Chicago War Zone

With all the fear-mongering in this thread by posters who are afraid of their own shadow , it's nice to know that Conde Nast just voted Chicago the best big city in the US for the seventh straight year.

LOL

A media conglomerate who's brands cater to the upper class urban dweller just voted?

Yeah well, it triggered you so there's that. And we know you never venture out of your safe VN Bubble so you probably can't comment on what a great city Chicago is or why it's in top ten of most visited cities every year.

Triggered me?

I like visiting Chicago for short periods once in a while, wouldn't live there or any other medium to large city.

It's a great city, if for no other reason than there is bar on every corner!

I spent a week or so there in August and absolutely loved it, one of the better trips I've taken recently

Chicago Woman, 61, Is Left BRAIN DEAD After Being Punched And Stomped On The Head On Train 'by Eight-Time Felon who wanted to steal her purse'

A Chicago woman has been left brain dead after she was viciously beaten by an eight-time felon, police said.

The woman, 61, who has not been identified, was riding the CTA Red Line on January 4 when she was targeted by two men - one of whom was allegedly convicted criminal Mijawon Johnson, 36.

As they attempted to steal her purse, Johnson pinned the woman to a seat and repeatedly punched and stomped her head and stomach, and jumped on her 'with all of his weight', prosecutors said.

Johnson was on parole for armed robbery at the time of the attack, has served six stints in prison and now faces charges including attempted murder - which could be upgraded as the woman is not expected to survive.

At some point during the attempted robbery, the attacker flew into a violent frenzy and repeatedly attacked the woman's head and stomach.

The victim is believed to currently be 'on a ventilator and brain dead', CWB Chicago reported. Prosecutors said she is not expected to live.

Fascinating - Chitown is 27th on the homicide list per capita behind the hellscapes of Nashville (13), Raliegh (15), Anchorage (17) and Omaha (26).
one small part of a city vs a whole city. I am sure if we divided up Nashville like they did with Chicago the numbers would look a lot better.

How did you deduce that the ranks were comprised of 'one small part versus whole cities"?

it was included in my first post you quoted.

East Chicago was listed as a separate entity from Chicago.
Stockton and Oakland were listed as a separate entity from San Fran.

I didn't see a break down on that top whatever list that broke out West Meade from the rest of Nashville.

to be fair Birmingham did have another "city" broken away from it.

they don't seem to be consistently pulling the city itself vs the metro area.

I was looking at this, it doesn't show any breakout of suburbs versus cities, just what I understood to be metro areas.

couple different things going on here.

1. pretty sure the original subject matter was crime. I brought up homicides because that was part of the discussion back in October or whenever that was.
2. this is a different source that just focused on homicides, vs the source I was responding to where everything was lumped together.
3. my break down on the cities was all crime, not from my linked source.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Asks To Add $1.25 Billion To City’s Massive Debt

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson suggested borrowing more than $1 billion to fund affordable housing and other economic initiatives.

Shifting away from the city’s current funding methods, the proposal allows for dozens of tax increment financing districts to expire with the goal that revenue will increase the city’s funds. TIFs currently give developers breaks in their property taxes and previously played an important role in Chicago’s economic development since their implementation more than three decades ago. In 2022, TIF districts took in $1.3 billion dollars in revenue.

Despite looming pension debt and City Hall’s ineffectiveness in collecting debt, some aldermen see this plan as the perfect opportunity to do away with TIFs.

According to a report by Illinois Policy, Chicago has the second-highest debt per taxpayer in the U.S. Chicago also has the highest amount of unfunded pension benefits totaling more than $33.7 million. Under Johnson’s proposed plan, the city plans to use the money from the expiring TIFs to pay back the accumulated $2.4 billion debt by 2061.

Stockton is over 100 miles from SF. Oakland is its own city.

East Chicago is in another state...

east chicago is still part of metro chicago. just because it crosses a state line doesn't stop the city from being the city. last I checked there aren't any check points or security clearances to go from state to state. Growing up in Chattanooga we didn't ignore the crime in Rossville or Fort O just because it happened in another state.

you are right about stockton, not sure why I included them. Oakland is less than 10 miles from San Fran, well within its metro area.

the main point was its real easy to control the crime statistics for an area if you can just carve up things arbitrarily relative to the subject matter.

People are so weird about cities here lol, no one needs to be spending millions on police officers in schools. My middle school had one and then he beat his wife and got arrested
