Chaz Lanier watch thread

You’re correct, did the math incorrectly

My point remains though about both shooting poorly, inefficiently, in a slump etc and thus both needing to shoot better than they both were in this stretch. Neither were shooting it good enough to continue to warrant the number of shots they were taking unless those numbers changed, my guess is Lofton had himself a cold stretch or 2 also, Knecht’s lasted 5 games, Lanier is at 3, I wouldn’t sound the alarm for benching the guy like some would seemingly be suggesting. I think it would also be fair to mention the higher defensive metrics Lanier is posting as potentially helping offset some of those inefficiencies as well.

My hunch is Barnes knows much like last year with DK, if he (Lanier) doesn’t get going and he a top offensive option we are likely in a really bad spot…he should and will get every chance to bust out of a shooting slump, just like every elite offensive shooter would. Again, the dude is on pace to break Lofton’s 3pt record, shooters get cold, even the best of them, I would press the panic button after 3 games.
To be fair, I'm not pressing the panic button and I'm not sure anyone is calling for him to be benched. I'm just presenting facts around the two examples.

I have complete faith in Lanier eventually snapping out of it. It is concerning that the slump hit at the worst possible time (start of SEC play and our shrinking roster). Hopefully we look back and it was just a 3-game skid.

Ok? Both were still a detriment to their teams offense, once again, not sure how this is even a discussion.
Ok, one of the 2 realized he wasn't feeling it and helped out in other ways, while the other is not. One's team didn't lose during that skid, the other contributed to one of the worst losses ever by #1 ranked team.

Something that has not been talked about that Chaz brings to the game; Chaz is the only player on the court that you can tell the opposing coach has said that under no circumstances can he have an open shot. I would think this is a distraction to opposing teams and opens things up for others.

It’s a lot more convenient to have a slump against buy games. I think we can all agree on that. I also think we can all agree that the UF loss was happening even if Lanier shoots his normal percentages. That game was a perfect storm.

Why are you so full of ****?

Chaz's 3 game slump averages: 8.3 ppg, 5 rpg, 1.3 spg
DK's 5 game slump averages: 9.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.2 apg

Chaz took more shots, that's the only difference. Even against Florida he lead the team in points (with ZZ) and rebounds (with Felix & Igor) and steals (alone). The team shot 56 times, 40 of those weren't taken by Chaz. It was a team loss. Trying to make Chaz the scapegoat is a lazy take.

...Because this thread is about Lanier? And you missed the key word in there that said "contributed". I never said he was THE reason.

One also rebounded and defended better, one also played 3/5 against LM buy games, but please, tell us more.

Personally Ilike this team a lot more with Gainey, Millicic, ZZ, Dubar, Cade all having the midset they need to score for the Vols to win. If Chaz stayed hot like the start of the season, I think they would defer too much leading us to some of the challenges we had when Knecht want having his best offensive game. I hope Chaz get some of his mojo back but not too much.

Why would it be concerning if you had complete faith he’d come out of it?

Troof! A marked increase in efficiency would be welcomed!

Me having faith isn't proof of anything related to him actually snapping out of it. Even though I have faith (meaning I believe/hope) that he will snap out of it, I have no idea how long it will take. What if it takes three weeks in the meat of our schedule? What if it never happens? Our roster was down to 9 players when his play took a dive. It also came at a time when our schedule became the most difficult.

To be fair... Chaz has faced 2 of the top defenses in the country during his slump.

Florida is 16th on Kenpom
Georgia is 17th
This. He's getting doubled on almost every play, too. Knecht was a little better passing out of it (maybe because of his height?). This is what Chaz will have to get better at. Passing out of the double team to someone who theoretically should be wide open.

What about the 4 game stretch against Kentucky, LSU, Arkansas, and Vandy where he shot 5 of 18 (27.8%) from 3?

Even when healthy DK still had cold nights from deep. Difference I've seen so far is he was willing to drive to the rim and shoot FTs to offset those cold shooting nights.

Chaz has only had 3 games in 17 where he shot under 30% from deep. DK did it 12 times last season in his 36 games.

The difference though DK still averaged 15.2 ppg in those cold nights. Chaz in his 3 6.7 ppg.

He has to find some balance so he can get buckets when the 3 isn't dropping. DK had that and Chaz still has to show it.
This. Chaz can't get to the rim and finish the way Dalton did and Chaz is not as good from midrange (esp in away games).

Are you really arguing that there's any kind of real comparison there and insinuating that Lanier is solely, or even mostly to blame for that UF game? That was an all around team effort. How about mentioning the games that ZZ and Milicic couldn't throw it in the ocean and CL was lifting the load? Or mention the historic season he is having so far, even with the 3 game slump?

What?!? Sorry, but shooters get it back and lose it from time to time. It does not come part way back. Hee Hee Hee .... It's literally all or nothing.
A shooter ... sees one go in ... then another one goes in and then another one goes in ... and then they are off to the races.
Chaz is having to play at a higher level, he is now being defended by quicker, taller, and more physical players who can jump.
Those factors have affected his mind. When he gets his head right ... it will be bombs away. Patience is our friend.

This will be corrected over time. Right now he is leaning back when he is shooting those mid range shots. It might be a habit or it could be higher caliber of defensive players.
But that is not the real issue ... he has to get used to the level of talent he is playing with. When his mojo returns ... we will celebrate and party.

I’m learning more and more, the grayer I get, how much different, that people like to fan. Not that there’s anything wrong with either way.
But I’d rather watch and appreciate verbally how good they are right now. And not keep it real, devils advocate, point out the obvious(other than trying to earn the early bird specials aka bragging rights imo.. That group of folks I don’t understand… message board or not this squad is 16-1. And I wouldn’t have considered it worthy till we’ve dropped 2-3 more with the Chaz only getting 10 per.

Edit.. @gainesvol82, sorry to rant reply. I am On your side of your reply.
