Since SEC play started he's been getting blanketed when he gets the ball. At one point tonight I seen 3 guys on him.Pretty consistent trend we're seeing with Lanier. He's good against lesser competion/weaker defensive teams. Not so much against decent defending teams.
SEC defenses are scouting him and adjusting, but he’s missing the same open looks he was money on until the Florida game. It obvious that Barnes still wants him taking those shots. Have to believe they will start falling again.Since SEC play started he's been getting blanketed when he gets the ball. At one point tonight I seen 3 guys on him.
Until other guy's on the team consistently take advantage of the double team it will continue to happen, too.
Calling Carla! @Volstylexxneeds a slumpbuster in a big way
He's still capable of making those shots because he is Chaz Lanier and has a super fast pull up and release. I'm like you, I believe they'll start falling soon.SEC defenses are scouting him and adjusting, but he’s missing the same open looks he was money on until the Florida game. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Lanier’s all around game since he was brought here to shoot the ball. He’s no Mashack on D but he’s not a liability IMO. Barnes has made it clear that his role is to shoot, not facilitate so the assist number can’t be held against him. This is all just my opinion - not all will have the same. The troubling thing with Lanier struggling to score is that he doesn't really bring anything else to the floor. He's an OK rebounder, but he has 1 assist in SEC play, 4 stls and 6 TOs. He's not a good ball-handler, and his defense is more of a liability than an asset.
Regardless, 18-63 (28.5%) won't cut it if you don't affect other areas of the game. Slumps happen, but he's got to snap out of it. We fortunately had guys like Z and Gainey step up in the second half, plus well-rounded offensive performances from guys like Phillips, Miličić, and Mashack. That helps hide Chaz's poor shooting when everyone chips in. The first half, when no one was scoring, Lanier's struggles were far more noticeable.

I had that typed out in the last post and deleted it because it got wordy. I agree, I don't think he needs to be averaging 4 assts a game, or anything, but if he can draw those defenders, and many times double teams, then it would help if he could get someone else involved. That's all I meant by pointing out the lone assist across four games.I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Lanier’s all around game since he was brought here to shoot the ball. See my response to WalkenI agree with most of what you said, but I actually think Chaz has been a perfectly fine defender. His defense is not nearly as noticeable as DK’s lack of it last year. Is he elite? Certainly not. But he’s fine. I wholeheartedly agree he has to score in order for this team to succeed though. Hopefully this is simply an extended slump and not a trend now that defenses have figured him out.
very good point. But he's still taking the same amount of shots he was before. He's just not making a good percentage. I sure hope he breaks out of it mentally, because after watching last night I think that's where he is. He actually had several open, not as contested shots that didn't fall. He can actually get the 15 foot shot just about any time he wants, he's just not knocking it down consistently. I think once he starts hitting that shot it'll open a lot of other things up for him.Since SEC play started he's been getting blanketed when he gets the ball. 1. It was 38 pointsKnecht had a stretch last year where he was 12-37 over 5 games and he only scored 36 points on those 37 shots. Then he went 10-18 vs Missouri and it kicked off a stretch where he scored 28, 36, 39, 25, 32, 31. Shooters can run hot and cold. Even the best of them.
