCAA, hmmmm.. a big downgrade like that kinda tells me that he probably really won't even care that much, I mean who would want to work under their 30 something year old son when they are 70 and know a hell of a lot more about the game.

OK...that's just plain ignorant. Surely you are just trying to rile everyone with that bullsnot.

You don't need to lump anyone else in with this guy. He's blinded by his love for Fulmer and Chavis. No one could rationally argue why having possibly the greatest defensive mind in the NFL as our DC is a bad thing.

Your right and I'm only talking to the ones who are so negative about everything that's happened since fulmer left. He didn't want a dual threat QB and those people flipped. I didn't mean to lump everybody together! Sorry!

Letting Chavis go was a big mistake, huh??

Obviously this thread was started by a fulmer fan.

I wish Chavis well, but his services are no longer needed or wanted at Tennessee.

Bring in Monte Kiffin!! :dance2:

dont feel too sorry for the assistants i think they get paid as long as fulmer gets paid. funny LSU can pay chavis $1 a year and TN will have to pay the rest of his salary.

This is not accurate... Assistants are paid based on their own contracts which usually run year to year. A few may have multi-year deals but none are signed through 2014 such as Fulmer. I believe Clawson had a 3 year 1.2 mil contract which was the longest of the group...

Chavis was good but not Great. He will have good defenses at LSU just like he did here. But Monte should have Great defenses here. I will take the trade. Only thing I don' like is that Monte will probably not stay long because of his age.

I still think if Chavis is offered at Clemson he takes it. Woody is there and they are close friends, plus that's his homestate. With that said though, I think he would like to be in either position, just depends on who offers first.

I was seeing you're side of the debate, but you're missing one big point. Blood is thicker than water. I'm not sure if you're a parent or not, but I can tell you that a loving parent would give up any and everything he/she could if they felt they could help their child. I could see Monte being justified in the pay cut with the joy of helping his son succeed as a head coach.

Better be more than satisfied, I'm sorry but letting Chavis go=1 big dumbass decision

Are you really saying that letting go of Chavis to bring in Monte Kiffin is a dumb decision? Quit drinking the homerade for a moment and tell me that you'd rather have the guy known for the "Mustang" package instead of the NFL legend that invented the Tampa 2. I respect what Chavis did for UT and our D was good this year but I have to think it would have been AMAZING under Kiffin. Just like Fulmer, Chavis is known for doing less with more. Also, Chavis doesn't recruit. Monte won't have to do much in recruiting but anything he does will be more than Chavis did.

You really think that Monte's going to work under his son? Think of it more as us having a defensive HC and offensive HC. I just don't understand how anybody could be unhappy about this. And if experts thought Chavis was so great then he would have gotten a HC offer in the NCAA or a DC offer in the NFL. He didn't. He got offered to coach LBs.

Known by who? According to who? I am certainly more excited to have Monte Kiffin as DC than Chavis. But that is not an indictment on Chavis. He has not done "less with more" with his defenses.

Exactly. Chavis is a fine defensive coordinator but he's not a miracle worker.

He had dominant defenses when he had 1st round draft picks on the defensive line.

Yes, but even a Fulmer fan should know better. Heck, I was and still am a Fulmer fan(not to be confused with a Fulmerite). Fulmer would have sharted on himself if he actually thought he could get Monte Kiffin to be his DC. I mean, would you turn down Michael Jordan just because you had Clyde Drexler playing on your team? Do you turn down Coach K because you have Billy Donovan on staff?

The defenses have not been nearly as dominant without the NFL talent on the DL we had in the 90's. Chavis' defense have struggled badly with getting pressure on the QB in the last few years and that along with our soft DB coverage has caused our secondary to get carved up. We have been decent at stopping the run but have consistently been beat on 3rd down. You also have seen the tackling get worse and our players take terrible angles to the ball. Are you happy with what UF's offense has done to us under Chavis? What about what Bama did to us last year. The defensive stats are inflated because we only played a couple of good offenses the entire season. Good offenses handled us easily while we piled up stats against nobodys. The offense didn't help the defense out at all but not everything was perfect on the D. We couldn't even stop UCLA when it mattered.

You mean his defenses were better when he had better talent. Oh my goodness, amazing, I think you are on to something. When he had talent, his defenses were very good. When he had talent he utilized it very well. You cant ask for much more. If you are expecting Monte Kiffin to come in and put the clamps on UF's offense WITHOUT great talent on defense then you are going to be very disappointed.
