Let me preface this by saying that my wife is a nurse, but please don’t take that as me saying that she knows more than these medical experts or others analyzing the situation, but just as an example of how this is not necessarily xenophobic, but more of how things like the flu get their genesis. When I got my flu shot this season around late October I remember asking her what the expectations were around the hospital for the flu season. And I’m paraphrasing “we really don’t know yet, we basically just look at China and see what comes out of there each year to use it as a barometer for our flu season.” I asked why and she basic reasoning was because of exactly what we are seeing as the cause of this right now. Their dietary habits, sewage system, etc.
I don’t think identifying the source of the virus is racist or xenophobic. To me and I’m guessing many others, this is just another example of identity politics being used for political gain and to paint one side as bigoted. If the damn thing originated in Toronto I doubt anybody would actually care that it was called the “Toronto Virus” or “Canadian Virus”. People would be making jokes left and right.
