China Thread

Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, and I am sure a few others have already defaulted.

What makes the chinese so bad is they dont have to deliver on their side of it to collect. Nicaragua being a key example. They were supposed to get a canal, solar to run the country, and new infrastructure. They got like 10 miles of canal, 1 solar farm that the Chinese own and operate, and like 100 miles of road and internet along it.

Ecuador has a Chinese dam built below an active volcano. It is a hazard and doesn't produce electricity. Ecuador can't pay for the faulty and unsafe work, so China now owns them. The chances are there are some very wealthy Ecuadorian politicians, though.

You don't find it at all odd that a country halfway around the globe controls one of the most strategic points in this hemisphere? Of course, you probably see China as a friend rather than an enemy.

I don't see it as either. I see it as part trade partner, part adversary.

Are you concerned that it would hinder Panama traffic (assuming it does control the canal)? That seems farfetched to me.

I certainly don't see them as the enemy. They are like a huge sheepdog that just came out of the water. Everyone around him is going to get wet, but he means none of them ill will. They are working in the best interest of their country, trying to look like they are working for the people while filling their pockets with cash, same as our politicians here. The Chinese people love America and want to emulate it in every way. Be like Mike kinda thing. China needs a lot of raw materials to support their production, they are trying to guarantee the flow, same as the US has done with oil production. I don't see them as the enemy just a large, getting larger, competitor in the word market.

For several years I viewed China as non-interventionalist/inward looking. But with the Belt & Road and how it's now exporting tools to help authoritarian governments control their people, it's getting more difficult to view China as a benign actor on the international stage.

That's pretty much the way China has worked for centuries. Slippery as an eel. They will smile and say one thing while doing another. You can't judge China on by what you immediately see or what the Chinese tell you. You have to study history. China is like the leopard; it can't change its spots

I saw Earth Wind and Fire a couple of weeks ago. Lots of new members but core is there. They play. Hit after hit.
If ELO was still a band that toured that's probably the one concert I would try to attend.

They are far from a benign actor but not dissimilar to the actions of the USA, Great Britain and their influence is to control raw materials they see as necessary for their survival and continued growth. Future wars will be over base raw materials and food. Every one of the major powers is positioning itself in preparation. Hard to single them out.

There's an interesting phenomenon in that war usually corresponds when one world power gets passed by another country. I don't know that it has to do with resources, though.

Literally every domination has been about resources, England dominating India, Africa, China and America. Spain dominating South America. USA dominating the middle east. Russia is coveting the polar cap as it melts, meddling in Venezuela, China is going after Africa, South America and small adjoining islands. Its always been, and still is, about natural resources. Eventually there will be war.

Not all of these conflicts have been driven by the need for resources.

Why would they want land....land=resources?

Yeah, that chart is pretty amazing ... some pretty distorted definitions or justifications. In leading up to WW2 Japan and Germany could be accused of wanting power, influence, and land; but what both really wanted was resources ... oil, for one, and material for manufacturing. Not much different from what the British wanted in India, the Spanish in S America, or the French, Dutch, and British in SE Asia. Both Japan and Germany were big on cornering some oil and rubber; except for religious squabbles and domination of one crown over another in the old days, wars always, as you said come back to resources ... and strategic access to those resources.

Don't worry the Democrats are sending the Chinese tapes of Obamas apology tour. That should give them hope.

The press is so far off on the Chinese military. There was an article yesterday about how China is poised to take over as the greatest military power. This is the country that does not have a soldier, pilot, any officer including the top brass with any combat experience. Poised, funny!
