Chick-Fil-A President: Men shouldn't eat other men's chicken

I'm not against gay marriage but you are just arbitrarily deciding what is alike and what is not alike.

Marriage since the beginning of country has had two components - 2 people; heterosexual couple. You dismiss polygamy since it violates the 2 people part but say the heterosexual component is irrelevant.

It is a debate. The Chick-fil-A guy has one opinion and has worked to express that opinion. If you support gay marriage and work to make it illegal you are working to express your opinion.

Are you against polygamy? Not arguing, just curious.

I'm not against gay marriage either. I want to be against polygamy, but can't intellectually justify it with my stance on gay marriage.

Just heard on Erik Erickson that the chick-fl-a president was never asked about gay marriage. The question was about marriage, and the reporter took the liberty to throw in the "gay" part after the fact.

Wander too far from a major city, and there's a lot of real backwards thinking "Christians." Within any city, though, I think we are relatively tolerant. At least Knoxville is pretty gay friendly.

Why is Christians in quotes? A Christian is a follower of Christ by definition. God has defined marriage as one man and one woman.

I don't understand what is so hard to understand here.

you used a slur to describe God in attempt to ridicule beliefs of others - sounds like bigotry to me.

Slur? Ridiculous. Mocking a concept you don't believe in isn't bigotry, because it's not preventing or attempting to prevent you from maintaining your beliefs.

I'm saying that if you want to be a grown man believing in a fairy tale, go for it. I don't agree with it and I think it's silly, but it's your prerogative. Conversely, plenty of adherents to religion feel that if a grown man wants to marry a grown man, he shouldn't be able to because doing so violates the tenants of said religion.

That's where the bigotry comes in. Dan Cathy can look at a gay couple and think what they're doing is wrong; he can look at a NYT wedding announcement and feel bad for the two women because they're living what he considers to be a life of sin. Perfectly fine... that's his belief system. But when he wants to use his belief system to dictate the marital status of two consenting adults based on their gender, that's where a line has been crossed.

You're standing in a building that's on fire. You own your condo and have every right to be there, but I try to get you to leave to save you.

What am I?

But you define me as a bigot.

... are you really trying to equate being a firefighter with preventing gay people from getting married to each other? Not only is that ridiculous in and of itself, but preventing same-sex marriages from occurring isn't really saving anyone. As far as I understand, the Christian bible considers homosexuality to be a sin... not allowing gays to marry each other doesn't save their souls from eternal damnation.

Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve.

Gosh darn coloreds and queers!

In all seriousness, this is hitting on why some folks are so upset over this. Many homosexuals view marriage equality as a civil rights issue, and I think a few years down the road most will look back on it in a similar way.

:post-4-1090547912: Didn't see that one coming!!! (I mean absolutely no disrespect here, that really did catch me off guard lol.)

My belief, as a Christian, is that I am supposed to do what I can, when I can, to convey the message that we are saved by grace. Believing in Christ and accepting him as your savior is the way to heaven. God forgives all sin, when you ask for forgiveness. I am a sinner. I will never be a perfect Christian. And I fail daily, regardless of how hard I try. It's because I'm human. And that is also why God loves me as his own.

And I have to say, the firefighter thing still has me laughing. I don't know if you were making fun of me or not, but that was awesome!

My issue with this is that many of the "sins" in the bible that Christians find themselves guilty of or want to help others with shouldn't even be issues. Homosexuality, blasphemy, idol worship, and other imaginary crimes are completely harmless. Nobody is hurt or harmed by directly committing these things and they have nothing whatsoever to do with morality outside of what a bunch of superstitious 1st century Israelites thought about social norms.

And here we are living in the 21st century and people still drive there political and social leanings based on it. It's amazing and embarrassing at the same time.

Bigotry does not require trying to prevent someone from practicing their beliefs. It is about your own tolerance/intolerance for others viewpoints. It's pretty clear you think people that believe in religion are dumb, weak minded, inferior in some way.

That is the definition of bigotry.

I'm sure you would call me a bigot if I thought ill of someone based on their skin color would you not?

If Cathy thinks gay people are inferior then he is a bigot.

If Cathy believes that society has defined marriage as between a man and woman then that belief itself is not necessarily bigoted.

Do you consider simply voicing an opinion as being a bigot? Or does someone have to act upon those thoughts/feelings for it to be true bigotry?

to play Devil's advocate, all people have a moral code that drives their political/social leanings. Religious people have a particular source for that moral code.

there is no absolute code on which an individual should or can base their political and social leanings

I believe the definition indicates that if you harbor feelings of hatred (extreme) or derision or inferiority for some group of people based on some trait of that group then you are a bigot.

I don't see anything in the definition that demands action.

: a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

What I'm saying is basing such a moral code on the beliefs of people living 2000 years ago and thinking it is the end all answer doesn't make sense. We have come a long way over two millennia. Why keep regressing? What exactly is harmful about homosexuality?

...a rhetorical question of course.

To me treat is the key word. I view it the same way a racist (actions) vs being prejudice (thoughts).

Homosexuality always turns into a religious debate. Everyone opposed to homosexual marriage is not religious.
