Five people are dead and at least 16 are injured after a shooting at a July 4th parade in the affluent Chicago suburb of Highland Park.

The shooter - who remains at large - is said to have opened fire from the roof of what was an Uncle Dan's outdoor outfitting store, picking off people in the crowd who at first confused the sound of gunshots to with firecrackers and fireworks.

Chicago Sun Times reporter Lynn Sweet was at the parade when gunfire rang out. She has since shared photos and videos from the event which show people lying on the ground, and has described it as a 'bloodbath'.

Pleas for help finding parents of Little Boy who got lost in Highland Park parade shooting chaos: Fears they may be among victims of mass shooter who killed six

A desperate search has been launched for the parents of a boy who was separated from them in the chaotic aftermath of a mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade where a gunman killed at least six and injured 24 people.

The boy was 'safe but with strangers' in the aftermath of the shooting in Highland Park, an affluent and quiet suburb in the outskirts of Chicago, according to a tweet from CBS Chicago's Jackie Kostek.

There also appear to be blood stains covering the child's leg and shoes, though it is unclear if it is the child's blood or someone else's.
