Chavis, almost an lsu tiger!

In comparison, LSU had very good talent on defense this year. But the results were very poor. You did not see that under Chavis. If he had talent then he put a good defensive product on the field.

My money is on Vic Koenning being the DC at LSU.

As for Chavis, don;t know where he will end up, probably Clemson though if he goes anywhere

You mean his defenses were better when he had better talent. Oh my goodness, amazing, I think you are on to something. When he had talent, his defenses were very good. When he had talent he utilized it very well. You cant ask for much more. If you are expecting Monte Kiffin to come in and put the clamps on UF's offense WITHOUT great talent on defense then you are going to be very disappointed.

Our secondary has more talent this year than any I can remember. We were still terrible in 3rd down and obvious passing situations. How do you explain that? The talent level is not as high as it once was which is why the coaching and scheme is so important. Chavis has shown that he is not creative with defensive schemes or blitz packages. Chavis relied on the players to line up and shut people down and was unable to scheme up ways to beat people. M. Kiffin will implement a system to put our players in the best situation to shut people down and not make them rely purely on their athletic ability.

John Chavis is soon to be an LSU Tiger, Sure was wishing Kiffin would have kept him but I guess not. There was a report here on 680 The Fan, the atlanta based radio station reporting that Chavis had agreed to a deal and it would be announced very soon, I heard a nice lump sum of money. Chavis is going to be dangerous along with LSU, I just hope letting him go doesn't come back to bite us in the ass when UT plays LSU in 2010.

Interesting.... I'd like to see him in an HC position to see how he does.

Yes we were nationally ranked in D this year but just how good was the offences that beat us Aub, UCLA, SC and just how good was the other offences we played N Illion, Wyom,
UAB Miss state. As far as I know we played two good offencive teams this year fla, ala

Monte is almost 70 years old people, he took one of the hugest pay cuts ever to leave NFL and come to NCAA, hmmmm.. a big downgrade like that kinda tells me that he probably really won't even care that much, I mean who would want to work under their 30 something year old son when they are 70 and know a hell of a lot more about the game.

Their father would. That's who.

Are you really saying that letting go of Chavis to bring in Monte Kiffin is a dumb decision? Quit drinking the homerade for a moment and tell me that you'd rather have the guy known for the "Mustang" package instead of the NFL legend that invented the Tampa 2.

i am excited also about coach m. kiffin. however, monte didn't invent the tampa 2 defense, it is a version of the pittsburgh steeler steel curtain defense of the 1970's. i would give chuck noll a little more credit for that defense than anyone else.

I don't think he has expressed any interest in being a head coach ever. He isn't crazy about recruiting and he hates the media. So I doubt he'd have much success.

I am thrilled to see what Monte can do and I wish him nothing but the best. I want to see UT be successful. With that said Chavis is clearly one of the best coordinators in the country and assuming Kiffin will be equally successful is not something we can do.

The college game is very different from the pro game. Players do not make the sophisticated pre-snap reads in college they do in the pro game, and physically the speed disparity between the "fast" college players and their slower counterparts is much higher than in the NFL. Part of the reason the cover two is so successful in the NFL is because the athletes playing it are so fast. It's harder for a player with elite speed to get to the corner or evade multiple tacklers in the NFL. Because college players are, as a rule, slower it essentially expands the field, making each zone bigger and harder to maintain control of. I'm sure Kiffin will adjust, but he doesn't have to deal with the stuff in the NFL he will have to deal with here.

The other thing we have to consider is that Kiffin is 68. We are probably looking at two to three years at most. Then we will be searching for another coordinator. The idea that Chavis could have been here for half a decade or more and that he already knows our current players and had proven to be successful makes me nervous about the decision.

It's a break even proposition at best in my mind as to whether we'll be better off defensively in the next two or three years than we were the last two or three.

Just sit back and hope for the best I suppose.

Chavis is back in Clemson this afternoon to meet with Swinney....and he has his wife with him this time.

It's looking more and more likely that Chief will be the next DC at Clemson....which leaves the opening at LSU vacant. I really hope Orgeron doesn't get that job.

Chief is Clemson's top choice -- the folks I know close to Clemson say it's not even close, he's who CU wants. Their other options are Paul Rhodes and Marion Hobby, so I expect Chief to be their guy.

Fantastic! We will be able to shred LSU's defense going forward.

The question is why the decline in talent? Did recruiting effort decline? Did teaching/coaching decline?

As I have posted elsewhere I think Chavis did a great job, especially in 05 and 08, where he had to keep putting his fellas on the field knowing they would get little if any help from the offense. I wish him the best as I do all the ex Tennessee coaches. Like them or not, I think all of them wanted to do their very best for Tennessee, it just does not always work out. If they have success elsewhere I tip my VOL hat (exceptions of course would be any who find their way to fla or bama...boo to you!)GO VOLS

:good!: He was the glue for many years. We may have had more losing seasons. Or the good ones would not have been as good.
